Yup. The bailout got renamed a rescue package and eventually a stimulus.

The Patriot Act was a major incursion into civil liberties that out Founders would have been furious at.

Orwell would have been proud.

Torture = extreme interrogation techniques

Global warming = climate change

Terrorist surveilance program = warrantless wiretapping of every phone call made within the US.

POW = enemy combatant (therefore not covered by the Geneva Conventions)

George Orwells fault Uncle Nasty...If he hadnt written animal farm and 1984, we would all believe everything we are told and everything we think, this covers more than politics and goes into advertising, news, etc etc etc.

Let polluters dump more crap into the air= "Clear Skies Initiative".

The accurate term is "climate change".

But since you`re a "denier" on the issue in the 1st place and not interested in a honest discussion about it,why be concerned with the terms used?

Good morning everyone.. Lucy, in particular...

The article I linked to gives several examples of Republicans using Newspeak a little further down, though Collarchat policy says that I can't paste entire news articles due to copyright laws.

I think that many of the examples given so far are valid, so no, I won't try to argue that it's a left or right thing.

I remember reading Orwell in school, I had a wonderful english teacher who pushed us into understanding the subtext, I didnt think much about it for a long time, but remember thinking in 1984 that both books "warnings" had been around a few years. 25 years later we are saturated with it.

The sad thing is we all can point out the total bullshit that is going on within our government, but NOBODY gets off their ass to do anything about it. We can have a bitch fest for hours, but what is that going to accomplish?

I think that obfuscation and justification are near natural consequences of bureaucracy. Everyone in the organization witnesses the results of speaking the honest, plain truth and learns (often with assistance) to tune the communications to the ear of the recipient. Exceptions to this tend to be truly exceptional people, in my opinion.

I don't see your point...We all have goals in our lives and in a group or at an individual level we figure the best way to accomplish it. It is not the think tanks that are evil... it is the intent of evil people.

Not knowingly....and not for long. Yes most people have too many worries in their everyday life to spend the time necessary to analyze every action of their government. But given time they usually see through lies.

Just to add Sanity..I have faith in people like you to see through the mass manipulation and express yourself to others. If you are correct then you will change minds... and eventually enough will change their minds or see through the propaganda to make a difference.

Yup. Terrible how so many of us sat here and talked about it through most of the Bush regime... and only now you are willing to aknowledge it.

But it's okay... at least now we have a President, and a majority in Congress that will push for repairing the damage to the Constitution. Personally, I'm looking forward to the war crimes trials of Bush and Cheaney and their minions. It may not happen here in the US, but the european courts don't seem to have a problem with doing the right thing.

So, eventually....

Oh I completely disagree. There are many who unknowingly repeat the latest mantra, and there are many who actively seek out the new terminology as handed down from the think tank gods in order to push things on us that we wouldn't otherwise accept.

It's how things are organized and how things are done. Where religion once was literally king, Newspeak and think tanks now control the masses.

Same as it ever was...

And I could be wrong on this, but it appears to me to be the case that those on the left are far more susceptible to being manipulated through changes in the use of words than those on the right.

Communism's out. Socialism's out. Liberalism's out. The beautiful people are all Progressives now...

But... who is "Liberal" these days. Isn't everybody except for the two or three "Neocon" right wing extremists remaining in the Republican party "Progressive" now...
