My 7 year old um would climb back in if he could.  He's already told his Dad and I that he "likes girls' boobies".   I couldn't IMAGINE still breastfeeding him at this age.  If the kid is dextrous enough to unbutton Mommy's blouse, he is too old for ME to breastfeed him.

Don't forget what the poor kid would go through if his school age friends found out he was still on the tit.

Let's face it.  Past a certain point, it has nothing to do with what may be best for the child.  It has to do with the selfishness of the mother and her inability to let go.

And yes, I say "may be best" because I am not going to insult any mothers who chose not to breast feed, who adopted their child and therefore couldn't breast feed, or the women who may have tried and they couldn't for whatever reason.  All the media hype on breast feeding tends to make those women feel as though they are not as "good" a mom as the ones who do breast feed.

If you are going to do it in a public place, then yes, you need to concern yourself with what others may or may not be ready for.  Kind of why we leave the room when we pass gas.  So as not to disrupt the peace of those around us.

The real problem with the world?

quote:

Kind of why we leave the room when we pass gas.

Who is we? I know way to many people, especially guys, who wouldn’t leave the room.

quote:

No it actually wouldn't be explain like that.

Yes, I would explain it like that.

quote:

The child will continue to breast feed because that is what they know.

That is pretty much what I said, with different words.

quote:

It is the parent's job to teach their child what is and is not appropriate as well as teaching them boundaries and what should be done in private.

I prefer why something might not be appropriate, aposed to what is or is not; the other way comes off as dictatorship, I’m trying to raise thinkers.

quote:

However, if I see your school age child come up to you in a public place, unbutton your blouse and latch on, I will tell you that you should be doing that at home in private and in all liklihood, wean them off the boob.

If I were to do that, I suspect I would have a good reason for it, and would tell you to kindly mind your own business.

quote:

Incidentally, if I saw an eight year old sucking on a pacifier or drinking from anything other than a soda bottle, I would likely comment to the parent that it is time for them to stop as well.

quote:

I might ask if they know it is bad for the teeth, but since I’ve seen parents mess up their kids doing things that are perfectly acceptable in the eyes of the ‘general public’; I’d hold off on chastising, or I’d have to address them all.

quote:

There is a law in NY that says women have the right to go topless.

Well, as long as there’s a law.

quote:

It doesn't mean that they should.  Just like having the right to openly breast feed in public means there is no reason mom shouldn't be discreet about it.

Right; to spare others their embarrassment. I say, tough titty.

That is their problem to deal with, not that of the mother who can.

That's a tall order, lol. I'll have to check my English to English dictionary and get back to you

Don't you think that it is solely the parent's responsibility to determine if and when they wean their own offspring? Having a stranger coming up and telling a nursing mother how long to nurse their offspring is akin to me walking up to a parent and telling them they are raising their offspring incorrectly.

Does the child not have a right in it's own right ... to feed? if so, by extension, it would be abuse of the rights of an innocent child for the natural process to be interrupted?  ( ... anyone know any good compensation lawyers ? ...... think of the trauma damages ... !)

Since I was fed breastmilk for a time, by now you can all see the beneficial results ... ban breast feeding and you won't have crazy offspring with shaved heads and tickly beards blaming the Queen for everything !

... at least babies sucking on your tits in public does not cause as much uproar as fully grown men doing the same ... oh, ok ... yes it does.

It's a tender moment and one that strengthens the bond between mother and child. I think it should be done if possible in a quiet semi private place if you're not at home. But if the baby is hungry I also wouldn't make it wait until I could find a place if I was out running errands. I also wouldn't just leave everything hanging out either, I'd drape a blanket over my shoulder and across the baby's back to cover us both  up, it'd offer some privacy at least.

I don't see breastfeeding as taboo, it's a natural thing to do and it should be done. I don't think mothers should be condemed for it. Master has told me several times that when I have his children that bottles will not be allowed unless for some reason I am unable to breastfeed. So for myself expressing would not be an option. If we could afford it as well I'd stay home to raise the child for at least two if not three or four years.

My girl just thought of something. If you are out and there are people that have a problem with public breast feeding, just wait a short while until the baby gets real hungry. Then make sure to be real close to them when the baby vocally announces that food is wanted now.

It's a good idea *smiles*, unfortunately, because those type of people have such hard time realizing the problem is with them, they would just blame the parent and baby for that too.

Hopefully, the mother would have taught her child that while out in public you do not grab at my breasts and you do not demand I feed you. It's up to mom to teach the older child who's still nursing discretion and rules.

So logically, for those who feel this is a completely normal rational thing, do you also think that it is completely appropriate for an eight year old to go unbutton mommy's top in McDonald's and breast feed?

I agree, if u choose to keep breastfeeding your child way past the toddler years then the mother should at least lay down some ground rules. I was watching this video awhile back on the internet about this British woman who still breastfeed her daughter at like 10....she would just climb up in the mothers lap and help herself. I mean if thats how u wanna roll by all means roll on sister but when they get to be that age they should have a set of rules for a time and a place.
