Thanks for the link. That was an excellent read. While reading it I couldn't help but wonder why people think that if you work in hollywood you could not possibly be an intellectual.

I watched a documentary recently regarding some of the stuff that Cameron has been getting into regarding oceanic depth tech, that his pioneering work is helping in diving into some of the deepest trenches and depths of the ocean, ..so far we know less about it than we do the moon.
He also wrote an article about his "Drive to Discover" way back in 2004 interesting stuff

Good article, Lucy. Thanx for sharing. [:D]

Not Ghostbusters, but close.

WASHINGTON — It’s official: The Gulf oil spill is a titanic mess.
The Obama administration yesterday called in Hollywood director James Cameron, of “Titanic” and “Avatar” fame, to help fix the massive gusher fouling the Gulf of Mexico.

Unfuckingbelieveable !  In as much as Bush fucked up the Katrina mess, I would have loved to have seen the reaction if he had called on Hollywood actors and directors to be " experts ". I didn't think a disaster could have been handled any worse than Katrina. I was wrong.

I am sure we will have pages of how " inovative" and "refreshing " Obama's approach is.   He has anything and everything available to him to help resolve this horrendous disaster, and Cameron and Cosner are right up there on the most desirable minds to use ?  If it weren't so sad, it would be laughable.

Unbelievable!!! And not unbelievable that the "usual suspects" think this is a good idea!
Hey! Why not call in.....SUPERMAN?
Obama said he's in charge and all he wants to do is have Holder sue B.P.! More "lawsuits!" Suuuuure,...that'll stop the oil from gushing!
This adjunct professor is WAY out of his league in the White House and it's becomming very obvious.
Hey, how about calling in some Hatian witch doctors to put some boujou on it!
"Hollywood", unfuckingbelievable! They must have felt so neglected during the Bush years, no orgies in the W.H.?
Yeah, we wouldn't want anyone messing around with that wellhead who might have some experience in Mechanical ENGINEERING!

You mean like Cato Kalin? His lawyer told him to wear glasses so he'd, "look smart."
Hollywood is all about "sizzle" not "steak."
Sure, lets get some "special effects" people down there to do some fake explosions! That'll help!
And if I need an operation I want none other than "House's" Hugh Laurie doing my surgery!

How about Danica Mckellar? She is an actress AND she is a mathmatical genius who created and proved her own theorem. No, not  everyone in hollywood is a genius, but not everyone is a dummy either. If they are smart and have something to contribute, use them.

Lady Cimarron, if your're going to be talking about brain power "Hollywood" is *probably* not a good source.
For every "Danica Mc Kellar" there's a few thousand "Ashley Cutchlys". ("where's my car dude!")
The national high school dropout rate is probably in the 40-50 %'s, it's *considerably* higher in S. Calif.
At one of those "Star parties" if George Bush were to walk in he'd be the "genious" there! Scary!
I saw a list of actors a few years ago and most of them didn't graduate high school. I didn't say "everyone" in Hollywood, just most of them. Sure, someone with high intelligence and good looks will sneak through once in a while.
And no, I wouldn't want Danica Mc Kellar doing my surgery either.

Then it stands to reason that we should not solicit help from the ones who dropped out of school. But if we have some who are a geniuses, we should not reject them just because they live and work in Hollywood. Use the ones who have knowledge and expertise that could be beneficial. Reject the ones who don't. Simple logic and best for us in the long run.

There are many degreed people in Hollywood who don't have to look smart.
But among the currently very smart:
Natalie Portman is smart, as are Dolph Lundgren and Kate Beckinsale.
Asia Carrera is a renaissanse woman ...who does porn.

Going back a few years the one that always impressed me was Heddy Lamarr.

This isn't a math problem it's an engineering problem and Danica Mc Kellar nor President Obama can do anything about it.
And if you're looking for "brain power" wouldn't "Hollywood" be like,....not on the list?
How about,......oh.... I dunno,.....Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in Cambridge, Mass?

15 years ago Kevin Costner bought technology from the military and did the research and development of technology to clean up oil spills.  Who else was doing this? Not the gov't, not BP and not most of the scientists they called on. A HOLLYWOOD ACTOR. James Cameron likewise developed technology to enhance deep see exploration. Who else has done it? Its not as if they opened the door to everyone in hollywood. They asked 2 people who had did work in this area to attend meetings and share whatever knowlege they might be able to add. It would be foolish of us to not use this technology just because someone in Hollywood thought of it first.

and BTW- Ashton Kutcher studied biochemical engineering at the University of Iowa. He was hoping to find a cure for his brother's heart problem. It doesn't help in this case but it shows he is no dummy.

The experts are the ones down there now unable to plug the leak.  We already know what the experts can do - not shit. The experts need help. At least Costner spent his own money investing in innovative ways to clean up oil spills. Tell me what BP has done.

What the "experts" have been doing for three weeks is lying about how much oil is leaking.
What the "experts" have been doing for three weeks is lying about how it happened.
What the "experts have been doing for three weeks is lying about the impact on the environment.
What the "experts" have been doing for three weeks is lying to reduce any liability for their actions.

Ahh! It's Thompson! "The most interesting man in the world!" "He's show his feminine side,...if he had one!"
Thompson, and what would your solution to this spill be?

Lady Cimarron, Thompson knows everything!

LadyCimarron -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/3/2010 6:29:13 PM)

I totally agree. The last thing we need is more "experts." Send some people from outside of the field. And more importantly some people who do NOT work for BP.

Be aware that one does not need to know much to know more than my little pimp.
Do not let his "white shoe" sales tactics underwhelm you.
I am still the same ol arrogant asshole who seldom opens his mouth until he is sure he has something to say.
I seldom sweat the petty stuff and always try to take time to pet the sweaty stuff.

LadyCimarron, I missed your post, ...I have a lot of respect for Cameron, whilst he is "hollywood" He has used his wealth and his passion to really do something worthwhile with his money in the name of deep sea exploration, we know so little about whats all around us, and thanks to his "passion" he has helped advance our knowledge of the world.
So I was glad to share :)
Also welcome to the boards

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/4/2010 8:14:10 AM)

There is an obvious solution but no obvious solution that helps the company salvage some of the oil to offset the cost of the solution.

This is probably the problem or my cynical view.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/4/2010 8:36:47 AM)

Salvaging the oil is so far down on their list of priorities it isn't even on the list. There is absolutely no higher priority for BP than to shut that thing off, as quickly and as completely as possible, and there is no viable solution that they would not try if it seemed as though it had even a miniscule chance of working. If they could plug that leak by stuffing their wives and children down the hole, they'd probably be doing that.
