I've never heard conservatives say having children on welfare was "profitable".
I have heard various people say that women drawing AFDC and other welfare rarely stop after the first one. Which is what they call, you know a fact. Rather than madeup BS like, you know, profitable.

An obscure reading of the amendment is used to justify anchor babies, it needs to be addressed. Of course with the Kagan and Sotomayor and Ginsburg and Breyer appointments the present opinion will most likely stand.
Good, worse is better.
The future: Tribal warfare over the goodies, what's left of them.

Not fucking likely....

I would not object to a relatively easy path to permanent legal resident status for illegal aliens who have proven they are otherwise productive members of society.
But American citizenship is too valuable, to me, ever to be a reward for illegality.

Hanscuff18 -> RE: 14th amendment debate (8/7/2010 5:21:26 PM)

I can't stand illegal anything, especially gangs and so forth. Not all illegal immigrants are criminals, per se, save for the fact they are here illegally. Someone might want to mention that many, many "illegal immigrants" work in this country and social security is taken out of thier checks. Several of whom will never collect. The same holds true for Federal Withholding taxes and they do not file. Seems profitable for the government in some ways.

Not to argue, and off topic, but NH isn't a conservative state unless you count voting for Bush in 2000. The Senators are 1 Democrat and Judd Gregg who doesn't vote party lines and is vacating his seat probably to be taken by Hodes a Democrat. Both representatives are Democrats as is the Governor. They also voted for Kerry and not Bush the second election.

I've never heard Keith Olbermann say anything that even remotely sounded like fear. He likes to call Sarah Palin an idiot though.

Section 411(d) of PRWORA permits States to expand alien eligibility
by providing State or local public benefits to illegal aliens. But this
may occur only if the State enacts a law after August 22, 1996, that
affirmatively provides that illegal aliens are eligible to receive (all
or particular
) State or local public benefits.

http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ofa/law-reg/finalrule/tanfru_2.htm

I dont believe Butch indicated the parents were ever eligible, but stated they got it through their legally born children. Note the above. TANF can be made available to illegal aliens per their final ruling;

But Tazzy, aren't there work requirements and time limits set by law in TANF? Doesn't that limit the numbers of elegible families? The discussion on here is reminescent of Ronald Reagan's "Welfare Queen" rhetoric in his campaign for president.

The average number of monthly recipients for welfare (AFDC) in 1996 was over 12 million. In 1997 when TANF began the number dropped to a little over 10 million. By 2007 it was down to under 4 million. A very large percentage of that number are kids.

I think it has increased since the recession of 2008 no doubt, but it is not like the world is coming here to get rich on our welfare. Four million people out of a population of more than 300 million is barely a bit more than 1.0 % of our population.

And btw, do we have any idea how many States if any have made TANF available to illegals?

It seems shameful to bicker over helping such a relatively small number of needy people. Mainly, it is political passion at work here to point fingers at so few and think that will resolve our national economic problems. Pretty ugly stuff I think coming from the dispassionate Conservatives.

TANF is a WORK program, people. It ended "welfare as we knew it." About time we dispensed with the old "Welfare Queen" mythology that is being applied here to aliens and deal with the more substantial problems of what to do with these people. John McCain was for comprehensive reform before he was against it.

OK...they stay home...poor lifestyle...poor healthcare for their children...poor schools...poor housing…OR... They have their children in the US... Better jobs...better healthcare...better schools...better housing and utilities…welfare to offset costs.

What decision would you make?

Butch

I'd think long and hard about it - the wages sure aren't enough to compensate for the cost of living and housing, or you wouldn't have 8 guys set up in a one-bedroom apartment, or anyone living in colonias.  Many illegals are men who send home money to support families back in Mexico and Central America.  There are entire villages filled with nothing but kids, women, and guys too old to make it to America.

I find it very entertaining when people post sources with no "about us" section or "Who we are" section...

What, is this some third grader that made this website?

FR...

Birthright Citizenship is a Hallmark of American ideals and of our Nation and it should not be tampered with EVER!

If the political powers that get elected in the country would do their jobs, secure and where necessary seal and our borders and ports AND prosecute the people hiring illegal aliens, then this would not be an issue at all.

First, i brought it up only because someone mentioned illegals cannot get welfare. TANF states they can. I can only assume there are limitations. I never stated they were collecting for a lifetime or getting rich. Merely pointing out the error of the posters.

Read the thread. That was exactly what Butch was implying when he suggested that illegals have children in order to get the welfare benefits.

No it's not, it's bullshit. You're listening to the wrong radio station again.

kdsub -> RE: 14th amendment debate (8/7/2010 10:38:48 PM)

Panda I'm not conservative... moderates can dislike illegal aliens who purposely take advantage of our welfare system too.
