While the body can function normally without a gallbladder, this accessory organ of digestion is important to the proper digestion of fats. The function of the gall bladder is to concentrate and storing bile . Bile is needed to digest foods. The cystic duct drains the gallbladder , and the common bile duct is the main duct draining into the duodenum. Together, these ducts form part of the biliary system . The biliary system creates, transports, stores, and releases bile into the duodenum to help in digestion . The biliary system includes the gallbladder, bile ducts inside the liver , and bile ducts outside the liver. So in other words, you need a gallbladder to have food digested properly, but its not necessary. What the liver cannot help with in the absence of a gallbladder, is left to the duodenum, small and large intestine to absorb before it exists the body. Too much of a good or bad thing is just that. My advice would be to see a nutritionist who can help with extra needed enzymes (taken orally) to properly digest food. Continuing to take immodium and pepto and other such stuff is just a big band-aid. (It would be quite like taking exlax your entire life to have a movement and never allowing your body to do its own thing.) The described symptoms can be a side effect and others are quite right, it is not always discussed between primary care physician and patient. It seems the better alternative of gall stones and continued severe abdominal pain related to digestion of spicy or fatty foods is removing the gall bladder by which ever route is used.
