These are the types of servers i really love. I love when i can be talking and blink and my glass is refilled and i didn't even realize they had done so. I love when you can continue a conversation while they put the food in front of you with sides of whispered thank yous.

barely

barely, have you ever gone out to dinner at an actual restaurant where they cook the food?

Did you never have questions about the cuisine or the specials or how the food might be prepared? never asked for input form the server as to recommendations or perhaps a wine pairing?

Enjoy your meal at Long John Silvers. You really should never be allowed to eat anywhere else.

arches an eyebrow so you attack me personally juliaoceania lol. But i am not surprised that along comes the peanut gallery as she always does to run in and do the same thing. How does that work for both of you.

grins, do you really think i typed that thinking people would LIKE it - i was a wait staff person once and i didn't have the attitude MOST people here seem to have and i am glad i didn't. I was appreciative of my tips, i worked damn hard for them, and i was good at getting them. However, i never EXPECTED a tip or felt i was OWED one. I worked hard for the tips i got. So my disgust comes from knowledge of what it is to be a wait staff person. I had one man who came in and sat at one of my tables EVERY TIME I WORKED (he knew my schedule) and he NEVER tipped me and he would sit there MY WHOLE SHIFT. But i worked the same with him that i did with everyone else, i enjoyed him. After about a year of him doing this he came in one night and gave me a diamond tennis bracelet. He kissed my cheek and said thank you for making his year in our town very pleasurable and told me to make sure i got that insured. It was valued at over $10,000. So maybe someone can't pay that day or maybe they needed a break from their day to day drivel and wanted to simply be served a nice meal, people are generally good people and if your service is good something will come out of serving them, if not simply giving some people who are maybe down on their luck a nice hour or so for dinner.

However, if you remotely take what's been said in this thread by people (people fucking with food, saying poorer peoples shouldn't go out, that customers OWE the servers something and aren't disgusted with the whole lot of it, then you are a better person than i). If that makes me a bad person that i don't think wait staff should fuck with food, or have an attitude they DON'T project to the customers because they know the customers would say fuck you, or i think people should eat out when they wish, then so be it lol i am a bitch and my disgust in the attitudes i am seeing is simply me. Yeah, you think that if it makes you feel better.

I never said not tipping wasn't TACKY. I did say if you are that good at what you do, you could afford probably a table that doesn't tip you. I said the idea that people are saying poorer people should just stay home is wrong and to me that attitude is TACKY also.

How tacky, indeed.

It's a fact of life that waiters and waitresses are expected to make some of their pay from tips, whether one agrees with that arrangement or not.  If you just arrived from the Planet Zarkon, you can be forgiven for not knowing.  Otherwise, you're knowingly, deliberately cheating the person who served you. Since the vast majority of waiters and waitresses are not rich, you're taking money from people who really need every dollar they earn.

To rationalize that cheating by saying it "evens out" because others, in your estimation, "overtipped", meaning they didn't cheat anyone for services rendered, is just sleazy, and no one's fooled.

are you going to tip the bartender?

How can you afford a Jack and Coke? Jack is palatable but I kind of figured your type of whiskey would come out of a plastic bottle.

If you are so disgusted with the norms of society well by all means excuse yourself and be a tacky twit who doesn't tip service staff. If you are so disgusted with the idea of tipping those in the service industry (not just wait staff) then by all means dont use their services.

There are things, this one of them that are the accepted norms of society, although you are not bound to hold to those norms dont be suprised at the image such actions paint of you. Personally I am disgusted with your attitude towards service providers and what they do.

I don't see where angel once said she didn't tip, in fact I believe she said she does indeed tip, she like MANY believe wait staffers are not DUE a tip just because, but they need to earn their money.   Great service = great tips; lousy service = lousy tips.   I don't see that being a difficult concept.   Why shouldn't wait staff have to earn their money?

In many ways they are in sales, their commission is tips.  I get ZERO salary, I am in a 100% commissions job.   I earn a percentage of what I sell.  If I don't sell, if I do a lousy job in customer service and I lose a client, I lose commission.  Hell in this economy even doing everything right doesn't mean anything, you STILL lose clients, and  you STILL lose commission.  It happens.

Here's a tip for those who like to tip their wait staff. I once did a summer internship at the IRS (don't shoot me.. I wasn't paid!) Put an 8% tip on your credit card and the other 10 or 12% or whatever you are going to leave as a total % in cash. When the IRS audits, they look at the average of credit card tips and reasonably assume that cash tips are also around that averge and will base the tax on the over-all average. Many eating establishments have an 8% tax on sales (sans sales tax to the customer) to determine tip tax rates as an agreement with the IRS.

For wait staffers: Of course, servers should honestly and accurately report all their tips but if your tips on sales is really 5% and not the 8% which was taxed to you, you are entitled to a refund so keep good tip logs. IF you are entitled to a refund (and you are if you were over taxed) and you are not getting that refund, get a new accountant. Also, keep records on tip outs as well along with the name of the server/s with whom you shared tips. Accurate records are beloved by IRS auditors and despite their reputation to the contrary, they really aren't out to get you. They pay taxes, too and quite a few of them are simple shlubs working seasonly to bring home some extra bacon to help feed their family's or pay for their books next quarter. Reporting zero cash tips when credit card tips are at 20% has a much higher chance of getting flagged (and audited) than reporting 7% cash tips when your credit card tips are 8 or 9%.

I usually tip my waitresses no more than thirty degrees, less if I'm tipping them forward especially if they're bosomy, as that makes them prone to fall over.

If you didn't "expect" tips, why would you take a job that pays $2.50/hr?

I'm not talking about an exceptional customer here and there who stiffs you. I'm talking about a general and basic expectation in the restaurant business. Anyone who takes a job as a waiter/waitress *expects* tips.

Listening to all the X servers and their comments reminded me that my mother many years ago was also a server. She is hell on wheels about service always comparing how she used to do it.

One day I took my mother out to dinner. The service was terrible but it was crowded so we were still going to leave a 15% tip. When it came time to pay the bill it came to $32 or so. I gave the waitress two twenties and we waited for our change… It never came and we could not get her attention.

Finally we got the supervisor to chase her down and she stomped to our table and slapped down the change without saying a word. My mother silently picked up the change… reached into her purse and took out 2 pennies and placed them on the table.

As we were walking through the restaurant to the door the waitress ran up to my mom and said” here take your two cents.” My mother smiled, took the 2 pennies, and in a strong voice said” you’re right you aren’t worth two cents now get out of my way”.

I love her.

Hey, it has been a decade since I waited on a table. I tried to do the best I could to be the best server possible, not based on who was sitting at the table, but because it was my job... my tips flowed from that attitude. I also made it my business to know what other customers liked as far as wine and food... made recommendations based upon this experience. If you were a server at a GOOD restaurant ( I had the privilege of doing this work at some nicer establishments) it is a SKILLED job that requires knowledge. Hell, I went to wine tasting seminars, etc, to be a more skilled server, and it helped my tips immensely. I EXPECTED to be paid for that knowledge, and if that makes me somehow "disgusting" I suppose others with specialized knowledge are "disgusting" for wanting to be paid for what they know too.

It is the hardest job I ever had.... it is seriously skilled labor

Good for your mom!

When customers give me more than the bill, unless they tell me specifically to keep the change it goes straight back to them.

As far as expectations about tipping, of course i expect to get a tip if my service is swiftly, accurate and friendly. Another busy night. A table of 4 ladies had to wait a bit longer than usual. Not my standard, but i had 10 other tables. They had drinks, appetizers, and entrees. Deserts were on me for their patience and understanding. All along during their wait they kept saying.... you are slammed, we understand, take your time.

We know when our service is not the best. We are also known to give free drinks, deserts, appetizers, even sushi when such times occur. But, you can bet your sweet ass that if a customer is so inconsiderate as to make my life hell while im trying to do my best with a bad situation, he/she wont get squat.

I will ask if the food is prepared properly. I will wait patiently while you finish your joke, phone call, yawn, ect to ascertain if you desire another glass of wine. I will not take your order if you, or anyone in your party, is on a cell phone/gone to the bathroom/outside smoking/ect. All throughout Pittsburgh, i see signs in shops stating if you are on your cell phone, you will not get service.

The owners of my restaurant and wonderful people. One is the head chef. One has three other restaurants and comes in on sundays to expo. One is there daily, today he was bussing tables and running food through a rush. It always amazes me how people believe that the owners dont know whats going on behind the scenes. Talking to them about the time you waited while they watched the server you had get thriple sat with 14 covers... ummm... yeah... he will listen. He will also realize the need for more servers. And thats about it.

Wow, what a thread.  My thoughts:

Factors in choosing a restaurant - ambiance, type of food and yumminess of food, service, budget, purpose (grab a quick bite before a movie or a nice evening out with a friend, etc.).  I don't go out to eat a lot, namely because I'm on a weight loss plan and dinners out don't factor in very well.

However, I will tip about 20% - more for great service, slightly less for mediocre service, much less for really bad service.  I spent years waiting tables in my earlier days.  I know what a bad day of service is, and I knew when to expect a crappy tip.  It came with the territory.  I also knew when I gave exceptional service, and my overall tips for the night reflected that.

When I worked in a restaurant, I served and I also was their bookkeeper.  Orders were computerized and End of Day reports were run to calculate the amount of food and beverage sold, per waiter, per day.  A percentage of that was reported to the IRS and payroll taxes were removed from the server's check.  Had nothing to do with what anyone personally reported, or credit card slips.  It had to do with what each waiter's sales were for the day.  At the end of my shift, a portion of my tips went to my busser, my bartender, and the kitchen "expediter" (the guy who put all the garnish on the plates and assembled the plates on the tray to be delivered).

I made minimum wage because in this state anyway (California), it is a known fact that wait staff lives off tips.  Just like car salesmen live off commission.  It is a well known fact that those in the service industry receive tips.  I don't find myself going to 5 star restaurants much because it's not in my budget to tip the maitre'de, valet, bartender and food server.  I do, however, periodically frequent a few medium end places and I tip them quite well.

I'm not really sure what this adds to the conversation, but here you have it.
