You know, I heard that too... and when he said that he didn't deserve it, I found myself genuinely liking the guy. It was a let down.

But, so be it... bring on whatever's next.

Liberals tend to pat Liberals on the back like this so no, I won't be surprised when the Liberals on the Nobel Committee fail to give W an attaboy for freeing all those millions and millions in Iraq and Afghanistan. They would much rather give it to a fellow Liberal who has done nothing, but this isn't a recent development, why should anyone be surprised.

Indeed. I had no idea that it was possible for somebody to be a Nazi and a Marxist simultaneously, to pick one example of the current American debate.
So what has Obama done that demonstrates his liberal/lefty principles, then? Closed down Gitmo? Withdrawn from Iraq? Repealed the Patriot Act?

Actually 3, maybe 4 depending on how you classify Elihu Root, US conservative politicians have won the prize, which considering that the prize has only been given to 97 people over the course of 108 years isn't too bad. As a matter of fact only 7 US politicians that you would call liberal have won, and of those Marhsall and Hull are included only to forestall any arguments about the matter both were centrists and richly deserving of the Nobel prize.

I believe there are laws governing gifts, amounts, and reporting those. I don't know the specifics or what would apply.

Depending on where our currency is in Dec. the award comes out to around $1.2 million. Yes the anti-Obama folks will be jumping on this one, and probably already are (I am not sure when Rush or Beck come on the air). I personally do like the man, but he is my president. So kudos to him for receiving the award. I don't know what he did to earn it during his first 11 days in office, but it's not my job to make the decision on who receives it. Another cool thing about this year, is that they set a record for the number of folks nominated to receive the award.

Wilson won it while in office, so they can start there.

According to the Nobel folks, they are recognizing his commitment to get people talking again, especially about nuclear arms.

I have a slightly different take. By accepting it and moving on, it's a minor story, one which he himself has said he didn't earn but is honored by. By rejecting it, he opens up a whole can of worms and it becomes a huge story. I like the likening of it to lottery winnings. It's not something earned, but it's nice to get and there really isn't any need to give it back.

I wonder if anyone has ever turned down a Nobel prize before.

Two laureates voluntarily declined the Nobel Prize :

Jean-Paul Sartre, who was awarded the Literature Nobel Prize in 1964
Lê Đức Thọ, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.

Adolf Hitler constrained three laureates not to accept the Nobel Prize; however, they were given their prizes after the Second World War :

Yeah, I suppose you're right. But fortunately, to paraphrase John Travolta in "Michael" - I'm not that kinda liberal.

At any rate, this is an empty, meaningless "award." Like I said earlier, nothing but a door prize. I can't imagine any reason anyone would be excited or significantly proud that he won this. A complete non-issue, in my opinion.

There has been one winner that has turned down the prize. Here is a snip from the www.nobelprize.org:
