brandi1379 -> Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:02:03 AM)

So while i was stumblin through the intereweb I  came upon an artical about a woman who was asked to leave a local Mcdonalds for breastfeeding her 4-month old. Here is the link to the artical

http://www.kentucky.com/181/story/482335.html (sorry im not sure how to make it a clickable link)

this isnt the first time ive heard about something like this happening, There was a woman in New York who was arrested and charged with puplic lewdness for doing the same thing. My question to yall is how do u feel about public breastfeedings? and to woman how would u react if u were asked not to feed your child in public?

Loki45 -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:04:05 AM)

I think the tender, miraculous little moment should be had at home, personally. I have always questioned why a woman would want to have such a tender moment with her child when society has such a plethora of pervs around.

How I react depends on my mood. When I was a waiter, I'd ignore it. If I were in a pissy mood in public, I might stare longingly just to make a point. The point being "if you didn't want me starring at your naked tit, don't take it out in public.

Deleted because it's a hot button for me and I wasn't thinking when I responded.  The whole thread will likely be pulled for subject matter, and I don't need a hand-slap for participating.

My kingdom for a delete button.

People aren't against mom feeding the baby, just the way she does it. Why not express the milk into a bottle before you leave home if you know you'll be out when baby's hungry?

OttersSwim -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:11:09 AM)

Yea, feeding times don't easily coincide with when you can be home.  I don't expect people to be housebound just because of someone's squeemishness at knowing that beneath that blanket...there is a naked breast...

Below that shirt and bra...there is a naked breast...and over there too!  OMG!!!  They are everywhere!
Mondo Ta-Tas!!!!

Is it special act? Yes.  Is it also a completely mundane act? Yea.

I have never seen a nursing mother who was blatant or flashing about any part of the process.  All I have seen cover themselves completely.  Hungry UMs need food...

ShaharThorne -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:12:35 AM)

1. Depends on the state laws. If the woman did not have sufficent coverage (jacket, shawl), there is that question of public lewdness. But I know it does not matter in TX since we have a law allowing public breastfeeding. It that people need to know the law before assuming that breastfeeding is evil.

2. Loki, not to fight with you but when the child is hungry at that moment, tis better to whip it out and feed the child than to have an angry and annoyed crowd who thinks you are neglecting the child by not feeding it. I had to do it a few times in public and people were touched that I put my um first until I got her weaned onto formula.

Yes, but here's my take:

If you feel the need to cover your body and the feeder with a blanket....you know....walls are much better than blankets for privacy. Or as the other poster pointed out - use a pump at home, bring bottles for public. But then again, this is all dependant on my other views about rearing which are, when its born....take some fucking time off and raise the thing. It's not an accessory to match your purse, it's another life. In my family, I would not want him/her taken out of my home until it was old enough to wear and needs its own shoes. But again, that's just my take.

kttqnp -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:17:15 AM)

Personally, I found it difficult to express my milk in sufficient quantities for that purpose; maybe this mother had the same experience.  Unless you're used to doing it, it's not easy.  And I just couldn't train the baby to only be hungry at home!

Just as you can't train one to be silent in a movie theater. Why is it that "you can't make it do x, y, z only at home" is an excuse for anything? You can't make one be silent, so why do *I* have to hear it screaming during the movie I paid $10 for? Why do *I* have to stare at a half-naked tit when I'm eating my lunch?

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:20:44 AM)

You be absolutely stark raving hungry, not understand WHY you're not being fed, no wait don't have that ability to understand why not just know you're hungry and you're screaming your head off, and nobody will feed you. need to eat and need to eat
NOW.

THEN tell us you think it should wait till the women get home.

Besides most women cover up before popping it out and feeding, you're not going to be seeing a bare tit just flopped out in the open.

intenze -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:21:00 AM)

There are lots of ways to cover up when you feed your baby.  You don't have to flash your nipples.  The whole thing about expressing is pretty silly. People who bother to commit to breastfeeding, and yeah it is a hell of a commitment, should be able to relax and feed their kids.

LOL I just realized yeah this thread will probably be pulled but hey if it was about scat or adult nursing it would be ok. Go figure.

Then how about just stay home to begin with? If.....and this is a HUGE, God-induced "IF"......but if I ever start a family, my offspring will not be leaving the safety of my home for anything other than family gatherings and doctor visits.

A wall makes a much better cover than a blanket.

A movie theater is not an appropriate place for a nursing baby.  A McDonald's is.  And when it was absolutely necessary for me to nurse in public, I did it discreetly, fully covered.  Most of the time, no one around me even noticed.

That's your opinion and you're entitled to it.. Personally, were it my son/daughter, HOME would be the appropriate place and it would be non-negotiable.

~FR~

Loki.. I do adore you.. but in this I disagree.  The woman is NOT flopping her tit out for any lascivious purpose.  She is feeding her child in the manner that her body was built to do.  If you are STARING at her tit, thats on you, not her.

just sayin'

ETA:  So.. a nursing mother should not leave her home?? LOKI!! I'm ashamed of you...  I thought you were more tolerant than that.   *sighs*

ShaharThorne -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:26:12 AM)

All I can recommend is to contact the La LEche representative in your area about the need to carrying expressed milk compared to having it in its natural state. ITs there and ready when you have to go shopping but when its expressed, unless its cooled, its starts breaking down (needs to attend the next BF class). I only expressed so her father can have the joys of feeding her while I made his coffee and got breakfast ready (he could not believe how much I could express and all the bottles lined up in the icebox).

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:27:47 AM)

You don't, just look the other way and deal with the fact that women have a right to feed their baby how they choose, and you can act like an adult and ignore it, or you can act like an  ass and purposly try to make someone uncomfortable, which if it was me, and you were staring lewdly at me, because I had my baby feeding on my tit under a privacy blanket,  I'd call the cops and tell them there was a strange guy staring lewdly and acting like a creep in public, and let the cops come out and have a little chaty chat chat with you.

ShaharThorne, it's been 33 years since I breastfed, but you're right, LaLeche League is a great resource.  I'm impressed with your abilities; I just could never do that.  My let-down reflex wouldn't work with a pump, so all I ever got was a few drops.

Greedy, thank goodness. You know I'm a rational thinking person. I'm not trying to be super-ass here (at least not in this thread ;)

I'm just saying. There was a time when tender private things like this were done at home. A time when no one expected to see a nursing mother because her husband or family treated her like a queen and got anything she desired brought right to her bed side.

But in today's increasingly frivolous world, women walk around with little yappy dogs in their purse. Anything becomes "an accessory" and not a life the person is responsible for. In my opinion, if a um is that young, it doesn't need to be out anyway. I would be appalled at my significant other if she were to take mine out "to McDonald's" in such a vulnerable time in its life.

This is an increasingly dangerous time. People will victimize another person for $4 and kicks on a Friday night. I would not want my tiny little precious life risked that haphazardly.

Yes it's a 'tender, miraculous thing' between the parent and Um........but it also puts both in an unnecessarily vulnerable position. And there's no reason to me to risk that.

Why should she 'have' to? Why should she risk her child in this dangerous world? Because she "can?"
