i would think if their reasoning is to ask about anything that might reflect badly on the city, they should also ask what bars do you frequent? restaurants you dine at?  corners you hook on? (ok that was not a great example), but wouldnt what you do in the city you work in/reside in reflect more on you and them than where you might blog or have discussions on the internet?

there are specific laws that regulate what you can and can not ask of applicants. i cant imagine this practice passing muster if challenged.

You don't see the enormous difference between the government having access to your personal information, and giving a prospective employer the username and password for every website you visit?

Not particularly.

If they want to check out websites I visit...more power to them.
Since I don't use the computer for anything else [8D] ( financial etc ), it really does not matter if they get passwords or not.
Anything work related, they already have access to, whether I am at home or right there with them looking over my shoulder.

I have nothing to hide in my life...if they want open access...have at it...saves me the trouble of giving them that information myself.

And, just to keep things straight...my teenager says the same thing...she could care less because she has nothing to hide. Her words to me...they have my name, they have my SSN, they have everything they need to find anything they want...what would hiding do?

I noticed that you don't have your real name listed in your profile, why not? After all you have nothing to hide, right?

And since you don't mind the idea of people you don't know havingaccess to all your sites, why don't you give out your usernames and passwords? After all, you have nothing to hide from us do you? Keep in mind, that CollarMe is a forum site, one of the things they are asking for. Are you comfortable giving out your CM login & password?
The other aspect, that hasn't been addressed, what is to stop some city employee (who now has all your login info) from causing trouble for you by writing stuff using your accounts, either in here, or with your emails.
I have very little to hide, from a potential emplyer as well, but still feel like this is going way over the line. I would never give them that info, its none of their damned business.

So if an applicant lies- say checks "none",   or omits- - then that is grounds for termination.

Grannies cedar chest in the attic has letters and pictures and stuff-   family reunions- .family newsletter, Christmas cards, maybe even a dildo box!!  ..an employer doesn't have to right to that.

If they dig- and see it- fine.  But to REQUIRE it to be handed over- crosses the line.

Yes- the net is public... but only up to a point. 

If someone sloppily posts damaging stuff everywhere- poster beware.  Understood.

No, it was a serious question.

If you mean by a profile certain basic information, that's one thing.

If you mean by a profile the government knows everything about everyone then you need to provide some facts to back up that broad assertion.

That's a job I wouldn't be applying for.  I'd give them my log-in info for pvt emails, legitmate e-commerce sites, and banks and bill-pay sites I do online business with over my dead body.

Ok, when I took the G26 clearance forms (or whatever the hell they call them) This was on there, but they didnt ask for passwords
Not sure honestly why they would need to ask, a password isnt that hard for a good hacker to get past, especially not one set up on a website. I can almost understand them wanting to make sure that you dont have terrorist affiliations but if they want my passwords they can just try to get them the old fashioned way. Though I did give up my username to this and other sites, because I knew what they were looking for, and because my employment was already settled. In this case where it looks lik it is part of the initial job application, they can eat a bowl of dick

If they want my facebook, they can have it. They will be subjected to pages upon pages of stupid quizzes and photos.
They can have my myspace too, is about the same. They can easily find that if they search for my name.

However, they cannot have my email or passwords, and if there is a problem then I can happily find another job. Unless, of course, the person conducting the interview is willing to reciprocate, if I can have their passwords to every social group I might consider it.

And if I say I dont belong to any, they cant say I am lying, there are none linked to the email address I use on my job applications. So, a search for that email would come up completely unconnected.

Let's see, what am I giving up by handing over EVERY username and password of the sites I use?

My real name, my address, phone numbers, the number, gender and age of my children, full access to my bank accounts, details of my clients, past and present, confidential emails sent between various colleagues, bosses, etc.

None of this is in the public domain and should not be.

Also, there is sensitive, professionally embarrassing and potentially harmful information about my personal life, which has, doesn't and will never have the slightest bearing on my professional life.

I am of the old school, who takes my privacy and anonymity seriously. There is NO trail which can link my CM activities to my personal blog, and no way of linking either to my real identity on Facebook. Because of my active approach to anonymity and identity protection, I enjoy the freedom to say what I like where I like, I have control of who contacts me and my family and I control how much access they have to us.

IrishMyst, I understand where you're coming from. Let me tell you, if you have store loyalty cards, they know FAR more about you than the government do. While you're out the house, you're on CCTV almost constantly, even in small towns...

I don't know if it's the same in the states, but the UK government,although it gathers and stores reams of information on us, has NO way to pool this information to provide one catchall profile of you. You're absolutely right, the state has records of everything you do...they have THOUSANDS of records on everything everyone does. What they don't have is a way of putting it all together.

How can I be sure? Because the powers that be are feudal, disorganised, petty and self-obsessed, which means nobody talks to each other, which means nobody knows the full picture.

There are something like a billion people in the world with internet access. Do I have something to hide from them? FUCK YEAH! I dare one person to put their hand up and say they feel comfortable with a billion people knowing all about them and having full access to every internet account they create.

In fact, if you are, let's have it right here and now: reply to this, in public, with all of your usernames and passwords. You're so secure, you have nothing to hide...prove it!

Oh, and I'm laughing my fucking ass off at the idea of testing applicant's integrity by asking them to volunteer to have their identity stolen and their accounts hacked.
