So for the first time in our history it is going to be a black democrat versus a white republican. The civil rights movement have won the struggle and now any rich guy of any color can be successful as a party presidential candidate for the white house prize.

Don't forget all the rules.  He or she has to be over 35, and have been born in the USA.   Great country America, isn't it?

It absolutely is a great country.  Do you want somone that is 22 years old running the country?  The founders had good reasons for setting that age requirment.  As for being born in the U.S., there were very good reasons for it when it was written into the Constitution.  Just to the south of us in Mexico, they had a little problem with an Austrian citizen proclaiming himself Emperor of Mexico less than a hundred years after the Constitution was written.  Now it's debatable whether that old rule should not be done away with.  But frankly, I don't want some guy just off the boat from (pick a place) running for President.

ehem, actually the French King who sat Maximilian on the thrown with help from a segment of the Mexican population who didn't want democratic rule.  From what I've read about Maximilian, he would have been just as happy not becoming Emporer.

Ahem, I am well aware of the Europeans behind the scene in regards to Maximillian.  Maximillian was sort of the cousin no one knew what to do with.  They wanted to control Mexico, so they put him in power.  But he could have left before he was taken prisoner and executed.  He stubbornly tried to hold on to power.

The founders specifically didn't want Europeans meddling in American affairs.  The native birth requirement was put into place to deter exactly that.

or the supreme court, or the military, or the cabinet, or congress, or private industry.  What mark do you want to hit?  What is it gonna take to "win".  If i gave any sembleance of snarkiness before, let me set it straight...America is a great country.

Gee, maybe when shit like this doesn't happen anymore:

or maybe when credit scores aren't used anymore to discriminate with.

Irishknight -> RE: ITS ALL BLACK AND WHITE TO ME (6/4/2008 9:29:13 AM)

Interesting article Hippie.  My question about it is "What are they considering black sounding names?
There are some names that I have to agree will get a quick turn away from bosses.  The list is not limited just to black names.  My wife's name is an old Irish name but many can't seem to pronounce it when we tell them much less when they read it on a resume.  So, not being able to say it, they trash the resume.  Her solution was to go by her middle name.

Key word in that article there friend... suggest. And unfortunately there are too many unnamed variables in that "experiment" for me to feel entirely comfortable taking it with anything less that a spoonful of salt. Im not saying discrimination doesnt exist, neither of us can say one way or the other, (being caucasion males, at least in apperance) but I cant tell you the number of jobs I applied at where I was qualified and didnt get an interview, was it discrimination? No, it was the way the job market works

also, as someone with horrible credit... I understand why they do it. While in most cases it isnt discriminatory, I will agree that on some things (i.e. job apps) your credit score shouldnt be an issue, but who would loan money to someoe who has shown time and time again that they are unable/unwilling to pay it back?

I am absolutely thrilled at the idea that we might have a black man as president. Hopefully this will serve as an example to others that they can accomplish thier dreams

A black democrat?"
Isn't he only "half" black?

pinksugarsub -> RE: ITS ALL BLACK AND WHITE TO ME (6/4/2008 9:37:02 AM)

For me the only saving grace of this election cycle is that voters will be limited to (atm) choosing amoung a white woman, an old white man -- and i do mean old -- and an African-American man in his middle age.

And yes, despite all its many faults, this is still a great country; i'm somewhat patriotic.  Doesn't blind me to our faults or to the misbehavior of our government, but yes, i love my country.

Maybe we can finally get rid of the hyphenated American practice now? And all just be American?

Irishknight -> RE: ITS ALL BLACK AND WHITE TO ME (6/4/2008 10:17:10 AM)

I missed the page with the names the first time.  My bad.  I still don't see some of those as black sounding names.  Some of them definately are.  Interesting study but I think they need a bit more research to prove anything.  It looks like a good start though.

there is a good (imnsho) way to do this

fuck everybody... when there is no race, there is no racism
For the record, I am being completely serious... cause I see no other option, as long as people can point and say "they look different" there will be racism, unfortunately thats the way the world is.

atursvcMaam -> RE: ITS ALL BLACK AND WHITE TO ME (6/4/2008 10:22:26 AM)

So your simple answer HK is "never".  Look though, i have a friend who is looking to find funds to research whether bald men really have less hair than hirsute men.  And another that is collecting to find the widow of the unknown soldier.
My questions on this study is:
        What names were used?
Why not identical resumes and cover letters?  Yes, if it got spotted both would be tossed.
What was the content of the dissimilar cover letters, envelopes etc.  Who actually got the jobs applied for?  How much of it had to do with timing?
And, if credit scores should be unimportant, do you want to loan me a couple of thou?
