DomKen, we could go on forever, but can you please answer one simple question for me?
What percentage of (atmospheric) carbon dioxide is not manmade?

Do you mean released by man? Made is something you could argue definitions with.

If released is what you're asking at present CO2 is at 383ppm. In 1750, beginning of the industrial revolution and the start of man putting significant CO2 into the atmosphere, it was 275ppm. 108/383 = 0.274 so about 27.4% of the CO2 in the atmosphere is there because of human activity. Could be a bit more since we burned wood etc. before 1750 but that may have been in low enough quantities that the natural carbon cycle could handle it. The buildup since 1750 clearly shows that the natural cycle isn't able to handle all that we put out now.

Last Modified: Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 9:00 p.m. The maker of the painkiller OxyContin and three of the company's top current and former executives will pay $634.5 million in fines after pleading guilty Thursday to charges that they misled the public about the drug. A Justice Department spokeswoman said it was one of the largest financial penalties ever assessed against a drugmaker.Stamford, Conn.-based Purdue Pharma was accused of making claims that OxyContin was less addictive and less subject to abuse than other pain medications, despite warnings to the contrary from doctors, the media and members of the company's own sales force.

I'm sure you're aware- as I'm sure some of your readers are not [:)]- that Rush never committed a crime. No guilty plea. No conviction. Legally speaking, it's almost as though it never happened.

Law.com - Did Rush Limbaugh Get Off Easy in OxyContin Case?

But other experts say Limbaugh, 55, avoided prosecution as a result of an aggressive, high-priced legal fight by his attorney, Roy Black of Miami. Black challenged prosecutors' effort to obtain Limbaugh's medical records and took that fight all the way to the Florida Supreme Court.

On Friday, attorneys for Limbaugh announced that their client reached an agreement with the office of Palm Beach County State Attorney Barry Krischer that will spare him jail time, as long as he completes 18 months of drug treatment. He surrendered Friday at the Palm Beach County jail on a warrant formally charging that he withheld information from a medical practitioner. That charge is known as doctor shopping and is a third-degree felony.

........Under the deal to put the charge in abeyance, Limbaugh agreed to participate in a pretrial diversion program. It is designed for first-time drug offenders, Edmondson said.

.......Gerald Lefcourt, a New York-based attorney and the former president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, agreed that Limbaugh got a pretty common deal for first-time drug offenders.

The irony in this case, he said, is that Limbaugh long advocated tough punishment of drug offenders. In 1995, he famously said that drug users "ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up."

Well, that's all very interesting, but may I again point you back to your hero's own words:

"The first time you reach for a substance you are making a choice. Every time you go back, you are making a personal choice. I feel very strongly about that."...

Considering Rush has never had any sympathy for other people's weaknesses or excuses, why should I have any sympathy for him?

Do you somehow think he was too stupid to be aware of his own addiction?

Why didn't he seek help instead of resorting to illegal activity to obtain drugs?

Again, in Rush's own words:

"...we are rationalizing all this irresponsibility and all the choices people are making and we're blaming not them, but society for it."

This is getting real silly.  So the man took a drug to relieve pain.  Has no one here ever had a tooth ache, a back pain, a headache....and would have taken anything to relieve the pain?  Jeeez.... It's not like,..lets see..getting drunk and driving off a bridge and killing a young woman...  or, getting a "nonsexual" BJ's with an intern almost your daughters age.
What ever happened to discussing what the man is actually saying that you disagree with instead of a probable medical issue.  Let those of you who have never taken a drug for relief of stress or just to "chill"...cast the first dubbie...

Because this goes directly to what the man is saying and how hypocritical he is.

I would have no problem with his problem if he hadn't made it into an issue that helped him build his fortune.

I dont see him as hypocritical but if others in florida did the same exact thing then he shold be punished the same way.  How was he discovered as a dr shopper was by a democrat proescuiters fishing expedition.  Nobody else would have been found out that way.  Remember this when republicans play the same tricks back at democrats ;)

I believe he advocated (and may have mentioned China for example) execution for "druggies". So upon his becoming a drug addict, well its just a bit curious why he is not still advocating executing druggies.

Bill and Monica had a consentual sexual relationship. He may have been twice her age, and ,,,, so what? Your point is what? I mean its something that has existed since the very beginning of time, between both genders and every variation of preferances.
Bill's mistake was in not telling Congress (when questioned about it ) to go "Fuck themselves and mind their own god damn business!" Maybe he and hag Hillary have an open relationship. Maybe its their own business.

And now back to old hypocritical white congressional dudes sucking dick in airport bathrooms while ponitificating on the virtues of "Family values, lol. :)

Was his first time knowing it was an addictive drug?  He was prescribed it initially by a Doctor.  If I am sick and my Dr gives me a prescription I’m going to take it.  I would believe at the time Rush would never have thought that pill prescribed by his Dr would create an addiction problem like Crack. That’s how this is different than someone experimenting with drugs.  There was no experimenting causing the addiction with Rush, the drug was given to him by a doctor for a health issue.  So Rushs first time was at the direction of a doctor and then Rush became addicted to the pill.  He did not choose to become addicted by the initial usage like people who are addicted to coke.

C'mon. That has to be the weakest, most pathetic rationalization I've seen on this board in months. Rush didn't know that oxycontin is addictive. Right.

Even if you assume that he was somehow one of the, say, six human beings in the United States who didn't know oxycontin is addictive, Federal law requires that the bottle be clearly labeled with a warning that the drug can be habit-forming. Are you saying he was too stupid and/or too irresponsible to read the warning labels on his own prescriptions and listen to the warnings of his doctor and pharmacist? At what point do you stop making excuses for the guy? An addict is an addict is an addict, and a hypocrite is a hypocrite is a hypocrite. He is both.

Well Clinton was caught, impeached, lost his law license and apologized till the cons were tired of hearing them.

Limbaugh was caught and got away scott free.

Then there`s the hypocrisy about drugs, addiction and illegal use......

It wasn`t just Oxiconton, either. This thug has a pattern of illegal use and thumbing his nose at the law.

Limbaugh was detained for more than three hours Monday at the airport after returning from a vacation in the Dominican Republic. Customs officials found the Viagra in his luggage but his name was not on the prescription, said Paul Miller, a spokesman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office."

So you are telling me he has called for not just his failure but his death ;)

http://www.aim.org/aim-column/coke-and-a-smoke-for-obama/

An article in the February 26, 2007 issue of Newsweek discusses how Obama has "reached for the occasional cigarette, especially in times of stress." Chris Carter, who runs QuitNet, the world's largest quit-smoking program, told the magazine that "a lot of doctors view this [nicotine addiction] as on par with overcoming a heroin addiction." In fact, according to Newsweek, the withdrawal symptoms from nicotine addiction for a longtime smoker like Obama can cause an individual to become cranky, have trouble sleeping and making decisions, and gaining weight. Newsweek reported that Obama chews Nicotine gum "throughout the day," which tempers the public signs of withdrawal from the drug, but is a clear indication that he is not over his addiction.  The matter of breaking the habit is treated by Newsweek as if it were a badge of courage on Obama's part. Newsweek quotes Obama campaign communications director Robert Gibbs who told the magazine that Obama is "occasionally tempted but he's on the straight and narrow." He added, "Most people who are trying to quit are so concerned about failing they don't want to tell anybody. I think it's pretty bold of Obama to publicly, intensely try."  Quitting smoking is an accomplishment, but just trying to quit means nothing. It certainly doesn't deserve accolades from the media. As the saying goes, "Quitting is easy; I've done it hundreds of times." Inflating his nicotine addiction into the equivalent of overcoming tremendous human suffering and adversity, the Newsweek writers ask, "Who says quitters never win?" That assumes he will quit and that it should have any bearing on his fitness to be president.

What always troubled me is why a bigger deal wasn't made of this. Three possibilities exist:
1) He and his golf buddies were actually sex tourists.
2) He and his golf buddies are more fuck buddies than golf buddies
3) Rush really thought he would get consensually lucky in the DR and went to the trouble to illegally acquire Viagra just in case.

Seems to me that 1 and 2 are a lot more likely than 3.

That doesn't matter. Oxycontin is the same drug as percodan, and it's widely known by everyone in the medical community that percodan is highly addictive if improperly used. Your own link makes it clear that doctors and pharmicists already knew it. The drug was known to be addictive, and by federal law is prescribed and clearly labeled as such. It's not as if Purdue was putting labels on the bottles saying, "This drug is sorta addictive, but not really that bad". Are you saying Rush Limbaugh was so stupid and so irresponsible he ignored his doctor and the labels on the bottles, and took his medical advice from a drug manufacturer's press release? Hell, even he isn't making that excuse for himself.  Nobody tricked him or misled him; he knew exactly what he was doing.

Okay this part about the poor doctor got him addicted....I was injured in an on the job accident in March of 05 seven surgeries later ,untold Vicodin prescriptions have been written.None have been filled that weren't needed, when exiting my doctors office and being offered a script I have on numerous occasions pointed out to the Doc that I still had refills on my old script.
I considered it my responsibility to moderate my own drug usage...the label clearly says take as needed for pain....it is up to the individual to learn to differentiate between uncomfortable and actual real pain. These aren't tictacs folks....blaming doctors for personal behavior only works for the rich and famous.
edited because i substituted victorian for vicodin,,,freudian slip maybe?

He`s a junkie multiple lawbreaker elitist connected arrogant rich-guy hypocrite(the real kind).

OJ didn`t beat double murder cuz he was black. It was b/c he was rich and connected.

Limbaugh acts and operates as if the law doesn`t apply to him.As if he`s above such trivial things.

And if you should unfortunately become addicted as a side affect, you go to treatment and get help.

Not send your house keeper to score hundreds of illegal prescription pills.

I don`t buy the Dr. story.Every junkie uses the same lame excuse.

Are we now going to give drunk drivers a pass b/c they`re victims of addiction?

Hell no.

This bully was getting high on an illegal substance(s),un-perscribed drugs.
