Fifth grade is 10-11/12.  I was ten when I was in fifth grade.

And I know.  My father taught middle school and he had pregnant students, which appalled him.  Kids that age shouldn't even be thinking like that.  They're just hitting puberty.

They are, with raging hormones. And have you heard about the bracelets these young girls are wearing? Depending on the color that a boy snatches off a girls arm, there is a predetermined sex act that goes along with it.

How is that for sex education at home.

Just because you don't agree with the fact that they're thinking or doing something doesn't mean they shouldn't be educated on the issue.

Here's a fact: Latin females, in the United States, ages 15-25 are at the highest risk of contracting HIV because their culture and the impact of Catholicism on their culture leave those young women to believe anal sex isn't "sex" so it's ok to not use a condom.

I'm all for it, as long as it's age-appropriate. It would be nice to live in a society where children who come from a family with same-gender parents to not be mocked and chastisted. I think it would be fine to teach kindergartners that partners can be the same gender and to start a culture of acceptance for that. I also think it would be a good idea for them to know the names of the body parts and "good touch" vs "bad touch".

As far as the older grades, once again, I'm in support of "sex ed" as far as teaching them the reproductive system, safe sex practices, how to apply a condom, how to avoid pregnancy, how std's can be contracted and how to avoid them, etc etc.

And I do agree that it should ultimately be the parents' choice to opt their child out of the class, however I would hope the specifics of what is going to be discussed would be on the permission slip, so that they are not being mislead into thinking that their 5-yr olds are going to learn how to have sexual intercourse.

And if this is going to start in Kindergarten, we need to get our teachers into some continuing education workshops so that they're qualified to handle touchy subjects such as child molestation, and the questions that may arise from the children.

if the influence of catholicism is so strong, the fact that anal sex is considered a sin would also be a factor.

The first part of your statement can be supported via CDC stats, the second part (which I underlined) is conjecture on your part, unless you have a link to support that. The article that you cited didn't even address anal sex vs vaginal sex amongst these women, never mind linking their catholic beliefs with a higher incidence of HIV.

Maybe they just don't want to get pregnant, or maybe they just like anal sex, or maybe they're not even engaging in more anal sex than any other ethnic group.

But for the sake of discussion....Let's go on the hypothetical that Latino females, aged 15-25, do in fact engage in more anal sex than other ethnic groups. I might even make the supposition myself that some of them are engaging in anal sex rather than vaginal sex because of their belief that they'd still be a "virgin" if they don't engage in vaginal sex; that we could hold their religious beliefs responsible for.

But even in those cases, the impact of catholicism isn't the cause of a higher incidence of HIV. If they are contracting HIV via anal sex (for whatever reason they choose to engage in it), the cause is either a lack of knowledge or a lack of concern that anal sex carries the risk of contracting HIV.

This sounds great.  Pretty much everything I agree with.
