When my grandmother died in 2006, there must have been 30 feral cats living around her house.  At one time, my grandmother had a yard that was a haven for songbirds.  You could sit on the porch and see every bird imaginable.  It stopped after she started feeding those damn cats.  I have one cat, so I do sympathize with folk's affection for them.  But I am not keen on people that have a small colony living with them.  2 or 3 cats is fine, more than that is not.

More of  a dog person. But cats can be cool to. Well done.

Funny how rescuing one morphs into a small menagerie.

Many of my pets have been rescue animals as well.

KyttynTheMynx -> RE: Stray Cat (2/1/2009 10:52:50 PM)

When I was younger, I took in 2 cats.  And then it turned into 8 after finding that the female was pregnant when we took her in.  I miss those kitties.  There is one that hangs around my house, and I have been feeding it, and letting it sleep in the shed in the backyard since its well insulated, and I would feel bad if she froze.  So sad, that I cant bring the poor dear in...

SavageFaerie -> RE: Stray Cat (2/2/2009 4:27:35 AM)

Sis and I are going to start looking for a new kitteh since we lost Pye. His brother needs company.
We are definetly going the rescue route.  Looked at some yesterday when getting catfood but the ones there werent suitable for Mr Buckethead here.  Probably go with an adult of about 5-6 instead of a wee one, since he is 13, Dont want to overdo his energy.

blessings on you, bama.. and all who do rescues...

NYLass -> RE: Stray Cat (2/2/2009 8:27:11 AM)

My furry babies (2) found me.  The 3rd is my son's girlfriend's cat.  Seems her dorm doesn't allow pets, so sucker that I am, he's here.  He thinks he's the sultan with the way my girls love up on him.  I love hearing stories of rescues.  Sunny is a lucky kitty.

pixidustpet -> RE: Stray Cat (2/4/2009 1:31:18 AM)

miss jasmine kittyfurface has been here about 2 weeks now.  she thinks she needs to go EVERYWHERE that i do, will circle the bathtub when i'm in there trying to figure out "why", and thinks that the ONLY place for her to sleep is on me.  [:D]

she tolerates TheEngineer and gives him dirty looks when he takes "her" place on the sofa.  i told him "guess she knows who's the dominant around here, huh?"  she's safe.  he loves kitties.

Voodali -> RE: Stray Cat (2/4/2009 1:57:25 AM)

I didn't intend to have a cat until I saw my current kitteh, Zingiber in a cage in PetSmart or one of those big corporate places.  She looked a mess, because she had kitty alopecia !  The vet had given her a clean bill of health, but presumably the nervousness from being locked in a tiny cage for 5 months had caused her to lose all her hair.  I was afraid no one would take her because she looked so ugly, so I bagged her and took her home.  Two years later, she is a puffy ball of ginger fuzz, and so spolied you'd think she'd been enthroned on an armchair by the fire all her life.

Termyn8or -> RE: Stray Cat (2/4/2009 8:24:46 AM)

Charlie was in bad shape when he adopted my sinister,,,,errr sister. Skinny as a rag doll, fur all FUBARed up. Shaking. He would come by people and even though it was not cold, I think it was for warmth. I don't know what happened to him, but after a bit of nuturing he was all cat again.

He only lived a couple of years, but will not be forgotten.

We moved alot when I was younger, and could not tell you all the phone numbers I had, nor even all the cars I've had, but I do remember the cats.

LaTigresse -> RE: Stray Cat (2/4/2009 8:32:55 AM)

I have four (at last count) feral or dumped cats hanging around my house I dearly wish someone would catch and take. The shelters do not want them and they are costing me hundreds of dollars.

I am left to either live trap and relocate (easy but irresponsible), or shoot.

I wish there was a HUGE fine for people that have unspayed and neutered animals!

Edited to add..........when did people start spelling kitten with an H??? Cuz I gotta say, it's fucking annoying.

To be more precise, they're not spelling "Kitten" with an H...they're spelling "Kitty" with an H. ;)

Cat lovers:

Cat nips owner's lung cancer
Man credits feline friend's paws of life for discovery of large tumour

This was no ordinary CAT scan.
But Lionel Adams believes it saved his life.
Now recovering from surgery to remove cancer from his lung, Adams, 59, is crediting his eight-year-old feline friend Tiger for alerting him and his family doctor to a mass in his lung.
"He would climb into bed and take his paw and drag it down my left side -- he was adamant there was something there," he said.
"And it was right where the cancer was."

Why is it that some feel because you have a farm it is alright to drop off their "disposables"? It is NOT alright but i prefer they dump them with me than by the side of the road.

I have had more of the little angels dropped off than i can count. 5 adopted us and the rest were taken to a shelter. The five we kept are the sweetest  and most loving cats you will ever meet!

Lynnxz -> RE: Stray Cat (2/16/2009 6:29:00 AM)

There is a  beautiful bobtail near C's shop, it's one of 2-3 strays that hang around. I am worried about them because the highway is not too far away, and I don't want them to get splattered.

I'm tossing around the idea of getting a live trap to try and snag one, but I'm not sure if they are totally feral... or just a skittish stray.  :-/

As many of you may know, I do animal rescue.

About 2 weeks ago, I was headed to Kroger to get some gas for my car, when I spotted an orange tabby cat crossing a side road.  So, I turned around to see if I could help him.

I stopped my car a few yards ahead of where he was, careful not to spook him and make him head for the street in front of a car.  To my absolute surprise, he came right up to me, meowing as if to say, "What took you so long?" :)

I put him in my car and headed straight to the vet's office.  On my way there, the cat started making gagging noises, and I knew he was going to puke.  Ugh.  Luckily, I have leather seats and a had a towel underneath him.  Sure enough, he puked.  But the WORST part was that he puked up worms!!  If you've never seen it, it is one of the grossest things ever.  Apparently, he was so infested with roundworms that they had backed up from his intestines into his stomach.  Poor kitty.

I've had him for about 2 weeks now, named him Sunshine (or Sunny, for short) and he has recovered from the worm infestation, diarrhea, and he's almost over a severe upper respiratory infection.  And tonight, as I sit here typing, he is actually PLAYING for the first time.  He has found a little toy mouse and a ball, and he's batting them around the den in a frenzy!  I'm just laughing out loud!  It's so heartwarming to know that he finally feels well enough to PLAY.

Anyway, just thought I'd post this for you fellow animal lovers who were so kind to me when one of my other cats, Sebastian, passed away a few weeks ago.  I hope Sunny's story brought a smile to your face like it did mine.  [:)]

What a wonderful thing to do.  I had a pup that coughed up those round white worms and it truly is not something you want to see again.  That tabby is one lucky cat.  Bless you..  I think this planet would be a much more peaceful place if instead of saying "love they brother as thyself" which, it seems, is never gonna happen.....we would all "love the animals as we would be loved"...which might be more within the realm of possibility.
