I have to ask a question here, and I apologize if this carries things "out of the wings", but may I ask why teaching kids about their body parts and general human sexuality is any different than teaching about any OTHER biological process, either in humans or in other creatures, plants, etc?

Seriously, if we want people to be able to start accepting diversity among human beings, we're going to -have- to, eventually, start considering our sexuality as just another biological function. The more we fixate on it and keep it 'secret', the more people will be able to point to the sexual natures of others and call them "wrong".

Just a thought.

Why do you assume I'll be puritanical?  Because I don't want someone else teaching my children about sexual education, so I just HAVE to be puritanical?  OH WOW.

If I were a good parent, I'd opt out and teach my child how I feel they need to be taught sexual education.  I'd also supplement everything being taught as far as grammar, history, etc.

Not puritanical, but I wonder why teaching kids about sexual functioning brings out such a response? Seriously, to me teaching the birds and the bees is no different than teaching kids how we take a dump... it is just biology.... ooops., I forgot, in Texas they don't like things like "biology" with its radical " "evolutionists"

Maybe if you'd read the entire thread, you'd see that I stray very far off from the beliefs of your typical Texan.  I'm Pagan, I at least have a belief in evolution, before I decided to do culinary, my major was biology education.  Wow.  Your assumptions are just so damned amusing.  It's kind of ridiculous.

It's the fact that someone else aside from me is teaching my child about sexual education.  I would like to have the OPTION to opt out. That's all I expect.  That's what parents should have.  It's no different, in my mind, than having the right/choice to abort a fetus.  You may not even opt out, but you want to have the chance to do so.
Maybe there are parents out there who are irresponsible and won't educate their children, but I won't be one of them.

Ya know....my experiences with individuals who constantly tout things like "I'm Pagan" is code for "I don't have my shit together and I get to blame society". And then crazy asses go off "teaching" their children their versions of "history" and what not. There's an undercurrent issues with societal authority and a standardized system because you feel wronged by it somehow. When in actuality it's likely you just need to go deal with your shit.

The other reality is that the majority of Texans don't give a shit what you do on your land so long as you're not hurting anyone who doesn't want to be hurt and is of the age and sound enough mind to consent. The problem here is that kids can't consent and what you're talking about is setting them up for failure.

How are you talking about setting your kids for failure? What higher education courses have you taken to prepare yourself to properly educate your potential children? What resources have you found to support their education?

You keep going on and on about how you would do things differently yet you can't point to a single thing that qualifies you as an educator or a willingness to find help in that area.

Trying to equate a woman's choice to a child's education is weak. And it's an emotional draw that's failing because there is no link. There is no comparison. It's only a draw that you can make up in your head without any significant strength of argument. So please stop bringing it up.

Good luck with under educating your potential children.

boi

Edited because I can't type or remember my education first thing out of bed.

Wow... yet another post using stereotyping and judgmentalism to justify an opinion, rather than using the strength of argument and accepting that sometimes, people can disagree without it being an issue of their -religion- or the state they live in, and without them particularly being asshats, idiots, or "not having their sh*t together". What gives you the right to preach on someone else's philosophical or religious perspectives when you know nothing about either the PERSON or the PHILOSOPHY? In my 30 years as an ordained minister in a non-Judeo-Christo-Muslim path, I can tell you that MOST of the Pagans I've met have "had their shit together", have been well educated, have been socially responsible, and have, for the most part, been very dedicated to their offsprings' well being and education. I'd be cautious about flinging sh*t because the wind might change.

Hey hey hey...I said people who go "touting that their pagan" at damn near every turn.

Most of the individuals I know who are Pagan don't go blasting about it in every conversation they have. They have their personal philosophies and beliefs and they keep to themselves about it rather than using the fact of having those beliefs as to the reason they get treated badly.

That's all.

The reason that it came up in the first place was because of THIS post -- blatant stereotyping:

quote:

Not puritanical, but I wonder why teaching kids about sexual functioning brings out such a response? Seriously, to me teaching the birds and the bees is no different than teaching kids how we take a dump... it is just biology.... ooops., I forgot, in Texas they don't like things like "biology" with its radical " "evolutionists"

Quite frankly, my first inclination was to remind folks that I live in Texas, too, and have raised kids in Texas -- and the only reason I didn't mention my religious background is because MOST of the folks here already -know- it, because I've brought it up before when similar stereotypical remarks were made... so I think this was a completely justifiable use of religious philosophy in order to respond to the inaccuracy and stereotyping in another post.

Regardless of the fact that I agree with the poster of the above comment regarding treating human sexuality in the same manner as any other biological education, rather than making it some "secret" knowledge that can only be passed on through some esoteric means, I feel that using stereotypes or bashing someone else's home or religion are not the way to make concrete, rational arguments.

At the moment, I don't have a favorite school district.  If it were up to me, I'd move back to Texas and raise my future children where I was raised, but as of right now, this is all "pretend."

It all makes sense now
Is there a problem with Texas?

I don't think Asm is touting it at every turn as much as she is trying to make a point that not all people want to choose how their children are educated regarding sex due to traditional Christian values.

I could be wrong, but.....

lol-That was the point I was trying to make.  A few on here have tried to say it is due to the ignorance of christian values that someone would want to keep their child from being taught about such things in school.

I think it is a choice we make as a parent, one of many we make to the best of our ability, and I don't see where so much of the venom is coming from towards Asm.

Actually, "y'all" is singular -- "all y'all" is the plural form.

Ah so, it is your discomfort that would bother you, not necessarily your child's. Very revealing I think.

How typical of you. Perhaps HIS discomfort is over the development of HIS CHILD which is his responsibility, who doesnt have a clue what to be uncomfortable about.

And how typical of you to do someone else's thinking for them and not allow them to clarify their own reasoning. Put your tool kit away. I would bet this lady doesn't need your help.
