What does that even mean? Just say it, since this is "thoughts on moderation."

The Irony is that some people are in such a thing and revert back to less than adult behavior...The fact that particular people are backing such things isn't a surprise to me in the slightest.

You completely misunderstood me, because I write like a donkey, so I apologise for being responsible for your not getting what I was saying.

I wasn't promoting "ruffling feathers" for the sake of it; I was saying that it was refreshing to be able to express oneself without having to be as diplomatically minded as if at a conference between Hamas and the Israeli government.

I hope this experiment works out. Policing of ourselves is far more empowering and enjoyable than having a cop pounce down one's throat because of a misperceived comment that is heavy on irony and low on insult (it has happened to me on numerous occasions, and at times the over-moderation was really rather baffling).

What the fuck does that have to do with anything? How grotesquely irrelevant :-) .

Jefff, you're right. I think they've found a pretty good balance. I've seen what really poor moderation can do to a discussion forum - Bondage.com used to have a terrific Politics section, and it's totally useless now. Just the same half dozen posters calling each other assholes in 20 different threads a day. I think Collarme used to swing too far in the other direction, but now they seem to have found a pretty damned good middle ground. I like it, and I hope they let it settle into this range.

Panda, when I first saw this post scroll by, I thought you were talking about CM.

I could go to Politics and Religion right now and find 20 examples of the usual suspects flinging the same tired insults at other, irrespective of the topic. (And yes, it's always necons versus liberals.)

So, what's the difference?

What exactly do you think you'll be able to do that wasn't open to you before?

Is it really what you thought? You seem to be loading a shitload of assumptions there.

I'm not the kind of poster that calls others cunts or anything like that (which is an unfortunate side-effect of moderation lite that I witnessed this past week or so). I'm not that much into insulting; but sometimes, some comments will get my sardonic side to erupt. That sardonic side was heavily pounced on before, much to my chagrin.

I don't want to go into specifics because the posts in question actually were erased. Vaporized. Pouf! It would be rather stupid of me to describe them at length, even on this thread. And I certainly don't feel like indulging in confidence and whispers with you, whom I don't know from Eve, nor Adam .

It's much worse there. Much worse. Many threads, that's literally all there is. Insults. Not even a token effort to actually address the putative topic of the thread. As bad as it often is here, it's nothing like bondage.com. At least here, if you ignore just 2 or 3 of the posters, you can actually follow a discussion, and that's usually not the case there at all.

I'd agree there. I've felt the heat at times myself. Usually from one particular person that took my own personal views and judged me on them.

As for an "experiment"..It's probably more like let's see who really shows their ass while they think nobody is gonna say anything.

These are your boards. We are here to make sure things don't go against the TOS.

I know of at least 2 relatively recent and LONG threads that contained racial slurs. Any reason these weren't moderated?

The TOS is vague about this, but does explicitly state that the site cannot be used for illegal activity. In many of the countries of subscribers to this site, racial (and many other forms of) vilification is illegal.

I believe the TOS comes from U.S.A. law.
But I agree, that racial slurs are just disgusting and wrong.

Alpha did say it's the holidays and not everyone is here.  That said, do you know if anyone generated a report ticket?  I didn't, and I would have if I'd seen what you're mentioning.  I don't exactly have a shitload of patience for that kind of thing.  The scene, outside the Lair, is too frikkin white as it is -- to say nothing about basic decency.

Part of the reality, too, might be that if there's less to enforce, there's less need to assign volunteers to read threads 24/7/365.  There are plenty of other things that might be done to expand the site, that's for sure.  I'm not sure it's a good idea anymore to expect threads to fix themselves.  If you see something contrary to TOS (which to my reading includes the things I mentioned at the beginning of this thread), please use the Report button.  I certainly will anytime I see something I consider a racial slur.

Were the posts reported, Ebony? The mods can't read every thread, and will sometimes miss something like that if no one draws their attention to it.
ETA_ Dang, RM beat me to it.

possibly these were not reported by the users that saw it?
