*sigh*  Another "teaching a pig to sing" thread, complete with ad-hominems and slurs!

ed to add:  Good guy wins; liberals upset.   What's new?

If only we could all be as noble and impartial as you.

But let's talk about that good guy winning remark.

Even some people here who are gun supporters found the whole story this thread is based on to be suspect.

Do you remember several weeks back when Lou Dobbs had a story about a home invasion in Tuscon?  He praised the homeowner for defending himself against four armed intruders and ended the story saying "I guess we can say once again, thank you for the second amendment.  Thank you Lord."

The only problem was he didn't find it curious that a very small, modest house was being protected by a surveillance system rivaling that of a gated mansion.  He also didn't find it odd that the "victim" he was praising just happened to be monitoring the security system at the time, and just happened to have a loaded firearm next to the door that he used to drive off the intruders after they were barely out of the car.

He also didn't find it unusual that the police described one of the intruders as an associate of the victim.

He also completely ignored the fact the Pima County sheriff he interviewed speculated the incident was over drugs, instead preferring to lavish praise on the "victim" who defended his home and family (even though nothing in any of the reports suggested there was a family to protect).

Let me see here.............a video surveillance system surrounding a modest home, an attacker who police describe as an "associate".  If I was the suspicious sort, I might wonder if this was someone dealing drugs out of his home.

But I'm sure you and Lou are right, they were just two of the "good guys" winning.

Here's a partial transcript:  (this is the entire transcript of that show, the story is about halfway down)

So, you're defending the rights of drug dealers to defend themselves against against people trying to steal their drugs.

Yanno, rule, on some subjects it's getting to the point where some people don't really need to put any content in their posts. All they need to do is just type a "." and click Submit. We'll still be able to tally their vote, and it'll spare everyone having to read snotty comments about what nobody said anyway.

Just a thought.

Yeah, no reason to be upset. They were only going to steal all they could and rape some women.

I don't think (and I guess that's subject to correction) that I make a practice of flipping people off by posting wise-crack claims that they're saying things they didn't say. I usually try, at least, to make a point that I believe has some merit and support. Do you see me otherwise? Or are you just observing, tangentially, that we all tend to get to know each others' opinions? I suppose so. Though truth be told, I've kinda thought that I might have surprised a person or two on that score once in a while!

I guess Police officers shouldn't have firearms either.

Actually being local here, there are a few more additional rumors floating around. The residents of the apartment has regular parties, where many other college kids showed up. Many of these other college kids drove nice vehicles and dressed pretty well. The apartments they lived in were low income, so the college kids may have seemed an easy mark. There is also a rumor floating about that one of the attackers was asked to leave one of these parties the weekend before, because he was causing problems. So far no local rumors about drugs being involved. None of this has been confirmed yet.

So you think it was worth it to almost kill an innocent girl ...I could care less about the crooks... what about all the rounds going through walls that could kill innocents… is it worth it in your world?... Not mine... Now if five guys were in a small room with one crook and he took his eyes off me long enough to get a gun out of a bag they could have taken him down... or if he had the drop on the guy he could have been ready to shoot but gave him a chance to drop it first.

The hero was not responsible and could have killed more than one innocent... that is my point. Amateurs with guns are as much of a danger to innocents around them than the crooks.

Won't go into they could have done this or that scenarios. You are correct they can be as dangerous, but looking from the other side the chances went from no chance of survival and everyone dead, to one of theirs wounded, both perps running and one perp dead.

Which has a bearing on this how?

My point in all this was these stories keep popping up about home invasions when many of them are actually attempts to steal drugs from a dealer or some other dispute involving criminals that are hailed as "heroes" by those desperate to prove guns are a necessity for home protection.

Granted, I'm speculating, but the version of events in this story doesn't add up and even the police did not buy the homeowner's version in the Dobb's story.

These aren't innocent people just being targeted for no reason.

Do you really think that two armed men are going to break into a randomly chosen apartment in a low-income area to steal a few cell phones and some petty cash from these innocent college kids, as the story implies?

i dont understand why you cant accept that it may be just what it is.....folks tryin to rob some college kids who were partying.  there is no evidence to suggest it is anything else.

For what it's worth, not me. Not anymore. You're probably a lot more conservative than I am, but I learned long ago that you're easily as independent and fairminded a thinker as there is on these boards. Just so's you now it's not completely unnoticed.

Not upset.

Just wondering why gun fondler's don`t mention the times when that same gun ruins a good guy`s day.Like when a family member or loved one is hurt or killed.

That`s also part of the equation.Guns don`t magically make the right things happen or stop the bad ones.

Wow, it isn't the gun's fault?  It is the person holding the gun?  Golly, what an original thought......

As I said earlier, I'm just speculating.

The reason I can't accept it is because there are too many things in this story that don't make sense, as kdsub pointed out earlier.

That's understandable, but if that's the case we should find out soon enough. Police are such pesky fuckers. Whenever someone gets shot to death, they can't seem to stop themselves from sticking their noses into it. If there was dope being dealt there, they'll find out.

folks do get hurt when accidents happen.  heck my cousin shot him self in the foot when he was about 18ish while checking out what he thought was a burglar.  luckily, he learned a lesson and kept his life.  (not to mention we still rag him about it 35 years later)

but there are times when good comes from being armed.  lives are saved.  this seems to me like it was one of those times.

id bet the guy that shot and killed the intruder has run the scenario over in his mind 100's of times, thinking coulda woulda shoulda.....but the fact remains, all the innocents survived this time.
