White House advisers say Fox News is not news

WASHINGTON – White House advisers pledged on Sunday to book administration officials on Fox News despite claims by the president's inner circle that the cable network is a GOP mouthpiece whose programming "is geared toward making money."

Last week, White House communications director Anita Dunn said Fox News operates "almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party." On Sunday, Rahm Emanuel, President Barack Obama's chief of staff, said, "It is not a news organization so much as it has a perspective."

In response to the criticism, Fox News executive Michael Clemente on Sunday accused the White House of continuing to "declare war on a news organization" rather than focusing on issues such as jobs and health care. "The door remains open and we welcome a discussion about the facts behind the issues," said Clemente, senior vice president of news, in a written statement.

Fox News commentators Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity have been strong Obama critics, and Bill O'Reilly has taken tough looks at the administration. Obama avoided "Fox News Sunday" when he visited five Sunday morning news shows last month; three aides carried the administration's message on Afghanistan, health care and the economy this Sunday to ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC, but not Fox; and a recent White House blog post accused Beck of lying. Beck has called Obama a racist.

Karl Rove, a Fox News contributor and former White House adviser to President George W. Bush, said the Obama administration is trying to demonize Fox News for asking questions officials do not like. He compared Obama's approach to that of President Richard Nixon, who included journalists on an "enemies list."

"This is a White House engaging in its own version of the media enemies list," Rove said on "Fox News Sunday." "And it's unhelpful for the country and undignified for the president of the United States to so do."

Appearing on ABC's "This Week," senior Obama adviser David Axelrod said Fox News shouldn't be treated as a news organization. "And the bigger thing is that other news organizations, like yours, ought not to treat them that way, and we're not going to treat them that way," he said.

The White House dislikes a news outlet that isn't a mouthpiece for it's cause.

Now there's news.

That's true; Fox News isn't news.

What's also true is that Fox absolutely HATES being revealed for what it is really is: a mouthpiece for the reactionary forces of this country. They deliberately churn out childish "opinions" and use juvenile tactics, but they whine when they're not taken seriously!

Still, some people enjoy it, just like some people enjoy greasy burgers made from cows' anuses.

The (useless) debate continues :-) .

I thought this was going to be a nothing little bit of nothing.  They run something up the flagpole to see who salutes, their own side blows raspberry's at it, people of my outlook toss a few tomatoes, the whole thing gets dropped.  It was a bad idea.

Instead we get this

Wow.  I mean, WOW!  ...  I'm just a little stunned that an advisor to the President of the United States said something like that on television.  That is one hell of a statement.  The White House suddenly gets authority to decide which major media outlets are legitimate?  That's not a problem?  Give it a sec before searching out that essential "Bush did "this!" response.  They get to define a news organization under WHAT authority, exactly???

It isn't just a dangerous escalation with Fox that they've decided to go with either.  A threat could very easily be taken from Axelrod's words about what the other networks ought to do.  Almost a whisper of "with us or against us," towards our fellow Americans.  What happens when those other networks realize that half the country don't hang on President Obama's every word, and decide they don't want to cede half the market to the competition?  Or just decide that No, the President doesn't get to run their newsrooms?  Not to mention that hungry young journalists who want to be the next Woodward and Bernstein get a great big hard-on when threatened?  What the fuck are they thinking in this administration???  With all their unresolved crooked comnections and unvetted appointees?  Do they really want to go there!?!?!?!

They could always try to shut Fox down, but that, I'm pretty sure, would lead to a nasty Constitutional crisis.

Kitten, I'm so sorry to say, that your disregard for the freedom of the speech doesn't surprise me at all.  That's a shame.  It's a rare and precious thing.

Childish tactics? You mean like claiming that white right wing racist rednecks thereatening minorities with guns and then editing out the fact that it was a black person lawfully carying a rifle to a protest?

Piss poor and biased reporting is prevalent everywhere. Lame stream meadia.

As a partial aside, "right-wing racist redneck" and "black person" are not necessarily mutually exclusive. It's not a common demographic, but it does exist.

As I'm reading the title on the Youtube clip, "they" would be MSNBC.  You did at least look at the link you quoted in your reply, right?

Yes, but then your previous statement doesn't make as much sense - unless your essential argument is "people that I'm calling part of your side do it too, so you don't have room to criticize".

Well... I'd strongly refute "just as biased", but your fundamental point isn't too wrong.

I'd say MSNBC, like most of the newscorps, is about 60% bullshit at this point, due to corporate meddling. Which is to say: more agenda than truth, at this point.

But Fox is in a league of its own. Fox is at least 90% bullshit. It's got to the point where you can almost reliably decide what to believe based on listening to Fox, and believing the opposite of that. Most news orgs are worse than flipping a coin, but Fox is actually incredibly reliable - it is almost guaranteed to be utterly
wrong.

That depends on the point of view. I view both with contempt.

That's fine; so do I. But please don't use phrases like "just as bad", when they're clearly not.

What the fuck are you talking about, Ialda???  You asked who "they" were, and quoted a link.  The answer was in the link.   What does that possibly have to do with my expression of concern about the White House and their ignorance of how free speech, and freedom of the press play out in this country???

The only possible answer I can see is that you are pumping the bullshit to avoid admitting you snarked on a link w/out at least a peek, and don't like getting called on it.

Pot-kettle-black doesn't work when all you have is pot.
