I spent many years working in Western Europe, and developed a deep and abiding love for all things Scandinavian, Belgian and Dutch :)

But I always looked forward to returning home to my little part of England

The French at least have the balls to tell the Americans to fuck off and fight their own wars. It'd be nice if Blair had shown that much backbone, wouldn't it?
Mind you, they also have an independent nuclear deterrent. I suspect the two facts might be related.

I think for our American friends, the idea of me having gobbled several faggots for tea tonight may well reinforce certain stereotypes. Luckily however such a stereotype should be rapidly dissipated, unlike the cause of the particular means of correction that is sure to follow on from this diet.

Good thing they know we have great beer. It could be disastrous to have to include that in this evening's programme of cliche corrections.

The beer thing is encouraging. Mind you, I have to admit that I've spoken to Americans who think Harp is decent stuff because it's European.

It depends on what you respect the French on... if it is the ability to wage war in the modern era... they been nothing but cannon fodder and a battleground for the Germans. Of course in many other things they are to be admired.

As for you Brits I think you have figured your countryman wrong. I don’t think they have ever been under the thumb of the US. I think there is a kinship between us and a willingness to support each other in times of need. It is like the boys that fight each other all the time but will fight together against others. I think because of the wars we have fought in the past as well as many British settlers that have forged this country we are still part of each other.

As for joining us in war I believe the people of the UK were just as pissed as us at their innocent citizens being butchered. Yes we have separated somewhat on how the war should be pursued in the future but this will have little effect in our basic relationship.

I thought Harp was only allowed to drown slugs?
I was downtown toronto last week, watching England play in a local man united fan pub.
Brits and Scots and Welsh and Irish, wall to wall all drinking all enjoying themselves... had it been in millwall or west ham, it wouldnt have been so close , teams rarely mix right?, but here, everyone was "english" for the day, all the dialects were great to hear after so long,
I have about ten phone numbers from other expats who wanna keep in touch.
It was a wonderful bonding experience, and no violence afterwards, that always a bonus after a soccer game.

Im more of a tartan or hofmeister when I imbibe the terrible stuff

Sierra Nevada and Goose Island both do a great IPA. Very very hoppy which might put some people off, though.

My experience of Belguim....during a spot of travelling we didn't receive much of a warm reception from the Belgians....mind you it didn't help that one of the lads (6'4) had rolled over our tent after a night on the lash and ruined the thing.....so we were pretty much sleeping rough...just laying the tent out on the ground and going into local towns for night on the beer and coming back and just getting under it....we were stinking after a week or two....so in Bruges...desperate for a bed...we tried a few places to get a couple of rooms....taking one look at us they weren't having it.....we were convinced it was because we were English but looking back it was probably because we looked like a pack of drunks (which to some is the same thing).....it didn't help that Chelsea had played there a few months before and all the idiots had smashed the town up. And pretty much everywhere we went for a beer you just couldn't strike up a conversation for love nor money......which wasn't much good for a group of exuberant 18 year olds. The strangest thing I've ever seen was in Belguim.....we were driving up the motorway and it was hoying it down....so there were a few accidents here and there and people were being cut out of cars.....and the Belgians were on bridges recording the whole thing on video cameras.....really enjoying themselves they were....dear god.....

Holland was different....we spent some time in Amsterdam....Den Haag....Eindhoven and Rotterdam....and had a right old time. The Dutch were more accomodating.....we'd met some Dutch lads in France....and they gave us their address in Rotterdam and put us up for a couple of nights and took us round the bars when we made it over that way.......the Dutch seemed to have time for us which was appreciated after Belguim.

Though.....we weren't there long enough to get a decent feel for the place really.....

And....if you've spent a lot of time over there....you'll know better than me....

They generally are not nationally distributed, but here is a short list

Three Floyds Brewery. Alpha King.
Bells Brewery, Two Hearted Ale ( my personal go-to beer" and seasonaly "Hop Slam"
Lagunitas Hop Stoopid

DogFish Head brewery, 90 min. IIPA

Not heard of any of those, Jeffff. I'll have to track some down if they're better than the Sierra Nevada.

Yes they are... The Hop Slam is seasonal. They rest are readily avail.

Two Hearted may be the perfect brew.

I see you are a brit too. Are you, like me, just a little pissed with fellow brits who whine on about American TV being crap ?

I think what they mean is that American TV has a lot of commercials. But lets face it. Most of the great films out there are American !

A lot of it is very good indeed. Mind you, I don't think we get any of the real dreck over here in the first place.
Most of the American sitcoms are a fair bit better than Coming Of Age or Gavin and Stacey, put it that way.
