I am thrilled that there are elite scientists on the panel, as it should be. I'm actually thrilled there is finally a panel at all.
I have issues with the Hollywood crowd, yes. They are not scientists, to my knowledge. Nor engineers or other " experts " .
Obama is getting heat about this. The NY Times and Washington Post have been slamming him for his lack of  leadership and action on this disaster. So let's drag in some " big names " and  make it look impressive  That's my take on it. Agree or disagree, that's fine.

As to scoring points off Obama... nope and to be honest with you... I believe insinuating that is an attempt to disqualify my opinion and make it look like sour grapes. Not the case at all. I would be saying the same thing no matter who the President was. It's my opinion, simply that.

However, I did hear that, despite the dangers, Obama plans to leave massive amounts of dihydrogen oxide in the Gulf, even long after the spill is a memory.

How would he go about getting it out?

It'll be a disaster. Hurricanes will bring it ashore, it will get into acid rain, it interferes with highway safety, and while even a few tablespoons would kill you if you breathed it, it can be found in every home and every school, even in children's bodies.

Yet Obama does nothing!

Even now, the waves are pounding it against our beaches.

No, really, how would he get it out?

Evaporation?

realcoolhand -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/2/2010 7:03:43 PM)

Personally, I think he should drink the ocean and piss it out clean.

And if he doesn't, it's only because he's an elitest. And a commie pinko.

Awesome! That's even better than the magic voodoo powder!

I'm emailing the White House right now....

Now, when he does, will he use the "relief" well?

I am sure we will have pages of how " inovative" and "refreshing " Obama's approach is.   He has anything and everything available to him to help resolve this horrendous disaster, and Cameron and Cosner are right up there on the most desirable minds to use ?  If it weren't so sad, it would be laughable.

sorry, but this part of your post says to me that you ARE trying to score points off Obamas abilities and ideas

So... you think that the robotics experts that worked with him (Cameron) on filming The Titantic as well as the other technical experts are just the hollywood elite?

Robotics experts are engineers.
It is a subspecialty of mechanical engineering.

I do not fault you for your ignorance. You simply did not know and had a knee jerk reaction to a lack of information.

Edit to ask:

Why did you think that because they worked in Hollywood they suddenly became less scientific?

maybemaybenot -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/2/2010 7:17:42 PM)

I can't name all the experts, but I can Google it.. and it seems there are lots of " experts " on oil spills. SO I guess there are experts on oil spills. It is simple logic that there is not an expert on spills of this magnitude, since it is the first of it's kind.

Sure if the people qualified to work on an oil spill want to use one of Camerons robots.. give him a call. By all means use it. His exppertise in robotics does not make him an expert or even qualified, imo, to fix this mess.

AS I said, yes BP is suppose to be cleaning it up. How's that working for us ? Do we just sit and wait a decade or two for this to get under control... or if the president sees that BP os failing miserably, does he intervene. And before you answer that... take a nice deep breath.. cuz he is now doing just that by setting up a panel. And I applaud the effort and boo a couple of his choices.

When did I say Obama caused the spill, when did I say BP wasn'r soley responsible for the mess they created and the cost of fixing it ? Obama putting his foot up there ass isn't fixing the problem. And probably why he decided to do something.

Brain -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/2/2010 7:22:16 PM)

You are right to criticize Obama for not doing enough to stop the leak. But I don't agree with criticizing this Hollywood guy just because he makes movies. It makes sense to me that if they can see better what's going on down there it will be easier to fix it.

Unfortunately, this looks like it is more of an opportunity for you to criticize Obama than to consider the matter objectively.

I am disappointed Obama has not used the military. I think they should send some submarines down there if they want to look at it more closely. And they should start using the military to coordinate private sector and public sector resources. I think there are a lot of smart people in the military like engineers and other professionals that could do a great deal to solve this problem.

Ooooops, my misake, your are correct robotics guys are engineers. Silly me.

Not to sound ignorant or anything... but can you splain to me why they didn't ask the engineers, you know the robics ones, to be on the panel ? If they needs robotic help, why call the Director when you could have the actual engineer ?

The military is no better equipped to plug this leak than a military submarine is to view it. Absolutely no offense intended, but it has to be said.

This makes it sound as if this is the first time the administration has consulted any experts. Do you know if that's the case?

quote:

I have issues with the Hollywood crowd, yes. They are not scientists, to my knowledge. Nor engineers or other " experts " .

Two (Cameron and Costner) is a pretty small "crowd."

No, they're not scientists. But the panel organizers thought Cameron might have useful expertise based on his experience with deep-sea filming and ROVs. Is it really so awful to hear him out?

According to your own link, Costner "funded Louisiana-based Ocean Therapy Solutions to develop centrifuges that can rapidly separate oil from contaminated seawater." That technology sounds directly relevant to cleaning up this horrific mess. Is it such a terrible idea to test it out?

Interesting theory, but does the evidence support it? Did the administration issue press releases about how they were listening to James Cameron? Was there a press event to unveil the "big names"?

Let's agree to disagree.

I respect your right to your opinion and wasn't trying to "disqualify" you. Indeed, I phrased that part of my post as a question. I was simply trying to come up with a theory for why your reaction seemed so much more intense than the situation seemed to warrant.

maybemaybenot -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/2/2010 7:44:27 PM)

Just to lighten it up a little :

Now here is some one who should be on the panel !! Very interesting take :

LadyCimarron -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/2/2010 7:59:16 PM)

the submarines are not a bad idea but they may not know how well they will work under these conditions. That may be the battle cry for this whole disaster. We don't know what the real effect of these particular conditions are and most humans are not going to want to be the guinea pigs to find out. Also some people don't realize that when they say oil, they mean crude oil. Not the stuff we put in our cars but a thick nasty toxic sludge that may be difficult to see through if they do get a sub down there. But at this point its worth a try. We should try any logical solution that might help this.

Lucylastic -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/2/2010 8:09:33 PM)

I watched a documentary recently regarding some of the stuff that Cameron has been getting into regarding oceanic depth tech, that his pioneering work is helping in diving into some of the deepest trenches and depths of the ocean, ..so far we know less about it than we do the moon.
He also wrote an article about his "Drive to Discover" way back in 2004 interesting stuff

And that's probably a pretty good reason he is not being asked to "fix this mess" - he is only being asked to, as you say, share his ideas and experiences with underwater robotics. So what exactly are you so upset about?

Problem is it's not the first of it's kind.  There was another deep water blow out just last year.  Same result though, it leaked for a few months until the relief well was drilled.

Problem is no one said, wait a minute if we're going to open up these new leases do we have a better plan than that if something goes wrong?
