With all due respect to everyone pondering here, it seems to me that the essence of the discussion goes something like this: "Too bad we dont live in an ideal world".

Yes, it is. Too bad that, for example, some gays and lesbians remain closeted because in some instances, to be out outweighs the consequences of being in the closet - or at least discreet. Too bad that we women cannot do some of the same things men often take for granted, because we might put ourselves at risk in doing so. Too bad that one might choose to be silent about one's religious beliefs, for example, being Jewish, because less than a century ago, that could have meant extermination; and that for some of us, it is simply wise to choose carefully to whom we disclose.

We do not live in this ideal world. We can bemoan this fact from here to eternity, and we are in the end, faced with the same choice: How much or how little of ourselves we reveal; and if we do, when do we do this?

Not being "ourselves" has consequences; so does being "ourselves". I agree with Brainiac's points.

Thanks for that, Firebird. I do not think my position demonstrates ego or intolerance, just common sense. Others are entitled to their own opinion, of course.

A perfect world would be a wondrous thing for a time, but old farts like me who are by nature, combative (blame my Norse/Celt blood lines) would find it a tad boring and indeed uninspiring I'm thinking. Mind you, in a perfect world we would have true and fair justice rather than justice being given in many cases to the man with the larger bank balance and/or the bigger gun. Blokes like are more used to seeing the present world as it is and being our own policeman and extracting our justice according to our beliefs, trying to keep from infringing society's rules and regulations to much. Still a couple of heartbeats from being half way through my sixth decade on this rock in the universe I suppose I should think about settling down. Think about it that is not actually doing it.

I would much rather live in a society of fucked up individuals than exist in a fucked up society of socially acceptable stereotypes. At least I know I'm human and that opportunities for love and kindness always exist.

IronBear .. We have always fought each other when there was no one else to fight ... it's norse celt tradition ... it keeps us from takeing over the world ... even with Mead and Scotch. But like  tigreetsa said ... I'd rather be me, than be a robot. (ME HATES PC)

Nothing in my post suggested that I believe we should accept injustice or discrimination based on outdated norms or ignorant stereotypes. In fact, I have argued many times in other threads like this on becoming an activist to right social wrongs. I suspect you are talking about institutional discrimination against transgendered individuals, and I was talking about putting your feet on the table and sucking each others toes at Olive Garden. The first is an example of social injustice, the second is just wrong.

This wasn't intended to oppose anything you posted but to contribute to the thread.

I also believe that freedom without criticism isn't really freedom at all.
