As many of you may know, I do animal rescue.

About 2 weeks ago, I was headed to Kroger to get some gas for my car, when I spotted an orange tabby cat crossing a side road.  So, I turned around to see if I could help him.

I stopped my car a few yards ahead of where he was, careful not to spook him and make him head for the street in front of a car.  To my absolute surprise, he came right up to me, meowing as if to say, "What took you so long?" :)

I put him in my car and headed straight to the vet's office.  On my way there, the cat started making gagging noises, and I knew he was going to puke.  Ugh.  Luckily, I have leather seats and a had a towel underneath him.  Sure enough, he puked.  But the WORST part was that he puked up worms!!  If you've never seen it, it is one of the grossest things ever.  Apparently, he was so infested with roundworms that they had backed up from his intestines into his stomach.  Poor kitty.

I've had him for about 2 weeks now, named him Sunshine (or Sunny, for short) and he has recovered from the worm infestation, diarrhea, and he's almost over a severe upper respiratory infection.  And tonight, as I sit here typing, he is actually PLAYING for the first time.  He has found a little toy mouse and a ball, and he's batting them around the den in a frenzy!  I'm just laughing out loud!  It's so heartwarming to know that he finally feels well enough to PLAY.

Anyway, just thought I'd post this for you fellow animal lovers who were so kind to me when one of my other cats, Sebastian, passed away a few weeks ago.  I hope Sunny's story brought a smile to your face like it did mine.  [:)]

Awwww so nice. I don't care if you killed fifty people yesterday, you are always welcome at Termy's Terminal. (warning it is a mess)

Have fun with your new friend as he trains you :-)

rexrgisformidoni -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 5:46:58 PM)

my kitteh is a rescue kitteh. she's asleep next to me right now, hogging the chair.

bamabbwsub -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 5:48:03 PM)

Thanks, Mistresse.  I also wish there were more people in the world who were willing to go out of their way to help animals (and people too, for that matter).  :)

bamabbwsub -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 5:49:34 PM)

Rex, of course she is!  She OWNS that chair and you should feel privileged that she's sharing it with you.  LOL

You... are an absolutely beautiful person. There is no higher commendation I could possibly think to give to you for what some would consider a small act of kindness and essence of what humanity should aspire to. It's beautiful.

TNstepsout -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 5:54:59 PM)

Awwww what a lucky kitty. I loved cats and Tabby's are my favorites.

rexrgisformidoni -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 5:57:33 PM)

hahaha
she is my alarm clock too. every morning at 5:30 she wakes me up to give her her morning soft food. damn her and her evil kitteh powers.

CarrieO -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 6:05:06 PM)

I was adopted by 3 abused rescue cats and these kind of stories warm my heart.

I have since become a very well-trained owner/human who works hard to keeps my girls in the manner to which they've become accustomed to! [;)]

The last stray I came across was a very small black kitty that had been hit by a car and was in the middle of the road...cars just racing past it totally unconcerned.  I stopped and grabbed a jacket I had, wrapped it up and drove off to my vet. The poor thing was pretty much beyond hope but there was no way I was going to just drive by. My vet put the little girl out of her misery and I went home and hugged my cats that night, thankful we found each other.
I'd rather be bleeding heart than without an ounce of pity.

I wish you the best with your new drop of "Sunshine"....here's to years of playing and smiles.

dcnovice -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 6:18:00 PM)

I have two orange tabbies, and they send their love to Sunny. They were so happy to hear that he's found such a good home.

Fwiw, I feed them in the evening, so they never wake me up.

Termyn8or -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 6:36:34 PM)

You got 49 of them training you ? Maybe YOU need a rescue :-)

T

bamabbwsub -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 6:37:46 PM)

LOL...No, no, Term...I "only" have 11 cats (and 3 dogs).

I meant, I had only killed 49 people.  Still love me?  LOL

Sanguinarian -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 6:47:59 PM)

Um... if you killed em... can I have em? : grins mischeviously. :

My dog Ellie was a rescue pooch. The person who had Ellie's parents didn't want the puppies, and so didn't take very good care of them at all, would leave them outside in winter, etc. So I would leave food out for them, got little hand warmers and wrapped them up in blankets for them. ( I was maybe 10 at the time ) until I kinda got caught, and they just handed me Ellie and left. My mother let me keep her, because I told her what was happening.

It never fails to amaze me ( as well as enrage me ) what people will do ( or neglect to do ) to animals.

Termyn8or -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 6:51:18 PM)

OK but two more and you get into a gray area. Kinda like being on moderation here. (c'mon 51 people is alot)

But only for ten minutes.

T

Wait a minute, you got eleven of them training you, hell you should be well educated by now :-)

DesertRat -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 6:52:21 PM)

You rock, bama! I share my home (and life) with six former strays. The four I snagged last year are a family...a mama and her three kittens. All of mine had various degrees of upper respiratory infections and the original, Otis, had a worm infestation that was about as bad as the one you described. Finding (or being found by) these little gangstas is the best thing that ever happened to me. So far.

bamabbwsub -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 7:13:22 PM)

Thanks for all of the kudos, everyone.  I didn't post Sunny's story for that reason, but it's always welcome.

It sounds like there are lots of animal lovers out there, and I don't think I did anything that the rest of you wouldn't have done as well.  That's nice to know.  [:)]

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 8:30:52 PM)

Ya know, as much as I generally detest humans, my kittehs are treated with the respect and deference that all of Bast's Chosen deserve.  Even the dog knows to show them respect.  (Although she has yet to learn that she's supposed to show it to ME as well... oh no, that big goofball defers to the 3 cats, ignores me as though she were one of them herself!)

I'm glad to hear your most recent addition is doing So much better!  Roundworm is a pain in the rump, and can be a killer if left completely untreated.  He's a lucky lil guy to have found you when he did, or he'd be dead now.

came4U -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 9:02:13 PM)

I can't turn away a cat.

My back door is always open (literally) to strays that come in from the cold to eat and hang out.  Screen door is open, inside door is open with a chain on it, they slip in when they feel like it.

The pregnant one who I thought would drop here obviously had somewhere else to have her kitlets because she is thin again and now back to feed (rarely now).

My main homeboy cats (father and son lookalike- Sylvesters) roam about and are used to strays coming around their whole lifetime now.  To hide, the old man (cat) sleeps in a laundry tub, the other is a mama's boy who follows me everywhere.

I never know until I hear hissing that other cats are in the house.  It isn't my cats hissing, it is the newbs.  My cats just wanna sniff and check out if they are f*ckable pffffft innocent sniffs.  hehe

God bless the cat lovers. God bless Sunshine.
