I know your kind and you balk at tipping. In a past life you lived in Georgia and had servants and knew the way to treat them too didntcha?

Come to my restaurant so I can laugh at your cheap little ass trying to have a scene out of a movie or something where the help is invisible and you have a conversation while they serve you. I love it. And then leave me a crappy tip. I laugh hahahahaha.

And this is the complete assholishness that servers have to put up with. And don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about because I have actually owned a restaurant, as a chef/owner, and I've seen it all.

The server was right. Your mother wasn't worth two cents. Anyone who can sit and watch a server being run out of her shoes fetching water and tea and napkins and what-all, and still trying to get the meals to the table hot, on time, and in the proper order, and who still gets stiffed by worthless self-righteous cunts like your mother, Butchie-boy, well, you all really should not go out in Public.

Duh. You couldn't get her attention because she was dealing with 4 other tables, and it was the Manager's fault that there wasn't enough staffing, not your server. But you took it out on the server because it made you and your Mammy feel like really big people. Well, fuck you. Stick with McDonalds. You aren't fit to be seen in a real restaurant.

It would never occur to me to give any less than my best. I would never countenance any of my servers do anything to a dish I had prepared. If I had ever seen anything like what "youngsubgeoff" alludes to, happen in my restaurant,. I think this shows some paranoia that people worry about this....lol

I did see many disgusting things happen in kitchens I worked in.... rats, roaches, and inept staff that would do stupid shit like cut salad stuff on bloody cutting boards.... but even this was not common. Every place I ever worked I thought of it as a collective responsibility to insure food safety by glancing at fridge temps, calling others on unsafe practices and reporting pests to management....

There have definitely been some interesting remarks thus far. I spent a lot of time dining out as a child and continued that as an adult. Living in a restaurant district has allowed me to see the variances in service throughout the day, which can change and can be sharply different as the week wears on. While I can't speak for others I know myself quite well. I'm aware of the environments I prefer to dine in, crowd size, service, food quality, and all the rest. When your tastes are particular or you're very exacting in what you prefer in terms of service and such, it would behoove you to place yourself in environments where those things are likely to fall according to your preferences.

In terms of not leaving a tip? Never. If I have an issue with service or anything related to the dining experience I will speak with the server and the manager. I prefer to give them a chance to provide feedback and will address the subject with their superior if it is a situation that's clearly out of their hands. All establishments have days when things are very busy and that will impact the service provided. It wouldn't matter if it was a three or five star eatery, it happens. My standard tip is twenty-percent or greater. Dining experiences that provide exceptional experiences are well compensated and communicated to the establishment owner. For some service is a right, others a privilege, and a relative few something they appreciate and do enjoy without pretension and unrealistic expectations.

When I was in the habit of eating out- be it- at hoagi shops or cheaper type of places. They tend to let the food sit out- the next day- the loose bowel thing.

In some ways that is not worth it.

And for the record- I never eat at McDonalds- EVER.

Wow! You honestly are advocating a server stealing a tip? Or were you there and watching the entire thing? No, that can not be it, or you would have realized it was his mom that made the remark about not being worth 2 cents, not the server.

I was not there, so I will take Butch's story at face value. I would have probably done the same thing his mom did, although I doubt I would have bothered to leave 2 pennies.

Your reply to him though, the attack towards his mom, is the most asshole-ish thing I have ever read on this site. And that is saying a lot.

First, I should note that I tend to over tip habitually... but I do have a question no one has been able to answer for me.

The argument for not stiffing a waiter/waitress is that they work for less than minimum wage, and the tips are to make up for that. So... why exactly is what they should get/expect based on how much the food costs?

For instance, here in Wisconsin minimum wage for wait staff is 2.35. So if I go to dinner with five friends, spend an hour there, assume we're her only table, and leave a twenty dollar tip on a three hundred dollar bill... why would that be cheap? For that hour she made 22.35- which isn't bad, really.

It's not something I do, or plan to start doing... I'm just curious if there's a flaw in my line of thought.

Typically, the size of the bill gives some indication of how much work the server had to do. For you and your 5 friends, it is unlikely you would only be at the place an hour and rack up a $300 check, but if you did, the server definately ran their ass off for you. Think about it....that's about 60 bucks a head. So figure at least 2 drink refills per person, appetizers, entree and possibly dessert or coffee at a moderately priced restaurant.

Can you see how much running around she did? You say you are the only ones in the place in your hypothetical situation. But there are busy times and not busy times, and she isn't there for just an hour.

Devil's advocate time... How does the cost of the food figure into effort? I'm fine with tipping based on how they've done (and the waiters I see regularly know they'll be well taken care of if my water is never empty), but I don't understand why it's worth more to bring a thirty dollar steak than a ten dollar salad...

Cost of food is typically a result of what kind of establishment it is. A high end, 5 star restaurant, for example, is going to serve higher quality food, prepared in creative ways, in particular type of ambiance. They will hire a much higher caliber server who will undergo specific training - about food preparation, fine wines, and providing impeccable service. They will need to adhere to particular grooming styles (earrings on women not to exceed a certain size, no perfumes/colognes, no facial hair on men, etc.), and are held to a much higher standard than, say, a 24 hour casual family diner.

The higher end restaurant you choose, the higher quality service you can expect to receive, the more you can expect to pay for that service.

That would make perfect sense. The two examples I used (30 dollar steak and 12 dollar salad) both come from one of my favorite restaurants, though.

I suppose I'm close minded, and won't ever quite grasp why it's the cost of the food that dictates the tip, and not just effort.

My point was that the higher the food is priced, the higher (typically) the level of effort to present it to you (background training, adhering to grooming policies, making sure your dining experience is pleasurable, etc.).

Compare your favorite place to Denny's. Are you willing to pay more for the way your $30 steak is prepared, presented and delivered? Are you willing to pay more for the way your server presents him/herself, for the dialogue he/she partakes in, the flow of service and attention to detail given?

Yes, I am. BUT... if I go there and get the bone in ribeye, I get the exact same service as if I get the chicken Caesar salad...
