Yeah, that's the real bitch about knife play, if you play with sharp knives, the learning curve is fairly steep. I do a lot of leather working that involves very carefully controlled cutting, and that's helped me develop control of a blade (not to mention my ability to sharpen them...), but everybody who's interested in knife play probably isn't also interested in learning leatherwork. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe that some of us are just 'knife people'. And those of use who are most drawn towards using knives as toys for the most part already have the experience with and respect for blades to play with them in relative safety. I can't even really think of how I would go about teaching the fundamentals of knife play to somebody who's not already a confirmed knife geek. Yeah, 'this is how you hold a knife', safety rules, how to sharpen, how to sanitize are all simple enough, but how do you teach somebody just how hard they can press with a given edge to give sensation without leaving a mark, or just leave a scratch, or to cut through the top two layers of skin without peeling their bottom?
