Well at least you are honest enough to admit that.

Simple question. Is the above statement racist or not?

Hugely funny. I love Bill Maher, and one sentence out of the context of the monologue ..... why? Seems a bit misleading. Anyway it was said by Bill Maher during a rant against BP, and as a liberal and an Obama supporter, I thought it was fucking funny, and appropriate.

Bill Maher also said that Obama could black it up just a little, like maybe put a shark tank in the White House. Context is important, but so is the source. Somehow, it would be less funny if Beck or Limbaugh said it, even if the "racist" accusation was debatable.

Yes I am aware, I saw that as well, I just don't equate Bill Maher with Glenn Beck. Beck has a show on Faux Noise where he pretends to be a journalist. Maher is a political satirist, not a writer for The National Review. Beck and Limbaugh have, in actuality, said far more racist comments and meant them. Therein lies the rub.

Not necessarily racist. Its mostly stereotyping. A white man can bust a cap in BP's ass just as well as a black one. [:)]

Hey! Come on LadyC., so can a white chick. [;)]. I should have stock in Ruger and S&W.

Moonhead -> RE: Is this a racist comment? (6/3/2010 8:07:47 AM)

Isn't Ruger an Italian company? Stick to S&W or Colt.

domiguy -> RE: Is this a racist comment? (6/3/2010 8:08:11 AM)

Dumb thread....Republican tea bagger "leaders" are usually saying their racist shit to resonate with their racist constituents.

I think OP's point (to the extent that he actually had one) is that stereotyping of that sort is a bit racist?

If that is the OP's point, I would have to disagree. Simply because ALL comedians stereotype. stereotyping is one of the foundations of good comedy. You observe something about life and then stereotype it in an amusing way and since its a situation most people have seen or can relate to, its funny. The best comdians are able to do this without being one bit  racist. That why the redneck comedy tour was such a success.

well you just posted the exact problem we have today with the court system.

It not a question of whether it IS a racist comment or not, it is a question of can it be construed as a racist comment and how much power is pushing it along. (Intent not withstanding)

I am sure however you can find a court who is more than willing to set precedent on the matter.

in addition take terrorism as an example....

the root meaning is "to frighten"

So we not have laws against frightening...  Oh I know how everyone interprets it, that some sob blows something up which is sue-able as many different crimes without the label terrorism.

Use of the words terrorism only serve to put a iron fist grip on people with no exacting crime attached to it.   A catch all like driving to fast for conditions rather than listing the exact nature of the event.

Hence placing the real you into a fictional scenario as surety for the fiction.

Probly does not make sense to most but welcome to law and leegoe land.

ATTORN [e-'tern] Anglo-French a turner to transfer (allegiance of a tenant to another lord), from Old French atorner to turn (to), arrange, from a- to + torner to turn: to agree to be the tenant of a new landlord or owner of the same property. Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Law ©1996.

ATTORN, v.i. [L. ad and torno.] In the feudal law, to turn, or transfer homage and service from one lord to another. This is the act of feudatories, vassels or tenants, upon the alienation of the estate.-Webster's 1828 Dictionary.

Actually I wasn't disagreeing with you. I love Bill Maher, too. Maher is more than just a satirist, but also an outspoken advocate for minorities and the poor. When Maher speaks of Obama's blackness - or lack thereof - we understand his intent. We also understand Limbaugh's and Beck's intent, which is why their attempts at racial "humor" are more offensive than funny.
