Seems lazy to me. Here's a novel idea: Go to the Gorean Boards read and learn, or maybe read some of the books and get a grasp on Gorean ideology. (too bad they don't have Cliff's notes, huh?) If i were a Gorean, i wouldn't care to explain anything to you because i would find that offesnsive. Why should anyone validate theiir belief system to you?
Are you an emissary from the BDSM Consulate, do you hold any title of distinction that makes you worthy of such an honor?
i find this entire angle rude and condescending...and perhaps that affected how i approached this thread. (damnit, it's contagious) i'm not a Gorean, and yet i'm totally annoyed by it.

What is the basis for gender-specific dominance?

I'm no Gor expert, but I'll field this one.
The male of our species is, generally, physically superior to the female and tends to have an inherent desire to control the world around him in a way that is not common to the nurturing character of the female.
In short, his character makes him want to dominate, and his physical ability allows him to do so.

Okay, the average male is stronger than the average female. But the evolution of the human mind has rendered any sort of survival of the fittest obsolete. There is no inherent biological desire in men to control, it's a construct of a generally male-dominated society. Personality wise, assertiveness is not a gender-specific trait. There is no inherent, gender-specific dominant or submissive.

But physical strength means next to nothing in western society today. We have a set of laws and societal conduct that extends beyond a pre-historic idea of dominance based on physical strength.

Haven't you realized by now how useless your word and posts are?
Where do you get off criticizing other people when every word you've uttered is absolutely a waste of time?

Beg to differ, Belittled. Tulip made quite a good post right at the top of this page... one that echoed what I was thinking, actually.
Why on earth would anyone feel obligated to validate their belief system to someone so obviously antagonistic and condescending? If someone were to say to me, "I think BDSM and the people that practice it are SICK. I want you to validate how you can be involved in something like that.", I would tell them to F-off simply for the approach they chose to use.

If they asked respectfully, they would probably get their questions answered.

ah ok, you two are together, got it.

you asked for someone to validate gor. ummm... yeah, i can see that happening really soon. i dont get World of Warcraft.. i dont ask people to validate it. i dont get poly relationships, i dont put others down for having them.

you seem to be the one having issues with this topic. yet, you expect men who have risen above what society expects of them (in my opinion) to pause long enough to give you a detailed explnantion of why they are the way they are... and why we girls are the way we are.

if you want to learn, the gorean forum is easy to find. the books are just as easy.

1) It's pretty pointless to ask people to validate their belief system - it simply puts them on the defensive. Try asking them to EXPLAIN why they value their beliefs - and if you listen you may learn something.

2) Lots of value systems look pretty weird from the outside - How can some Hindus be so fatalistic that they drive without thought of road safety? How can Catholics believe that Communion wine literally turns to blood....the point I'm making is that outsiders often have only a superficial understanding of the beliefs, and it's easy to mock.

3) Is a belief system any more valid because it is based on a book written by a committee 1684 years ago or a novelist (I use the term loosely)in the last century? The age of the book doesn't seem important to me.

4) Some people choose books on which to base their philosophy in the belief it was divinely inspired, others simply choose something that fits their existing preconceptions. So if you start with a philosophy that men are innately dominant over women and a book validates those views, it's kinda convenient to run with it even if it was just written as a make blieve story for fun and profit.

Personally, Gor is fine as a way of organising your activities within BDSM - but I suspect some ladies may take exception if you carry those attitudes and values out in to the rest of your life, and that's a bit inevitable. I have a problem with the line about "the Fall of Western Civilization" - unless you are referring to the late Roman Empire, "Western Civilization" - or American culture - seems alive and well and mutating and evolving constantly. It's even matured enough to permit and tolerate wacky cult religions as well as monotheistic Judaeo-Christianity. (I even have my doubts about the "fall of the Roman Empire" - that's another example of mutation into other forms and the persistence of cultures)

Oh yes - for myself, I'm an atheist - stories are just stories, people are what's important, but if you want to join a club and learn a funny handshake, go ahead - as long as you don't assume some moral advantage, tell me there's a right way of doing things or expect me to believe in anything I can't measure.

Agreed. For those who don't know how to use words.
I have a feeling they'd be abused, considering the replies to this topic.

PDV, perhaps you're right, and validate wasn't the right word.

I'm personally a Deist who doesn't prescribe to any belief system although I have a particular fondness for Hinduism (which you mentioned) and buddhism.

But I'll concede to your verbiage and ask that Goreans please explain the belief system, mostly along the lines of gender bias and inherent slavery and submission within.

There have been plenty of words in this topic, many of them forming posts addressing the OP. Choosing to ignore them doesn't make them disappear.

the ones you have chosen to attempt to insult here are very well spoken and have an astounding command of the English language. But there are some posters who just earn an eyeroll.

(I'm definitely not trying to troll as much as this will seem like I am, but whatevs)

Does the whole Gorean philosophy/lifestyle seem to be like a bdsm version of Scientology?

A lifestyle based upon the words of a science fiction author, seemingly ridiculous to any outsider who catches a glimpse of it...

So yeah, am I the only one who has drawn a parallel to the two?

Gor i am not educated about. Scientology I studied in mid 70's and just wasnt for me. Now I am a submissive practing witch, but I would not design my life after the Harry Potter series, however I have enjoyed reading and watching the movies. If someone wants to do so, I would just feel it offers them something that validates their life, and has nothing to do with me.

There is a lot of arrogance in this world, where people are so willing to trash another's beliefs. They profess to have the truisms to life and this arrogance has usually provided a lot of  pain in one form or another to those who did not fit into these truisms. Science fiction can help to stretch the mind of possibilites outside the logical mind. Some people do this naturally, while others do not have a strong abilitiy in it. These authors who put what others cant see into print share a reality that many do not experience, but is this reality really fiction? Be it if it is or not, does not matter nor can it be validated. Answers are not a flat yes or no about the reality of these authors. The same can be suggested in regards to the bible in it's truth or fiction.

With this said, if Gor(remember I do not know anything about it) suggests a way of life that othres want to adapt their life too, so be it. That just meant those books impacted these people to try to life this style. The same for those who live scientology, or Christians, Jews , Pagans and the list goes on. It is the will to live something that is to the person a way of expressing their core, as long as it isn't self-served as a total truism for all people. I do not see neither Gor or Scientology trying to convert everyone to their truths.

Blessed Be

Not a troll huh? Really?

So you read about this thing you speak of? Genuiningly asked questions to try and understand it?

Did you know that sci-fi author is actually a Professor of Philosophy?

If the only place you learned of it is on-line, via chatrooms, websites and second life, then I agree it is pretty ridiculous.

Did you know that the university he taught at was ashamed of him? Wished they had not granted him tenure and felt he lowered the valuation of the school?
