Should everyone be willing to switch at least a little? Would experience on the receiving end make for better performance on the giving side of things? Does the bottom need to experience Topping to be best fill their role? Does one role require more experience with the inverse than the other role? Does this vary with play style and elements of play?

I don't think experiencing something you wouldn't enjoy would make you better at doing it, and many people wouldn't enjoy being on the submissive end of things so no. I don't believe that experiencing it first hand before you do it makes you a better teacher.

I don't think a sub or dom should be required to experience life from the other side but if one is so inclined I think it assists them in gaining a better perspective, mentally and physically, of the role they are assuming when they switch. For example a Master or Mistress who has been on the receiving end of a cane, might be a little more empathetic toward their sub and less enthusiastic when wielding this fierce implement.

Anything new you experience in life is just one more thing with which you have gained intimate knowledge. That knowledge and experience may in turn be somehow useful later on down the road... So, I'd say there are some specific advantages to sampling the other side, yes. Do you have to in order to be a better whichever-you-are?... I'd say no. Be who you are, but if you decide you might like to sample the other side, what's the harm? The only obstacles to get in your way would be opportunity and/or ego...

i can't imagine spending my life without any variety. it would be so boring! but some people like the same old, same old. sucks for them. but it's their choice.

i don't think it's a necessity to try the other side, but i think there are definitely advantages to it. it can't hurt and can only help you gain a better understanding of your own role. being open to learning something new is always a good thing.

another perspective comes from my martial arts training. it has shown me that it is absolutely necessary to experience both sides. my master insists on it and it has made me an infinitely better fighter. his reasoning is that you can't really hit someone until you know what it is to be hit. police officers are trained in much the same way. part of taser licensing includes actually being tased yourself. you have to be able to take it to give it.

my own introduction to bdsm went much much faster than it could have since i was able to experience everything.

Well, you gave the answer yourself.
I believe that Dominants should switch, under more experienced Dominants', in order to learn, understand and appreciate each experience. I don't believe that subs should do that, honestly.

when you start using the word "should", it smacks with the stench of "one-way twuism". not everyone thinks like you do. not everyone is willing to bottom of they're a Top and vice versa.

i enjoy both ends of the BDSM spectrum - i'm submissive to my Daddy and also Owner of a pet.

I think that's a brilliant idea.

I'll mention it to my bank, perhaps being their CEO for a year or two will make me a better customer. Same too with the utility companies and all those I pay my bills to. I've often wondered what it's like to be in the boardroom.

In fact I think you're onto something.

Calling all Americans, please send me your dollars. I want to have a shot at being US President, I'm prepared ro ask Moderator11 to be my VP and if we get the nomination and if you all vote for us I'm sure we'll sort everything out.

Ever stop to consider it's the piss poor attitude you display a lot on here, and nothing to do with your bdsm orientation? Have a better tude, and you'll probably get better replies and reactions.

I was a bottom for several years before I ever topped someone. I don't think the experience had any effect on it.

that would depend on what your doing. For example....single tail play.....hopefully the top has experience, the bottom, not so much. They basically just have to stand there, but the top better have a clue.

Oh no, don't do that, let the single polarity types be, we sure do not want to cause any more confusion as there already is. Can you just picture it if all those people who were happy and secure in their chosen role tried switching and found they liked it, could you imagine the chaos that would be caused There would be people walking around aimlesly not knowing what they were anymore, can you just imagine it.

Let switches be switches, we know what we are and I think we are more or less comfortable in what we are, switchs will form and be switches, leave the others alone, be kind.
