The Torah, Bible and Koran (Qur'an), the holy scriptures attributed to God, and the worship of the deity, what exactly were they meant to be ?

Looking at contemporary examples of the prophet scam might give you some insight.

Okay, accepting that. Does not god instruct Josua to kill all the male inhabitants of Jericho and rape the maidens and doesn't Lot offer his daughters up to strangers passing through? And elsewhere aren't witches to be stoned to death?

I know I am being selective but you asked in the broadest of terms.

Are these then manuals of moral guidance? I would hope not.

You stole my post. I was about to say, that if you are looking for moral guidance don't use the old testament.
I always thought it funny how God would tell the Israelites to invade a country that was not bothering them, pillage their land, and kill everyone except the virgin women because they could be kept as sex slaves.

Wait a minute......Sex slaves huh?....... on the on other hand maybe it would be a good manual for me

Forgive me if this is to simplistic but aren`t the Old Testament and the Torah one and the same?

If it hasn`t been pointed out,Islam,Judaism and Christianity all worship and pray to the same God.

A point that`s missed a lot it seems.

Not quite.
There's a lot more of the Torah than there is of the old testament, and some parts of it (Genesis in particular) have been quite heavily rewritten.

So do they share anything or are they separate?

They share quite a bit, supposedly, but this is hearsay as I've not sat down and read the Torah.

Untrue. Unless you can point out where the Islamic god has sent his son to be crucified on the cross etc, like the Christian God has. ;)

Who me? .......I'm a good girl................my slaves say DAMN good!

back on topic:

I think all 3 books could be used as moral guidance if they were not so bogged down with religious dogma. The problem with religions is that most of them have an all or nothing clause. Nowadays more and more people are choosing the nothing.

Sounds like further proof you don't need the manual, to me. ;)

The Torah comprises the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. They're sometimes called the Books of Moses.

Its threads like these that make me realize how little many people understand about religions.

However, the Torah also contains a tremendous amount of commentary.  And modern day rabbis discuss the OT as well as the commentary.  Note that the discussion involves a lot more discussion with the congregants than a traditional Catholic mass (I cannot address other services because I'm not versed in them).

Is that the Torah or the Talmud?

I have been told - presumably on these forums - that the original text read "poisoners of wells" and that due to Greek and later English translation errors it was replaced by "witches".
