Is this really how a majority of submissives feel? If so then why do so many submissives use it in apparently a positive, affectionate reference to themselves or others?

There is no universal way that all submissives feel, so you'll see people who like certain things that others dislike.  As has also been spelled out here, some submissives enjoy the cute familiarity between each other but do not like being referred to as such by strangers.  There are all sorts of affectionate nicknames my friends & I call each other, but were a stranger come around calling us that, we'd likely raise an eyebrow.

Status: offline 		Subbie takes something that's very important to me - my submission to a Domme, and makes it sound trivial.

I would rather it not be used - but then again, the submission is what it's all about.  So, as a preference, I would rather it not be used towards me.  However, we don't always get a choice in how we're referred to.

It's a word. I use it from time to time when I don't feel like being serious about everything. It doesn't particularly strike me as condescending. I like having silly terms because I'm a silly, happy, bubbly person.
