Would a fetish fall into its own sexual classification?

If that fetish became a sexual preference, would it become a sexual orientation?

Define "fetish" as how you see the word.  A "fetish" is something (usually but not always, an object unrelated to traditional sex), that must be present for sexual arousal to take place.

Since by definition, a fetish is a requirement, it is not a preference.

Perhaps you could tell us of a specific kink or fetish you are referring to.

First you would have to define what you mean by orientation and what the fetish was.  It would only occur within specific areas IMO - so it's not impossible - but the questions to narrow to answer correctly.

I'll use masochism as an example.

If I can no longer "get off" without pain, what would that be?

When you speak of fetishes and their classifications, are you referring to the medical community or the BDSM community?  Fetishes are paraphillias and there are 106 that I know of.  However, only 8 are clinically recognized paraphillias by the DSM.

Forgive the following cut & paste from my personal web site
----------------------------------------------------
8 Clinical Paraphilias
In my research I have noticed that there are only 8 officially recognized clinical paraphilias.

1. Exhibitionism: the recurrent urge or behavior to expose one's genitals to an unsuspecting person.
2. Fetishism: the use of non-sexual or nonliving objects or part of a person's body to gain sexual excitement. Partialism refers to fetishes specifically involving nonsexual parts of the body.
3. Frotteurism: the recurrent urges or behavior of touching or rubbing against a nonconsenting person.
4. Pedophilia: the sexual attraction to prepubescent or peripubescent children.
5. Sexual Masochism: the recurrent urge or behavior of wanting to be humiliated, beaten, bound, or otherwise made to suffer.
6. Sexual Sadism: the recurrent urge or behavior involving acts in which the pain or humiliation of the victim is sexually exciting.
7. Transvestic fetishism: a sexual attraction towards the clothing of the opposite gender.
8. Voyeurism: the recurrent urge or behavior to observe an unsuspecting person who is naked, disrobing or engaging in sexual activities, or may not be sexual in nature at all.
----------------------------------------------------
106 Paraphilias

    Paraphilia List Declining
    Perverts will become endangered species
There were previously more than 8 paraphilias because homosexuality was listed as a paraphilia in the old DSM-I and DSM-II (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual).  We are currently on text revision DSM-!V-TR.  Now the modern medical community is moving to completely abolish sadism and masochism as disease categories in the future of DSM-V-TR.  Arguments are that the truly pathological forms of sadism and masochism are adequately covered by other diagnoses.

The definition of various sexual practices as paraphilias has been met with opposition and the medical community is getting political pressure to remove sadism and masochism as paraphilias from the upcoming DSM-V-TR.  Efforts by the BDSM lifestyle communities, the ReviseF65 project and the many coalitions for sexual freedom, claim discrimination against sadomasochism referring to the precedent of removing of homosexuality from the list of mental disorders in the current DSM.
If they abolish sadism and masochism as paraphilias, that will bring the list of clinically recognized paraphilias down from 8 to 6 and set masochists and sadists apart from being official recognized as perverts.  That's OK with me, I didn't want my sadism to be officially recognized, covered by medical insurance or cured.

If you enjoy recieving pain, that would make you a masochist.  Giving makes you sadist.  Both can be a fetish and orientations - just not a sexual one(for clarification).

Sexual orientation has more to do w th whom your chose as partners, not what you do as actions.
Your orientation is Gay, straight, bisexual, polysexual, so on so forth.
If you are a masochist who cannot get off without pain, that is a need , but not an orientation. If you are a straight masochist, you will not get off if someone of the same gender is beating you. If you are a gay masochist, you wont get off if someone of the opposite gender is the giver of pain.

    My view, at least.

    Yeah, I'm a little dizzy!

    I think that
ALGOLAGNIA is slightly different than Masochism because I don't think that masochist 'enjoy' the pain .

If they did  then it wouldn't be painful... but if it isn't painful then what is it?

Does anyone know what I mean?!

Masochists dont necessarily enjoy the pain, they enjoy the sensations. Fox enjoys hurting for me, bcasue of the context it is in. He doesnt enjoy PAIN in general, he enjoys pain as part of everything else we do together, and of course there are al the chemicals that your body releases in repsonse to that pain which most masochists truly enjoy. You dont have to like the pain to be masochistic, you have to want the pain. Some want that pain for the aftereffects, but they stil want the pain, so they are still masochists.

The need, then, would be the extra stimulation. Some people cannot get off without more stimulation that stright sexual activity gives them. Some need lots of foreplay to get there, others need to be hurt, some need to be blindfolded. Its al a matter of stimulation and how your body registers and reacts to it.

I'm aware that masochism is the want for pain, and that algonia is the arousal from pain.

What would be the need of it though?

What would be the need of it though?

pain makes you feel alive.  if you have ever had hot wax poured on you..that is an example of pain making you feel that you are alive.  i have had sessions longer than a couple hours of wax poured.  flogging is also another form that makes you feel alive especially after it is over.
