Marini -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/4/2010 11:14:10 PM)

At the end of the day, what if the oil leak does actually last for months?
I can fathom months, I can't fathom "years", but I think Professor Kaku, sounds like he knows

what he is talking about.

Unlike many others, I have NEVER fully trusted "the man" to tell me the truth, Professor Kaku does give us food for thought.

I think it might work....

The amazing thing will be when every single household in the U.S. is tuned in to watch the live feed featuring our All American Hero Kevin Costner decked out in a Stars and stripes wet suit, waving his cowboy hat as he rides the bomb down towards the spill.

God Bless all things Kevin Costner. I think it might just work....

I have heard some fairly significant chatter about a probable Christmas 2010 release date for The Postman II.

Difference between Obama and Bush: Bush woke up every morning for a week before Katrina, saw that a hurricane was headed toward the city, and thought "heh, I can deal with that tomorrow." Obama woke up one morning and the Gulf was full of oil.

You Lie, just like Obama. Begining a week before Katrina came ashore Bush and the National Hurricane Center repeatedly warned New Orleans' Mayor Nagan and Luisianna Governor Blanco to initiate their respective disaster plans, and Bush specifically recommended an immediate mandatory evacuation of New Orleans at least 3 days before Katrina hit. Obama woke up 30+ days before the Gulf was full of oil, rolled over, and went back to sleep.

Thurs., March. 2, 2006
WASHINGTON - In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New Orleans’ Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage.

Bush didn’t ask a single question during the final briefing before Katrina struck on Aug. 29, but he assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: “We are fully prepared.”

Stupid RacerJim.....Revisionistic history courtesy of an idiot.

Director of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff "told Meet the Press's Tim Russert on Sunday, September 4, 2005, that one reason for the delay in getting federal aid to Katrina victims was that 'everyone' thought the crisis had passed when the storm left:

"I remember on Tuesday morning picking up newspapers and I saw headlines, 'New Orleans Dodged The Bullet,' because if you recall the storm moved to the east and then continued on and appeared to pass with considerable damage but nothing worse. It was on Tuesday that the levee--may have been overnight Monday to Tuesday--that the levee started to break," Chertoff told Russert."

The USCG was there within hours of the explosion and filmed the rig sink. The feds have been there from the beginning. How many days was it before help arrived after Katrina?

Cons are just upset because no one is blaming Obama for this huge huge disaster. If there was TV footage of bodies floating face down for days with no help sent, then Obama might be taken to task,as bush was.

But there isn`t and Obama hasn`t.

The hot-head section of the GOP are absolutely besides themselves that they can`t use this to club Obama with. But then they`d have to earn their money and defend the BPs of the world.

Well, there's good news and bad news, Marini.

The bad news is, it will last for months. Many months. Best case scenario is that the first of the two relief wells will be ready by early August, but that's not likely. We're into the hurricane season already, it's predicted to be a very bad one, and they need to shut down the drilling and pull the ships off the site when a major hurricane threatens. Then they need to wait out the storm, haul everything back out, and start over, and try to get as much drilling in as possible before the next hurricane. A major hurricane can delay the relief wells by as much as a week or so, maybe as long as a month if any equipment is damaged. It could easily be early September before the first relief well is even ready.

Then there's the question of how long it takes for the relief well to actually hit the borehole at 15,000 feet below the seafloor. Some people I know in the industry say they won't really be surprised if they get it on the first shot, but most of them think they may need at least 4 or 5 attempts to nail it. Probably a week for each re-do, so let's say another month.

So, mid-September is probably the earliest realistic date we can expect this leak to be stopped, and possibly a little or even a lot longer than that. It could be December, but I think that would be the outside. 3 or 4 months from  now is a reasonable expectation, barring any more fuckups or acts of god.

The good news is, no - Kaku doesn't know what he's talking about. There's a reason that petroleum engineers don't do television interviews about physics stories, and it's the same reason physicists shouldn't do television interviews about oil spills. I'm surprised Kaku didn't know better than to shoot his mouth off like that, because his speculation that the relief wells will not work was very uninformed, needlessly sensational, and irresponsibly inaccurate. He should stick to what he knows.

The relief wells will work; there's no serious debate about that. This is proven and relatively simple technology. Nobody in  the industry doubts this, and Kaku should be ashamed of himself for feeding this silly media frenzy. They may not work immediately, and it may take weeks or even a month or two to hit their target, but they will work, and the leak will not continue for years.

I heard somewhere that in Canada, those Socialist shmucks, they require the drilling of relief wells prior to extraction.

I think we should require that here too.

Damn. And here I thought voodoo priests had psychic powers.

Day this hits, people started threads about him sending in SWAT teams and Navy ships, insisting this was a terrorist attack. Now people are claiming he didn't do anything.

Reality shifts rapidly in a world with pre-drawn conclusions.

There was me thinking it was only the US(country wise) that didnt have those regulations in place....
but shush, mustnt talk about deregulating the oil companies....blasphemy

You may be able to get away with crap like that on a polar bear, but it would never work with pandas. We're very alert.

You would require special*fun* handling, but I would torment the hell out of you

Sure. As long as I get free health care afterward, I'm down with just about anything!

Marini -> RE: BP Oil Spill : Who's Obama gonna call ? (6/6/2010 9:19:23 PM)

If it takes "months" to stop this oil spill, that is still far too long,
IMHO, Panda.

How did we go from thinking we could stop the spill a few weeks ago, to
thinking it would take months?
I never got the memo on that.

If it takes over 6 months, than Professor Kaku doesn't seem that far off to me.

3-6 months is a hellified way too long period for this oil spill to continue.

Well...  maybe, maybe not, Maybemaybenot. (God, I love doing that!) You said you'd eat your words when Cameron and Costner played a pivotal role. So far, only Costner is doing anything significant. You're not on the hook yet, lady!

Thanx Lucy ! I'll go heavy on the Mrs. Dash.[;)]

Panda: Nice try and thank you. You're technically correct, but we all know my inference in this thread was anyone from Hollywood was " unfit " to contribute to the clean up.
