Ma'am shows respect and I like it. Also like Miss, Mistress, and Madam. Throw a "yes" in front of any of those and I am happy:)

I've always been a Ma'am, and I accept all similar courtesies. I know that some younger women seem to think that only old grannies are Ma'am material, not sure why.

In Texas when i was by myself i was Ma'am. When i was with another female we were Y'all...

In Bristol, UK, very old people will call anyone younger, of either sex, "my loverl" [Sic. They put an L on the ends of words with vowel sounds. That's why it's called Bristol and not Bristow, as it was originally] Now beat that as a form of address that's difficult to get used to.

Ma'am never bothered me, but then I've grown up in the South. Honestly, Ma'am strikes me as the graduated version of Miss. I was refered to as miss by adults when I was younger, so it rings submissive to me. But I was taught by my aunt that the only phrases a young lady needs are " Yes, Ma'am; No, Ma'am; Thank you, Ma'am; and Pleeeeeaaaaasssse." So I suppose Ma'am is associated with granting/denying requests and friendly authority in my mind.

I usually see what others wish to call me before allowing it or putting a stop to it. The title someone thinks of to suit you is sometimes an important indicator of their attitude and their view of you.

I prefer it pronounced "mum." Just exactly as if you were addressing the queen.

Probably the clearest case yet of the point in my original post, Venatrix. In the UK, "Mum" is only used for the Queen and one's mother. Any British sub would struggle mightily with calling you "mum", and a British Domme would splatter the nose of a sub who used it, too.

It was a joke. You know, "You should always think of me as the equivalent of the queen." I would have thought a Brit, of all people, would have got it. Oddly enough, I prefer that people call me by my first name. I'm not big on protocol, because I think that's for people who need a lot of frou-frou in order to prove how dominant they are. The guys seem to like an honorific, so I usually just have them attach "miss" in front of my name. One of the men I'm currently in contact with calls me "goddess," which causes me to smirk a bit, but that's his preference, and I really don't care. If I insisted that someone call me that, I could never look myself in the mirror again. I'd probably wet myself laughing.

For me, "mistress" is kind of neutral. I know some Dommes love it, so I'll do it for their sake. Actually, truth be told, "Ma'am", or "Ms plus surname" does it most of all for me. But it doesn't really matter. I'll keep on saying, what makes her feel right is what I'll do, and that's that.

"Goddess" though - well, I'll always keep that as a kind of treasured word, to be spoken quietly and intensely, just at the right time, and almost certainly preceded by "Oh . . ."

honestly i don't like my pet calling me Ma'am - it makes me feel older than i really am. he does call me Mistress or m'lady but i like it better when he says "my dear". it's more personal and romantic.

You raise a great question, but I think it's impossible to ascertain what one word (or words) will work for the majority of FemmeDommes. We're all much too unique with our own tastes and quirks for one thing to always be a slam dunk with any/every Domme.

I'm not personally offended OR thrilled by "Ma'am", "Madam", "MyLady", etc. These are fairly neutral titles as far as I am concerned, and"Ma'am" is fine with me for just about any situation, vanilla or kink. Calling me simply "LadyDi", my own chosen name, is generally the best way to go, as it implies neither ownership nor a familiarity that may not be present. The only honorific that I absolutely disallow is "Goddess", which was the chosen term of endearment from my former boy. This was something I allowed him to call no other woman during our tenure together, and no other sub since has been allowed to refer to me in such a manner. For me, that term is evocative of a particular relationship I had and which ended much too soon for my liking. It's still very emotionally charged with me and until I can stop hearing his voice and only his voice in my head when I hear that word in a D/s context, no one else will call me that, either. I offer a simple correction if a submissive oversteps his/her bounds in using a title with me, unless I've previously corrected them and my warnings have gone unheeded.

Being a northern transplant to the south - I find Ma'am to be gracious , without being over the top . Ma'am , Miss , M'Lady - all work fine by me !

However Goddess is not something I can live with - feel like I need to have my pedestal handy at all times then ...
