DrummerDom -> BDSM EMT kit? (4/20/2008 9:53:12 AM)

I sat that Steel mentioned having a BDSM safety/emt kit and it got me thinking (mostly along the lines of, "hey, that's a good idea!")

1) Does anyone else do something like this?  I have a regular emergency kit but not one devoted to bdsm.

2) What items should be added to the standard fare (gauze, bandages, disinfectent, etc...) to upgrade a normal medkit to a "BDSM" medkit?

angelikaJ -> RE: BDSM EMT kit? (4/20/2008 10:24:48 AM)

EMT scissors

DreamyLadySnow -> RE: BDSM EMT kit? (4/20/2008 10:31:15 AM)

Drummer,
that depends entirely on what sort of play you do.
Look at your activitie and think about what COULD go wrong. If you know what could happen, you think about what you would need to handle the situation and keep that handy when you play.
Everyone's kit will differ (although EMT scissors, bandages, rubber gloves and disinfectant are pretty much mandatory) depending on their play.
Also handy is a charged phone and the address printed near the phone. In an emergency people can panic and forget their own address. Strange but true.

like angelika3 said, emt scissors. Also burn/abrasion creme , antibiotic ointment, rubber or nitrile gloves, the other safety kit usuals : antiseptic ( I like hydrogen peroxide) bandaids gauze, medical tape. Also some preventive stuff: condoms , dental dams disinfectant wipes for toys and furniture. There are more but that is a good overview.

Yup like mentioned before..the standard kit. Plus trauma shears (referred to as emt scissors but we dont call them that!), bottled water, glucose tablets if playing with diabetic partner (also sometimes people not diabetic can have blood sugar drops following intense play sessions., hard container for sharps (razors, needles), anything pourable to clean wounds <alcohol, iodine, H2O2>, latex free gloves. helpful to have your medical hx and list of meds on a card too, and for the partner. very nice to just hand to the medics if needed. as mentioned before...address and phone number of place you are at by the phone too. thats a good idea for all times, as people do panic. having a red biohazard bag is good too depending on type of play. those bags are for bloody material. say if you do needle play...

I would also considure having benedryl on hand. Sometimes there are allergic reactions to rubber, latex, metals used and such. I keep the quick melt strips on hand, since they dont need to be swallowed - just absorbed on the tounge.

angelikaJ -> RE: BDSM EMT kit? (4/20/2008 10:47:53 AM)

as important as the kit ...the knowledge to go with it...a basic first aid course and a CPR certification are necessary... (and keep up with those certifications...they have been changing many things esp in regards to CPR)

edit spelling

OldBastardly1 -> RE: BDSM EMT kit? (4/20/2008 10:57:31 AM)

I have the usual stuff, trauma pads/ab pads, emt scissors, eye wash, sterile eye-pads, penlight ( useful for checking pupils...learn what to look for ),bandages, bandaids , gauze sponges, burn treatment,  instant-cool pouchs, med tape, antibiotic ointment, prep wipes ( alcohol, betadine, etc ), tongue depressors, ace bandage, splint ( about 8" ),  topical anti-histamine, oral anti-histamine, tweezers, hand sanitizer, emergency hypothermic blanket ( they are quite small ), rubber tourniquet material ( use ONLY as a last resort ), mouth shield for CPR use, rubber gloves, a few maxi-pads ( great for a large, bleeding wound. I am sure that I have missed something. This should be enough to keep you busy till the EMT's get there, lol.
Most importantly, take a CPR class and a first-aid class, at least.

EMT scissors

Yup,they have a blunted tip that can get behind a binding or rope.

I have a pair of the "Lister" type, which are drop forged(instead of the stamped w/ plastic handles)I also have a bunch of the cheap-o ones.

I keep a large pair of bolt-cutters handy, as I'm very much into bondage and don't want to take the time to unhook someone if it becomes necessary.  I also place a cordless phone within reach of my sub's hands if he's tied up, so that if something happens to me, he can at least dial emergency services.

Never leave home without it! hahaha

But seriously, I have a freaking enourmous bag of medical stuff that I lug around to sessions. Gauze, A packet of QuikClot, tape, shears, IV's that usually end up as a hangover remedy, some antihistamine stuff, because I am allergic to latex... not bad allergic, just to where it burns my throat and bothers my skin.

O, and gloves... I'm sure there's more in there, but I never have had to use it, so it's all good.

I'm thinking of getting a pair of bolt cutters. There's been two times now where some ah... genius has lost the keys to something, and I'm only saved either after a half hour of searching, or forcing my hands out of the cuffs.

Personally, I wouldn't advise anyone to put something in the bag that you don't know how to use.

I have two well stocked first aid kits in My home, one imdustrial size that we keep up to date since we live in a Hurricane/Tornado area and one that is travel size for "trips"--I also recert My CPR every year--

If there is a diabetic or hypoglycemic present, juice and crackers for early signs of a possible or probable low blood sugar reaction (if they haven't lost consciousness yet).  Or a tube of the glucose (I forget the trade name) that they squeeze between the cheek and gums or under the tongue if they have lost consciousness.

(I just scanned the whole thread, if someone already mentioned this, I apologize, I missed it.)

SteelofUtah -> RE: BDSM EMT kit? (4/20/2008 3:02:26 PM)

Being a Type Two Diabetic myself I can say that having those might not always help. I have had Drops and Raises that felt like the other so I have a HIGH count that felt like a Low Glucose Tabs could have put me in a Sugar Coma.

If you are playing with a Diabetic Check Blood Sugar BEFORE you start and then again if they start looking GONE. If the BGL has risen or dropped any more than 15 points..... Give them water then take another reading in 15 mins.

IF you are with someone who HAS these Drops and Rises, They will know what is best for them after the second test. For me it is Orange Juice for others it is Crackers, Know the person you play with.

And one more thing. When it comes to a Diabetic no one should force them to take ANYTHING, Glucose substitute or not. Why? Because ONLY a Diabetic knows what is best for them, the only other person they should listen to is thier doctor.

Because of issues with Bruising My Doc knows about my Kinky lifestyle so that you know Dr. Patient Priveledge protects you that doesn't stop the nurses from reading your file the girl who now takes my Blood Pressure refuses to look me in the Eye. I am Still glad the Doc knows because he has helped me to understand giving people a Glucose Tab can be a Bad Idea if for some reason you are on a HIGH and they don't know that it could make it worse.

Like I keep saying KNOW you partner and make sure your partner knows themselves.

You're absolutely right, and if I gave any impression that anyone should shove a glucose tab into someone's mouth without knowing their condition, that was very much not my intent.

I posted with the mindset that this type of information had already been discussed.  In the same vein, for example, if someone has a severe allergy to, say, bees, and you're playing outdoors....that condition should have been discussed beforehand, and the epi pen should be handy.

I did not mean to imply that anyone should pre-stock pharmeceuticals or even over-the-counter medication and administer them at will :)

This what I keep in my dungeon and bring with me when I travel.  It's well worth the price.
