I am suprised no one has mentioned this lately. What with the recent tests, both of nuclear bombs and missile systems, surely North Korea is a bigger danger to world peace than Iraq and Iran ever where.

The fact NK have WMD`s already and are making threats to South Korea, and in doing so, US forces, is a major concern. Or at least it should be. This is the only area of the world I can imagine a limited use of battlefield nuclear weapons taking place.

The fact that they've abandoned the truce that ended the Korean war probably makes it even more of an issue...

Personally, I'm looking forward to M*A*S*H TNG

Our forces in the SK are a trip wire. If NK wanted to sweep down we don't have enough men there to stop them. This though is a prime example of what happens when you try diplomicy with crazies. Best option.. turn it over to the generals... imo.

Iran and North Korea are both ramping up the rhetoric to test our new President. So far he has done little in the face of these new tests accept asking the United Nations for more 'talk'. As long as they see him as a weak President it will only get worse.

Interesting.

Here I thought the ramping up of both these countries' nuclear programs began after someone (whose name escapes me) called them part of an "axis of evil".

Who was that guy anyway?  Don't you hate it when something's on the tip of your tongue and you just can't remember?

North Korea just tested a nuclear bomb larger than those used to end WWII. I don't remember them trying something like that while President Bush was in office. They feel they can do anything right now..

And the reason you don't remeber that is they didn't have the capability at the time.

Their advancements didn't just magically accelerate in the four short months Obama has been in office.

This has actually been going on for a while. I am sure new prodding will occur since the message sent by Bush was "I am willing to go to war and use nukes to protect our interest in South Korea". Bush did not say exactly that, but with what he did in Iraq without proof, and military responses to NK during his term, it was pretty clear.

All we have to do is wait long enough for this crazy to die, and hope the next is not as crazy. While it has been small nukes they have been testing, up till this point, it does not take a large one to be devastating to the area. This is one area where we need to show that we will not flinch, and will respond if NK shows aggression.

Either that or pull our troops out, and let the rest of the world deal with this shit. This is my prefered method, but that is just wishful thinking.

Rule you are contradicting yourself. You say they didn't have the capability four months ago, and they say they couldn't have gotten it in just four months. I would guess they had it four short months ago and would not test the Bush administration as they are testing President Obama. On Orions point, Kims son will apparently take over but he is a nut case like the old man. They say he might even be worse...

Wasn't there a Lehrer thread a little while back? Probably on the Humor page.

No, what I'm saying is to develop their nuclear program took steady progress over many years.

The fact they are doing this now has to do with their progressing to the point they felt these tests would be viable, not anything to do with who is in the Oval Office.

Funny, they did their first nuclear test in October 2006....when your boy was in, so I suspect some selective memory in play here.

Edited to correct a glaring typo

Let that be a lesson to you, never to trust your memory when it puts your credibility at stake. North Korea's first nuclear test was in 2006. You might also want to do a little googling before making outlandish claims about the size of the latest bomb; most reliable estimates put it in the range of 1.5 to 6 kilotons, far smaller than the Hiroshima bomb. Not that I see what relevance that has, but since you seem to put a lot of stock in it for some reason, I figured I might as well shoot that one down too as long as I was at it.

Let's see... NK = (maybe) 3 bombs by the end of the year.... No ICBM capability as yet.
USA = 12,000 warheads. Multiple forms of delivery, including cruise, MIRV and snoopy
Rest of the World = God only knows.

Still, I wonder who will win if the worst case scenario comes to pass?

The cockroaches? Assuming there's really any truth to that old urban legend.

I think they did that one on Mythbusters... I think they confirmed it... I say, let's give the cockroaches their shot! They certainly can't do any worse than us, creating crap like deep fried Twinkies, heart attack burgers and "reality TV."

I remember the end of the Cold War, when we found out that the Soviet bloc's entire battleplan for attacking western Europe consisted of racing west as fast as possible in order to seize enough fuel that their attack would not be brought to a halt given they lacked enough of their own fuel for more than a day or so, even for the small proportion of the vehicles they possessed which actually worked. I would strongly suspect that North Korea's much vaunted conventional forces would be found to be in the same parlous condition.

The matter at hand however is nuclear weaponry - albeit so far it seems the North Korean regime has yet to combine nuclear weapon with missile, they do possess an ICBM that could reach parts of the US. Nevertheless even the most insane dictator and his most loyal subjects must recognise the inability to win any conflict involving such weaponry.

What we are seeing I believe is the opening round of another set of negotiation on the part of North Korea, using the ability to destroy the entire area as bargaining chip. What we are seeing I hope is the opening of the end game for North Korea, using that same bargaining chip to strike the best deal and safeguards in coming out of the cold.

Overall though, however much influence we can bring to bear on this, it is with the Chinese that the direct influence lies. And they certainly do not want to see the US dragged into another conflict - especially one where total destruction of entire areas may occur, given their possession of so much US debt.

What is the U.S. supposed to do, give them another $2 B of the Taxpayer's money again like Clinton did?
Fuck em'! Just ignore them and let China deal with them.

$2 billion is pretty cheap for what it would buy

but my suspicion is that the NK regime is putting itself well out on a limb here in a way which will be difficult for them to retreat from without losing face, even with the insane media they put out domestically. and suspecting equally their actual inability to mount much of an attack on anyone still less win any conflict, one must conclude that we are seeing their usual form of diplomacy at work here.

Except that this time they hold bargaining chips of increasing value, with which they might obtain something more valuable to them than on previous occasions. This also explains why they are going so out on a limb with the risk of losing face that involves should it not work out for them.

One must then ask what is it that they want which is worth this risk to them?

And one can conclude also that they have overbid their hand greatly here - if the rest of the world doesnt give them what they want and instead holds fast - for their inability to make real on the threat of conflict invites brinkmanship. It is then down to the level of insanity of "dear leader" and the loyalty to him as to how volatile things become; saving face might involve self destruction after all, but I suspect that what they are seeking here may well turn out to be something we can gladly give them.
