The UK government plans to crack down on personal SM profiles on the internet. They want to impose prison sentences of three years for British inhabitants who download SM images.  Ful article here:

Cool.

It looks pretty bad realy.  Midori closed her site in fear of prosecution.  Several other sites are "cleaning up" or closing because the Attorney General, Department of Justice and the FBI announced that US hosted webs with "bestiality, urination, defecation, as well as sadistic and masochistic behaviour" will be exposed to obscenity prosecutions.

The wording is kind of obscure.  It reads like this will only happen if the legislation passes.   I doubt something like that will ever come to pass.  A three-year prison term for downloading and/or possessing SM photos?   Seems more than a little outrageous, not to mention the overflow it would cause in the prisons. And I thought they were all laid back about this stuff in the UK.

Errrrrm just wanting to make a small note here, that story came out in 05, and as UnFettered website states

The Home Office's threat to BDSM images has had vigorous opposition from Backlash, the umbrella organisation representing BDSM, anti-censorship and libertarian groups to fight the proposal. It has encouraged groups and individuals to respond to the consultation document and to write to their MPs.
The deadline for responses has closed. The Home Office should publish a report on the consultation early in 2006.
________________________________________________http://www.unfettered.co.uk/bdsmrights/backlash There doesnt seem to be any update at their site, neither can they be found at NCSF or Free Speech Coalition, will have a look for Backlash, but last I heard they were offline , so Unfettered is my main source as they are UK based Midoris site closed over two years ago, This from the front page of the remaining site (http://www.beautybound.com)Unfortunately the current political climate with the Communication Decency Act and the increased demands of the recordkeeping requirements, it has become nearly impossible for many artists to publish beautiful erotic work. We've decided that it's time to close this site Many adult sites shut down because of the record keeping requirements to prove the age of the model in any photography, which included having to have the models real name and address in the records, which opened up a whole other can of wormsLucy

Thanks for update, they are changing the wording quite a bit aren't they?

April 2008 - "end the distribution of website images that would not be tolerated for a second in the print media or terrestrial television"

This falls right in with the post I created on the General section:
http://www.collarchat.com/m_1809350/tm.htm
It is about the Bill that went into effect in June of 2005 in the U.S. and what it means for the the adult photography/video industry.

Both of the old news articles I posted in this Alternative Lifestyles in the News section were because of conversations that arose from the paraphilia list* I posted.  The point is the conflict in moderen perspectives:

1994 "consensual sadomasochistic behavior" no longer a disorder in the DSM
1995 Denmark removes sadomasochism from its classification of diseases
2008 (april) The 1995 debate still rages on how to crack down and imprison British inhabitants who download SM images from the Internet.

The world is in conflict and we need to crack the whip on our local polical machinery.

Ok, out of date info getting re-posted as current I can forgive. But I just have to point out that an american based company/website is not going to care much at all about a law in the UK.

Midori has said that the closure was only part due to fear of government 'crackdown' and was partily due to the fact that she wanted to spend less time and effort working on a vanity site and dedicate more time to teaching and workshops.

It dosent matter anyway, cause the section of the CPOEA that delt with the isse was overtuned as unconstitutional back in october of 2007. Betcha all the websites that closed because they feared the disastar they all KNEW was comming were the same folks that were afraid of Y2K.

I doubt something like that will ever come to pass.

Since the vote in the Lords to remove that section of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill was lost, it will be law in some form by May 9th. As far as I'm aware, amendments are the only possibility now.

The UK legislators seem to be ruled by the editorials of The Sun and the News of the World, as the current administration seem hell bent on keeping the political spin going to keep the news media happy! We can now be prosecuted and probably found guilty of sex crimes on the strength of a statement with out any other evidence to back it up, the prosecution in such cases can no longer even have to prove guilt! All they need do now is just indicate that the defendant could be guilty. Now with plans to introduce legislation undr the Terrorism Act to allow the prosecution to introduce statements as evidence into trials which can not be challenged fairly by the defence as the witness and/or complainant will not have to attend court in person or by video link! How long is it before they start abusing that law as they have with other parts of the terrorism legislation, i.e. the removal of a 60 year old heckler from a Labour Party annual conference? I don't like being political, but the lunatics have really started taking over the asylum!

And we keep hearing from the British over there that they have much more rational laws than we do...

I think anyone who ever imagines a penis or vagina should be guillotined.

I hate to even mention the dreaded Margaret Thatcher, but sensible legislation vanished with her demise, since John Majors tenture politicians are more worried about grabbing the headlines. than what is best for the country as a whole. Thats why I love good old "Red" Ken Livingstone, despite the headlines and the noise from the ejits, London has improved under his tenure, especially traffic and public transport wise. Lots more needs to be done, but the alternative mayoral candidates are joke in comparison. Ken Livingstone sticks to his guins despite what the tabloids say. It's about time New Labour worried about the state of the country, not the editorial in tomorrows Sun newspaper!
