Jeez the spin is nuts, the GOP and there supporters act like video does not exist.

Sorry, but all those "I'm am American  and support the WAR speeches lose when they do not support the same vote with a different party  But that would be party politics, something Reagen was against

I'll personally dance with glee when liberals are no longer grouped with socialists, fascists (that's a real joke), communists, atheists, et al.

But some on the left are fascists; [:)] Key word is "some", they do exist.

If I had to toss out some more generalizing, I'd say you see more condenscion on the Left, but more holier-than-thou certitude from the Right.

Moonhead -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 3:57:41 PM)

If they're on the left, surely they can't be fascists as that isn't a very leftist approach?

Level -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 4:10:41 PM)

A fascist, to me, is anyone wishing (and willing) to exert undue control over others; historically, it is used, and often correctly, in describing some from the Right.

PETA, some of the Green terrorists, even some of the more mainstream leftists, show no qualms in going overboard in these regards, IMO.

Moonhead -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 4:16:17 PM)

You're entitled to your opinion, and no question that there's a lot of control freaks on the left, but that isn't even close to matching the definition of fascism. It has to be nationalist and hard right as well as authoritarian.
I'm dubious that single issue groups like PETA and the monkeywrenchers are technically part of the left, either. Just because the right wants nothing to do with them, that doesn't mean that the other side does.

housesub4you -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 4:16:39 PM)

Still no answer to facts   check the votes and explain

Level -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 4:25:45 PM)

Moonhead, as a life-long Democrat (albeit one with widely varied opinions), I'd agree that many don't want to claim the whackos like PETA, etc, but I do believe them to be under the Left's tent, just as the world-is-only-6000 years old types are in the Right's.

We all have our redheaded stepchildren (no offense to the beloved Scarlet O'Hair-as)

housesub4you -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 4:40:57 PM)

Yea explain Pat please, or Mr roberts, or hey whats the baby DR killer name???jeez when you deny facts the GOP sounds great

Ahh But as with all things truth comes out.  Do explain war funding for years and pro life..I missed that speech   so it's ok to send people to die for lies and then what????

Thats debatable. What about the corporate state ?

Where did I suggest that there weren't folks on the right that spouted off in a condescending way?

Should I now go and grab quotes from Rachel Maddow? How about Harry Knox?

See where that whole debate goes? It goes nowhere but in a circle deeper and deeper into the mud.

.....well, true you didn't say that no-one on the right is ever condescending, but you did say that you considered the left more condescending than the right....at least on the whole.

Point is, in these ever partisan times, we notice the failures of our ideological opponents more than that of our ideological allies.

All sides are equally capable of condescension. To suggest otherwise is just partisan posturing.

I may not agree with some of the tactics used by these small groups to gain attention for themselves, such as throwing paint on people (long time ago they were doing that), but I also do not consider PETA leftist group nor fascists for that matter. They are not trying to gain control over the government the last time I looked... in fact I do not believe PETA to be a part of any political movement but their own... even if a lot of them consider themselves "Green Party" people. What they advocate is not a part of any political platform, and in my mind part of what makes someone "fascist" is being part of a political movement that seeks to gain control over the government and use governmental power in authoritarian ways

Brain -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 6:46:29 PM)

Max Cleland lost because of despicable right wing smears and lies. Same goes for Dukakis and Kerry. it was nothing to do with “triumphing in the open battle of ideas”. This WP writer has been drinking too much Kool-Aid AND SMOKING CRACK.
“conservatives win elections and policy debates not because they triumph in the open battle of ideas but because they deploy brilliant and sinister campaign tactics.” This IS true.

Every political community includes some members who insist that their side has all the answers and that their adversaries are idiots. But American liberals, to a degree far surpassing conservatives, appear committed to the proposition that their views are correct, self-evident, and based on fact and reason, while conservative positions are not just wrong but illegitimate, ideological and unworthy of serious consideration. Indeed, all the appeals to bipartisanship notwithstanding, President Obama and other leading liberal voices have joined in a chorus of intellectual condescension.

Why are liberals so condescending?

"Liberals (and socialists) favour rationalism. "

That is your charaterization, not Oakeshotts, and it is of course preposterous. Liberalism is based entirely on emotion.

You're only allowed to get away with this kind of presposterous nonsense because liberals are so big hearted and understanding. Little man. Now, shoo. Shoo!

Both sides can be equally frustrating to me. I usually am around more conservative people due to location, and therefore seem to butt head with "why don't we just bomb the shit out of them" type of thought more than liberal stuff. That is until I log onto the CM message board! [:)]

The way I perceive this is thus; it's got nothing to do with left - right, liberal or conservative, political party or anything like that.

There are two basic kinds of people. There are those who are self owners, and are responsible for themselves. They have no interest in controlling the lives or property of others.

Then there are all the rest who, to various degrees, DO think they should control others and their property. They have various motives, the worst being "for your own good" or "for the children" - especially when they really, truly mean that.

Far as I'm concerned, that's it in a nutshell. The brain damaged controllers sneer because they don't own their own lives,  don't understand why they should... and can't accept that anyone else would even want to do so.

Either I totally misread your post, or you're the posterboy for both "irony" and "clueless".

kdsub -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 7:26:34 PM)

Maybe I am naive but I believe most politicians do the best they can to balance their conscience and beliefs against the need for support of their party to be elected and re-elected.

This means they will hold the party line even if they personally don’t agree with the parties stand…UNLESS… it goes against the wishes of their majority voters in their state then they may vote differently.

This leads to the impression of indifference to the opposing parties view.

The only time they can be depended on to vote together is when the country is attacked. But that will only last a short while.

I don’t know if this is good or bad…maybe it is like quick mistakes in genetics that make certain humans stronger…like immunity to the plague. Changes come quicker and one may work dramatically better and advance the country.

Otherwise this abrupt change in government without compromise may be better for the country in the long run…It may make us stronger through pure chance.

It is like gambling ...when you’re lucky you can afford a short bad string of luck. We have been lucky for a long time…I hope the odds don’t catch up with us because of bad changes…like Bush.

"How many textbook examples of market failure do you jackasses have to see before you're willing to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, sometimes a government program that doesn't work exactly as intended is better for the community than a free market that doesn't work exactly as intended?"

How long will it take liberals to understand that without free markets there is nothing but debt behind their treasured government programs?

Jeffff -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 7:36:07 PM)

Yes, the real estate market corrected it self nicely didn't it?

Satire is based on contempt for its subject: there's little that's any more condescending.

Hint 1: "subject" and "audience" are different.
Hint 2: This post is not satire. Not exactly.
