I constantly see velcro cited as something that was invented during the '60s for the Apollo programme. It was supposedly used to stick astromaut's shoes to the walls in zero gravity.

I take your second point, but there was very little that actually came out of the Apollo programme itself. Most of the actual innovation was from the groundwork done during the Mercury and Gemini programmes, and even most of that has no real applications besides putting satellites in orbit. (Which is very handy, but could have been done a hell of a lot cheaper even then.) I'm also very unsure that icbms (the main end product of the space programme being used for other ends) have done anything to make the world a better place.

And don't even get me started on the ridiculous crap they've wasted time and money on since the '70s. I've yet to see any explanation of how the shuttle was preferable to an unmanned rocket that can reach a much higher orbit.

Thanks. They don't even have velcro from the moonshots, then.

Not Kennedy? He got you into Vietnam, wasted god only knows how much money on NASA and nearly started a nuclear exchange with Russia three times.

No that was Eisenhower.

You'll be saying the chimp was the only President to get into a squabble with Iran, next.

I was in Viet nam when Kennedy was shot and there were only about 15,000 of us there. When I was in Viet nam under Johnson there were 500,000 of us there.

True enough. (I was forgetting that.) He did escalate it massively, though.

Fair points. I tend to think more of the bay of pigs thing and the Cuban missile crisis as far as Kennedy goes, though: I doubt Nixon would have been stupid enough for either of those messes, even in the early '60s.

Kennedy was the one who stopped the Bay of Pigs fiasco. From the first day of his presidency he told the CIA he would hot allow U.S. air support for the Bay of Pigs invasion. The CIA thought they would force him to do it by starting the invasion without air support and then laying the blame on Kennedy. Kennedy refused to be black mailed.

The missile crissis was avoided by Kennedy taking the U.S. ICBMs out of Turkey in exchange for Kruscheve pulling his ICBMs out of Cuba. Curtis LeMay however had 40,000 marines poised off the shores of Cuba totally unaware of Cuba's tactical nukes which would have vaporized all of us at Gitmo as well as the invasion force. He also had three ICBM targeted for DC,Baltimore and NYC.

Being shot through the head does wonders for a President's reputation, doesn't it? If anybody who'd survived their term had been in the oval office for either of those clusterfucks they'd be regarded even worse than Johnson or Eisenhower.
