I don't see this as a gun issue nor does anyone that I've talked to about it today while running errands.

I see it as an economic issue, a rage issue, a homicidal asshole trying to suicide by cop because he is a f-ing coward issue.

Yes I can easily see him striding into that church with a knife if he hadn't had a gun.

Oops I forgot to add that I see is as a social issue as well!

Sorry Archer to me this is the same argument Thadius made,to wit : there are other method's so lets leave this one be....tell you what lets address this method and see if we can't cut down on this one method...and than we will address all those instances of alternative mayhem that some beleive will ensue

I will ask you the same question that I asked kittin,  If all legally owned guns were suddenly removed from the world, with no more being made ever, would gun violence end?

After guns, do we go after cutlery, and then baseball bats, and the rocks, oh and lets not forget about all of the things that can be used to make explosives (including shrapnel)?  Prohibition on anything, only makes a monopoly on what is being banned more likely for criminals, look at how well outright bans on alcohol and drugs have worked.

I am in complete agreement with Archer on this, the laws on the books need to be enforced.  Hell, I am even in favor of adding more severe penalties for crimes commited with a firearm, manditory minimums of say 10 or 20 years + the time for whatever the crime was.

I am not informed enough to make any comments on how to deal with the mental issues of people that perform acts like this, so I will leave that to those that are.
And Thadius I will answer that argument the same way I previously have...it's called attrition....the bad guys keep getting arrested ,the weapons confiscated and destroyed...available weapons see a increase in value(supply and demand)eventually two-bit gangster wannabes simple can't afford the fucking things...as far as cutlery and baseball bats, the next time someone goes into his former worksite and kills half a dozen people with a steak knife ...come back to me and we will figure that one out

Sounds kinda like the "War on Drugs" plan.

How'd that work out?

This kind of shit seems to occur every couple of months or so. It sucks, but it's an obvious consequence of a liberal gun policy. *Shrug*. I'm getting jaded, not out of being cruel, but out of the lack of action over what, to me, would be an obvious start to a solution to this problem: at least, regulate and monitor gun ownership a little bit more.

Yep, lets take away the guns from Jews, then Communists then Gays...

Yes, next time I attend synagogue, I'll make sure I carry a bouquet of shotguns, just to be on the safe side  .

...forget the debate around gun control The above quoted line is the important issue. There's been talk on these boards from some ( a vocal minority) that this sort of extremism is only a product of Islamic thought. The lesson to take away here is that extremism in all religions is the problem, not just one religion.

"All those innocent civilians, who would never impose their ideas on anyone" -who, by the way, voted and continue to support Cheney and Rumsfeld.  What about Pat Robertson's call to "assassinate Hugo Chavez" the elected leader of Venezuela; would that constitute "imposing their ideas on anyone"?  What about the Iraqi civilians who were at any of those weddings that got shot up, were they trying to "impose their ideas on anyone"?  Please respond.

I'm not sure what your question was, sorry - perhaps you weren't addressing it to me, however, in which case I apologise for not understanding something that didn't concern me anyway.

Why talk only about guns then?
I see it as a much larger issue.

........i get uncomfortable with this sort of logic. It's more or less the same as that bunch of idiots who go to soldiers funerals and shout that 'God is happy' and all that rot. If someone has done something wrong then hold them to that specific crime. Don't glory in what you see as karmic retribution.

Because we keep burying victims of fatal gun shot wounds..we can worry about the bigger issues once we stop going to these particular funereals

If this guy had used a can of gasoline and a box of matches would you be calling for a national dialogue on combustible fuels and incendiary devices?  Do you want us to keep track of items like that?  My question is not without merit; some of the largest mass murders in history have been caused by arsonists.

i'll be happy to pass out rolling pins to all those legal gun owners out there if guns are ever banned...they're not much help against the criminals with guns, but they might help in a utensil altercation.

I'm not "happy" about any of this.  I'm just pointing out that this story is getting more airtime than any of the weddings in Iraq that got shot up by jets, helicopters and Blackwater.  The Pat Robertson story got some airtime, but he's not been rejected by the pulpit as a politically-agenda'd mouthpiece.  I'm merely playing advocate here.  I'm not trying to offend anyone, but to remind everyone that we all ought to be equally offended by all the things going on around us.

......how do you know we're not? Just because i post about being offended by one thing doesn't mean i'm not offended by something else. Your assumption regarding my (or anyone elses) views is unwarranted. A shooting in a church is not necessarily linked to Hugo Chavez, Pat Robertson, or anything else. It is what it is.

Do you, when asked about the weather, say "it's fine but i've not been able to enjoy sunshine since Pat Robertson said assasinate Hugo Chavez.....in fact i've made a vow not to crack a smile until he goes to trial for it......oh, it's still sunnyish......"?

This should be some interesting reading for you then...  http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=372361

quote:

Analyzing county level data for the entire United States from 1977 to 2000, we find annual reductions in murder rates between 1.5 and 2.3 percent for each additional year that a right-to-carry law is in effect. For the first five years that such a law is in effect, the total benefit from reduced crimes usually ranges between about $2 billion and $3 billion per year

Or look for his work More guns, less crime.

So no one else seems to think that the sensationalism of these crimes and adnausium reporting is not at least contributing to and perpetuating these crimes? Almost all of these people are seeking attention beyond the act...and they are getting it.

You are probably on to something with this point.  At least as a partial motivation.  With the 24/7 news networks, and the internet, there is definitely more exposure than these incidents would have gottent say 20-30 years ago.  Hmmm, something else to weigh in the discussion.
