Emulate is the key word. There is a difference between fantasy and reality and decent, mentally healthy, people know where the lines are. I don’t care how deeply anyone is into "the lifestyle" – if it is not consensual, then it is criminal. If you’re saying we shouldn’t be surprised that these things happen – well, considering the history of the human race I certainly will not disagree. But that is no excuse not to get pissed off about these things.

I do appreciate that sentiment. Women can certainly be just as twisted and perverted as men (I would bother with Collarme if they weren’t

). But this man (totally not giving him the benefit of the doubt and presuming him guilty) is definitely bad.

There may be hope for the five year old but as to the two older ones, how could they ever be socialized to the larger society around them? What do they even know of it? Yes when its not consensual and forced upon a person it is a crime. Yes they should be shot, or even better burned alive in the public square. As far as women being the good gender, well, women are less likely to do this sort of thing. Although you have to admit most women don't need to keep a "sex slave" locked in the basement.

I don't believe for a second his wife didn't have some idea it was going on. The article stated he was a dominating and controlling man, she was probably scared of him and went along with it.

This is a very sad and tragic thing to happen, this womans life is ruined and I can only imagine what mental state the children will be in.

YOU might crave and emulate it. I certainly don't.

As for the "good/bad gender" comment, how ridiculous. Individuals do bad shit, not an entire gender.

Let's hope that the woman and the kids can someday live a normal life, or as close to normal as it can get.

I do agree, that the wife should have suspected SOMETHING was going on, and how could she
not ever see him entering or leaving that dungeon?
She never saw him taking food or supplies down there?
It is very hard to believe she suspected or saw nothing in 24 years!

We probably won't ever get all the facts... it's a horrible story. It's terrifying that the mother of this young woman supposedly 'never suspected' anything: how can this possibly be? I also wonder where the authorities were and why there wasn't an inquest into the 'disappearance' of the daughter.

What can possibly be going on in the mind of a man who does something like this? How mentally ill did he have to be to carry on all these years? And how does such a person envisage life in general? The motivator seems to be a pulsion of death. It's all in the hands of the psychiatrists now... but something went wrong in his head. Will his victims ever recover a modicum of a life?

Yes, of course I see the difference between what he did and the stuff I'm into. I was just drawing attention to some of the surface similarities.

I do think it was a horrible crime and I'm glad he's going to pay for it.

On the bbc news this morning, they mentioned the little boy of 5 and that he had said how fun it was to travel in a 'real car' - so there must have been an understanding of life outside the rooms for the children (maybe via their mother) and that they had postive belief he would be easily integrated into society. The others they had a less than positive belief of.

...reports in Canada have pointed out they had access to a small television. It was how the imprisoned mother knew the hospital had picked up her oldest sick kid.

Nope. I do not buy it for a heartbeat. Good old mom HAD to know what was going on and, if so, is as guilty as the father.

She was 18 when she went missing, 11 when the abuse started. Dissapearing at 18 means legal adult means sadly no-one is able to do much legally... and if a fake letter was sent the mother may have believed Elisabeth could have run away.

Its definatly the older children I feel for- how oh how do you get over this? Do you? Its so hard to imagine never going outside for 19 years- and the last baby? The one that died? Obviously the older kids knew Mum was pregnant- they must have seen and heard each birth. I just cant imagine what they went through, after the Gran/dad took the other siblings away to be raised in a 'normal' setting (I'm using the term very losely)

Can you imagine how those kids feel? Three were "good" enough to be raised out in the world while the other 3 were condemned to the same fate as their mother. I'm guessing hate is too mild a word for how those kids likely feel for this man and their siblings who he raised.

BTW was which children got raised where determined by gender? I know that reports are that the eldest was an 18 or 19 year old girl. But was he keeping the femalse in the cellar to abuse and raising the boys himself or what?
