WM, I believe the two pubs vying for the title of 'Oldest in Britain' are the Trip to Jerusalem ( built into the walls of Nottingham Castle ) and the Old Ferry Inn in Cambridgeshire; although I don't that one should be in the competition because it was a tumbledown wreck with just a couple of walls left standing and somebody built a new place around those walls a few hundred years ago. I personally used to drink in The Royal Standard of England in Forty Green in Bucks but that was a relatively new place, having only been licensed for about 800 years. It was partly built originally from the timbers of an old ship, so it could be a bit older than that. They must have been bloody heroes back when that was built, to drag those damn great timbers up the hill it is built on.

There is one in bolton too, then there is the fighting cocks in stalbans, altho its only had a license as a pub since the 1700s.
My daughter lived in nottingham a couple of years ago, and she liked the Pitcher and Piano, which is an old church transformed into a pub, seems to be a popular thing since I left home.

We had two churches in Brisbane that Peta, the wife of ( that great American Hero) David Hackworth, converted into restaurants and they appeared to be doing very well until they both mysteriously burned down within a short time of each other.

Ox teams to drag large timbers, they handle a hell of a lot more weight than draft horses or people. And when they're too old to work, there's a lot of good eating in them.

Maybe a black metal fan failed to notice that they were no longer churches?

I didnt realise it was a competition..
Balfarg, Scotland: The Balfarg henge is a part of a larger prehistoric ceremonial complex in Fife, Scotland. grooved-ware pottery found at the site dates to around 2900 BC. Some of the vessels may have been used to hold black Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) which is a poison but also a powerful hallucinogen. This discovery is briefly explored in the journal Antiquity in the article ' The use of henbane as a hallucinogen at Neolithic ritual sites: a re-evaluation' (1)

Carrowmore, Ireland. (Site 4) - Dated about 4,600 BC, contains the remains of a passage-tomb which may be the earliest in the country. Such an early date, however, is controversial. This tomb is one of the smallest complete sites in the cemetery and produced the remains of over 65 fragments of antler pins, including seven pieces with mushroom-shaped heads, as well as over 30 kilos of cremated human bone.

Skara Brae, Orkneys: Hallucinogenic Alcohol: 5,000 year old traces of cereal-based fermented alcohol - laced with hemlock and henbanewere discovered near Skara Brae in the Neolithic metropolis of Orkney. (Gourlay, 2001)

However important, alcohol is nowhere near the full story of induced Neolithic consciousness change. In many cultures, psychoactive drugs and their effects are viewed as vehicles for making contact with other worlds, in particular those of the ancestors in the context of temple-centred ceremony. Rudgley (1999, p.137-141) has proposed cannabis and/or opium as likely candidates in the early western Neolithic and a growing body of opinion points in the same direction. (Devereux, 1997: Sherratt, 1997; Thomas, J., 1998) The Orkney brew described above, it will be remembered, was blended with henbane and hemlock. Henbane, bearer of the trance-inducing, hallucinatory (and extremely toxic) drug Hyoscyamine, is one of what Sherratt (1996) terms “the Saturnine herbs”. Sherratt recounts how during the 1980’s henbane was recovered from carbonised Neolithic porridge, eaten from Grooved Ware pottery in the context of a mortuary structure, Balfarg/Balbirnie in Fife, Scotland. Discovery in the 1920's of three burial chambers at the Jersey La Houghe Bie site adds weight to Sherratt's thesis. David Keys reports that the chambers "...contained 21 pottery vessels marked with a burnt, resin-like material. Archaeologists believed that this was from drugs, possibly opium or hashish." (6)

If it is a competition, I think the French have us all beat: they've found traces of henbane and flyagaric at Trois Ferers, haven't they?

We have a pub/club in an old church. Even better, I believe it's now a Gay bar

Our oldest pub still going is only from 1745.

I admit that I have a new project I am starting soon....
I admit I am wondering if WhoreMods would like to come to the states to help me in this endeavor....
I admit that the project is an outdoor project involving 70 meters of special wire, four 4 meter tall steel poles, and a lot of climbing.....

Okay, I could use old telephone poles, just mean digging bigger holes....

I admit K and I have been steadily whittling away at the stuff we need to sell or give away in order to be ready to move into our little house in TN.

I admit I'm getting nervous, the house was supposed to be available by now but isn't. Grrrr .

I admit the little house comes with 2 additional buildings, and one is perfect for me as an art studio, craft room so I don't have to sell my art supplies!!!! I admit, having a dog/kid/dust free dedicated space for oil painting is a dream come true. I'm practically salivating.

I admit K and I turned down two options here in our home town, so I'm extremely worried that this adorable little home with the spectacular view only 5 miles from a 20 mile bike trail is going to slip through our fingers.

No, a dual axis full wave dipole antenna for vhf and uhf radio transmission. Figure you would be the perfect person to climb the poles to hook up the antenna....

He should have known those weren't strong enough for a dragon.

Dragons perching on antennas affect radio transmission and reception, everyone knows that.

Hell too many birds perching on the damn things can have an affect....

A lot more practical, then. I didn't think they let you broadcast UHF stuff over there unless you were an amateur television station, though?
(I doubt my ninja skills would be up to that even if I could make it, sadly.)

I had a squirrel drop dead when he connected a couple of wires around the transformer...

Yep, East TX squirrels are quite dumb.

Cool antenna idea though.

The range you'd get for something that size would be even more impressive than the huge finished thing itself, I suspect.

UHF is allowed for radio transmission for holders of general or higher, since I am going for the extra, I could conceivably transmit analog tv signals, although why I would want to I have no idea.

However, the antenna idea came up when I was looking into low wattage transmissions, less than five watts.

As for cool antenna ideas, I recently downloaded the schematics and instructions for converting a Direct tv or DISH tv dish antenna to a directional tight beam antenna.

I also have the instructions for building a VLA type antenna, but I think having a billboard sized antenna might not be a good idea, the rotatory assembly alone is freaking huge.

As for having WhoreMods climb the poles to attach the wires, can you think of something better to use a Brit for? I mean I would put a couple of mattresses on the ground on the chance he fell (although trampolines might be better, but I think he would fall on purpose if there was a chance for fun...)_
