I'm sure there's some of that blatant xenophobic paranoia to blame, but I'm also convinced political parties and other organisations use such questions as gay marriage, abortion and other social issues as means to rally public support in their favour. It's utterly cynical, and calculated.

( said by a co-workers of mine recently who was norn and raised in Lousianna ) just as in the 60's and 70's they used allowing blacks thier rights to be a gateway for all sorts of bad things.. they will turn allowing gays rights into being the gate way for all sorts of bad things now too. at least they are predictable. Gay marriage causes pollution and is raising oil prices, you know. Ahem. I don't see a good reason to ban gay marriage on a purely objective equal-rights basis. Either you have to give equal rights to everyone, or you're not doing it; if you create exclusionary social apparati, that doesn't work. Not allowing gay marriage but allowing civil unions will fare about as well as the separate but equal doctrine. Not allowing gay marriage at all will eventually fare about as well as slavery (the institutionalized racist kind, before I get anyone excited!). However, the comments about people using it as political mobilization tool are dead on. That's why the judiciary's highest branches are not elected in this country.
