"may well be" are the key words.  Eg there is a lot of inequality in the US, with considerable freedom and no tyranny (yet).

Really?

You don't think it is a form of tyranny that wealthy corporations and wealthy individuals can spend millions on lobbyists and campaign contributions to gain influence over our elected representatives, and have legislation they favor passed as a result?

No, and if you think my statement implies that, then you need to take a logic course.

The irony here is incredible. You seriously believe that a man who was elected president of the Harvard Law Review, and was a professor of constitutional law, has done nothing in his life worthy of respect, and yet you are suggesting that someone else needs to take a course in logic?

It has nothing to do with logic, and everything to do with what you respect. Everything he has accomplished was achieved more through manipulation of the systems he was surrounded by than his own abilities. Is he intelligent? Obviously. Is that worthy of respect in and of itself? No.

no. tyranny = absolute power vested in a single individual. We arent even close.

...from the online Merriam-Webster....

"1: oppressive power <every form of tyranny over the mind of man — Thomas Jefferson> ; especially : oppressive power exerted by government <the tyranny of a police state>2 a: a government in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler ; especially : one characteristic of an ancient Greek city-state b: the office, authority, and administration of a tyrant3: a rigorous condition imposed by some outside agency or force <living under the tyranny of the clock — Dixon Wecter>"

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tyranny

...it would appear you're attempting to use just one of the definitions in order to bolster your preconceived position. Definition 2 is the one you're using. However, definitions 1 and 3 would seem to be what RML was driving at. i strongly suspect though that you knew that.

Hmm?  Manipulation of the systems he was surrounded by?

No, I think you're getting Bush and Obama confused.

It was Bush who started off with the silver spoon in his mouth and proceeded to be propped up by Daddy and Granddaddy but ultimately proved  a complete incompetent in every endeavor he tried, including the Presidency.

Obama was the one who came from more humble beginnings and worked for what he accomplished.  And he actually accomplished something of his own making, as opposed to someone who had everything handed to him and still failed.

But if you get confused again about who is who, just try and remember that Obama is the guy in office now trying to correct everything that the spoiled little rich boy ignored while he was out on his bicycle, fishing off Kennebunkport, and clearing brush at the ranch.

If you read my prior posts then you would understand that my opinion is that tyranny can be approached from the left through socialism and communisim, and from the right through libertarianism (both potentially passing through anarchy briefly). I have also already agreed that there are "degrees of tyranny" which, if it isnt obvious, refers to the concentration of power in fewer and fewer hands until it becomes a single individual. Nothing I have said is inconsistent with definition1 if you take it in context. Im surprised I had to spell that out for you.

Unfortunately, in this day and age it's impossible to get to the root of the issue. If people were willing to be honest with themselves and each other, we'd find that what we have here is what I like to call (in polite company) a "Blazing Saddles" type of conundrum.

A couple of thousand years ago water-boarding was known by another name: baptism. "I BELIEVE!"

After reading part of this it looks like the real question here is not about water-boarding but who is right and who is left and that these two groups are at war with each other or would like to be. Can someone furthermore explain where the idea comes from lefties do not water-board?

Yes, it's one of the rules of waterboarding that you have to be right-handed to do it.

Something to do with getting the proper angle and leverage I think.

So what is it exactly that you believe?

Baptism and waterboarding are both methods of torture?

I can't believe you said that. Well, actually I can. I've lost count of the number of times you've steered the discussion back to Bush/Cheney/Blah when the other team was about to score a point.

This is bullshit!  Just another lie from the right handed world trying to demean and belittle us left handed people!  If they can manufacture left handed wrenches then they sure as hell can manufacture left handed waterboarding equipment!  I demand the hiring of left handed waterboarders now!

Hmm...  now that I think about it maybe that's why President Obama is against waterboarding.  He's left handed and is embaressed that he can't do it.

Are you sure Obama is against waterboarding? I learned he says one can torture Laura and Michelle and get away with it though it is not the right thing to do.
