Aneirin started a post on American TV stating that it permitted Brits to learn a lot about the American people but wondered if the Americans learned anything about the Brits from watching their TV.

I brought up the idea of what do either of them know about Canadian TV, and let's throw in film, music and other cultural exports for fun, and what it says about Canadians so rather than derail that thread, let's have that discussion here :-)

We just got 'Canada's Next Top Model' here in the UK.

It's....interesting.

Just please tell me it's not representative of Canada!!!

I don't know any Canadian TV or films. My uncle is Canadian and he's been a professor of sociology my whole life over at UC Fresno, so, that is all I know about Canada, other than I wanted to defect during the last admin.

Much of our talent went to Hollywood to make TV and films but many have their start in Canadian shows. Some of our talent that moved down south is:

Will Arnett
Dan Aykroyd
John Candy
Jim Carrey
Kim Cattrall
Michael Cera
Emmanuelle Chriqui
Dave Foley
Michael J. Fox
Brendan Fraser
Victor Garber
Phil Hartman
Jill Hennessy
Eugene Levy
Howie Mandel
Rick Moranis
Carrie-Anne Moss
Mike Myers
Sandra Oh
Ellen Page
Anna Paquin
Matthew Perry
Christopher Plummer
Jason Priestley
Keanu Reeves
Ryan Reynolds
Seth Rogen
Will Sasso
William Shatner
Martin Short
Donald Sutherland
Kiefer Sutherland
Fay Wray

Ok I realise I put Keanu Reeves there and he really doesn't qualify as talent but you get my drift ;-)

Beyond Canada's Next Top Model which I have never watched ms bunny, are the following Canadian shows that might have been seen outside of Canada:

- Kids in the Hall
- Billable Hours
- The Newsroom
- Corner Gas
- Little Mosque on the Prairie
- Trailer Park Boys
- Kenny vs Spenny
- Puppets Who Kill
- Clone High
- G-Spot
- Queer As Folk
- Andromeda
- Flashpoint
- Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures
- Durham County
- The Hour
- This Hour Has 22 Minutes
- Royal Canadian Air Farce
- Nikita
- Lexx
- Once A Thief
- Da Vinci's Inquest or Da Vinci's City Hall
- Street Legal
- Traders
- Due South
- The Outer Limits
- Degrassi Junior High or Degrassi The Next Generation
- Bob & Doug
- SCTV
- Anne of Green Gables
- The Beachcombers
- The Littlest Hobo
- King of Kensington
- Fraggle Rock

That was a nice trip down memory lane.

Poor Maggie...

Arcade Fire are good; Nickelback, too. Strapping Young Lad for some thrash metal.

More classics, the Guess Who, April Wine, Triumph, Voivod.

Elisha Cuthbert can take Maggie's place:

Canadian music has always been great...you left out The Band...who were mostly all canadian, oh and Ronnie Hawkins as well...a classic. As for Canadian TV, to be honest I am pretty disapointed by it overall, I can't think of much that I enjoy, other than TVO's Big Ideas (it televises various interesting lectures and readings) and sometimes The Independant Lens on CBC. CBC is also currently running a rather fascinating series on WW2 propaganda on both sides, called Love, Hate, & Propaganda...well worth watching.

As for Canadian movies, those are often really interesting, ones I remember are The Black Robe, Artanajuat (sp?) the Fast Runner , The Decline of the American Empire, Looking for Leonard (not really that good, but I liked it for some unknown reason), The Shipping News (not sure if it counts as Canadian, but it was filmed in Canada), New Waterford Girl (Again, liked it even though its sort of slow and predictable), Passchendaele & one about some white explorers stranded in the far north who are taken in by Inuit starring Jeff Bridges I think.

The talent is here, but generally it ends up going south as soon as they get even a bit of a name...maybe its because nature abhors a vacuum so sucks all our talent across the 48th
