It is Monday, Sept. 20, the middle of the day, in Washington. CNBC is holding a town hall for the president. A woman stands—handsome, dignified, black, a person with presence. She looks as if she may be what she turns out to be, an Obama supporter who in 2008 put up street signs, passed out literature and tried to win over co-workers. As she later told the Washington Post, "I was thinking that the people who were against him and didn't believe in his agenda were completely insane."

The president looked relieved when she stood. Perhaps he thought she might lob a sympathetic question that would allow him to hit a reply out of the park. Instead, and in the nicest possible way, Velma Hart lobbed a hand grenade.

"I'm a mother. I'm a wife. I'm an American veteran, and I'm one of your middle-class Americans. And quite frankly I'm exhausted. I'm exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change that I voted for, and deeply disappointed with where we are." She said, "The financial recession has taken an enormous toll on my family." She said, "My husband and I have joked for years that we thought we were well beyond the hot-dogs-and-beans era of our lives. But, quite frankly, it is starting to knock on our door and ring true that that might be where we are headed."

Peggy Noonan: The enraged vs. the exhausted

Someone has been asking when the panic starts for the Dems about November 2. This, I think, is a sign that they should.

Old fucking news. I saw the vid last week. The woman who stood up is the CFO of AMVETs, right? She and her hubby pull in well over 200K a year. They send their kids to private schools. And she's bitching about the possibility of eating beanie weenies?

It's been suggested she's a Repub plant. Wouldn't surprise me.

And the fucking Refucks are tripping balls if they think they have anywhere near the momentum that they had in 94.

What's their message now? "We pledge if you vote for us we won't spend money like the Pentagon on crack." Fucking alcoholics and junkies make pledges like that. And we're supposed to believe them again?

Hahahahahahaha that is fucking rich.

And now you'll probably spend half the thread insisting I answer your honest question about that.

Get off my thread, Tits. Go read a definition of disingenuous or something.

Well, that answers my next question, as to whether she gets thrown under the bus. LOL.

I thought Julia was Tits (sorry Julia).

Or is it just  that you can't keep track of the disparaging nicknames you have for people that you are unable to make a convincing argument with?

The participants were hand picked by the Administration. Of course so were the losers he's handpicked for nearly every other position, so its no surprise they blew a town hall.

ROFL, How do you think the attendees get in? They wait on line? Buy tickets? Get a clue. They are chosen from groups and organizations expected to be friendly to the speaker.

While I wouldn't be surprised if she were a clever plant by the grand old party, I highly doubt they're anywhere near clever.

As has been said above: "What's their message now? 'We pledge if you vote for us we won't spend money like the Pentagon on crack.' Fucking alcoholics and junkies make pledges like that. And we're supposed to believe them again?"

This is my general sentiment towards Washington and my vote for Obama was the last bit of hope I really had that the system could easily recover from the inside out.  Now I more frequently and seriously think that a complete and systematic replacement of every legislator, executive, and judicial officer in high offices is what's necessary for true recovery to take place.  The most obvious (and I'd like to say cinematically attractive) choice is a full-scale constitutional rebellion, but that risks even more incompetents getting into the works, so I'm dumbfounded.

Here's hoping some good fellows get in before everything falls apart at the seams.

Here's the official version on that

quote:

Who's in the audience? About 200 men and women (no kids), described by CNBC as "a cross section of Americans who are interested in the economy. From college students and union workers to small business owners and retirees." The questions are going to focus on the economy, jobs, Wall Street, banking.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/39195044/Live_Blog_CNBC_s_Town_Hall_with_President_Obama

Personally, I don't buy the notion of a handpicked audience. You need a big pool to do that. As we saw at a another event recently reported, he can't fill a hall right now. By that measure I suppose, she could be plant.

Damn those fiendish Re-whatever, huh, Hippie? They're so baa-aaad and mean, but their evil conspiracies always manage to foil the noble Democrats, somehow.

(Transcript via MSNBC)
>>velma hart gave voice to the frustrations of many middle class americans. she’s the national finance director and cfo for a veteran’s organization. she served in the army reserve for almost a decade. welcome.
>> thank you so much.
>> what you did i thought yesterday was speak clearly about american life. when you talked about how you used to have to have hot dogs and beans as the main dinner because it was inexpensive and you fear you may have to go back to that and one kid heading to college, i think you captured the reality of a lot of americans.
>> appreciate you saying that because that’s my reality. i’m worried. i shouldn’t be. i should have confidence in our leaders, but i’m getting a little anxious and the other thing i’m concerned about is a lot of other people are getting anxious. anxious people do desperate things and i’d like for us to avoid that. do you think the president of the united states has in his office, the power to dramatically reduce the unemployment rate?
>> single handedly, absolutely not. this is a democracy for a reason and i respect that. however, he is our chief and the hard questions have to go to him. i deeply respect the president. i appreciate his contributions, the progress we’ve made to date, but i’m troubled. i hope at some point, even though i knew i had to defend him and why i voted for him and i was good with that, i hoped at some point, it would become easier to defend him and it’s still very hard and may get harder by design.
>> i want you to grade his answer here. here’s the answer to your question. he talked about what he had done in terms of credit card issues as president. let’s listen.
>> if you have a credit card, which i assume you do –
>> no.
>> now, you really — now you’re showing how responsible you are.
>> then he goes and talks about his achievements. he goes more into it here.
>> as a consequence of the changes we made, the credit card companies can’t increase your interest rate without notifying you if your child had a preexisting condition. before i took office, you were out of luck in terms of being able to get health insurance for that child. there are a whole host of things that we’ve put in place that do make your life better.
>> what did you make of that because you were saying times were tough and he talked about the reality of life and he was telling you stuff you didn’t know, but do you think it was helpful?
>> the changes he outlined, credit card changes, the scholarship changes, those are positive changes, they just won’t affect me at this time. he also, i appreciated the fact he allowed me to joke with him. of course i have a credit card. is there an american that doesn’t? the thing that i was left with in the answer is that those are great things, mr. president, and no question, you’ve made progress and we appreciate that, however, we want to feel it.
>> what was he supposed to say? we have almost 9.6% unemployment rate. is he supposed to say it’s coming down, anything that would make you happy?
>> he was very candid and honest about the fact that he knows times are hard and he was not there to defend how difficult things were and i appreciated that because i think that’s the honest answer. i think the opening for me was is this the new reality. and i don’t think he touched — i did.
>> that’s a great question. my wife calls that the reset and says we may be in for a reset, people hoping to have a certain life for their kids have to downgrade that.
>> one of the questions i’ve been asked is velma, you appear to be doing pretty good. two kids in private schools, you have a job an your husband has a job. it’s all relative. there are compromises we make to send our children to private schools. i’d like a new car. my car is having issues. we delayed that and it’s a deliberate decision. there are other things we’re doing and making decisions every day just like everybody else. we are looking at our 401(k) plans and determining how much we can afford. we’re looking at the tax bill for our house and seeing the value of that drop.
>> what do you think the government can do, democracy, that he could be doing to reduce damatically the unemployment rate? how does he reduce it dramatically?
>> i absolutely don’t know the answer to that. i think someone said yesterday that that was one of the questions they had and they don’t know the absolute answer to that. but i think it’s necessary because that’s the way we’re going to build consumer confidence. that’s the way things like the stimulus will work because when consumers are confident and they’re not fearful, they’ll spend and invest in the economy.
>> it’s a vicious circle. we can give them all the speeches in the world.
>> what’s important to us, chris, is that the organization i work for, we’re at war. we’re bringing veterans home all the time coming home maimed sometimes or from a normal tour and they can’t find employment, housing. they can’t protect their families. thank you for saying that. i appreciate that.
>> thank you. velma hart. i think it’s great. i think it helped the president. shook him loose a little bit to see that clear, confident voice. i think he’s a little surrounded by yes people.
>> well, i want to say for the record, i am a supporter and i i believe in the vision and i’m hoping he’s going to come through. i have great faith in him and i think he will.

well, i want to say for the record, i am a supporter and  i believe in the vision and i’m hoping he’s going to come through. i have great faith in him and i think he will.

What did she expect? BoBo is a representative of the banking cartels. Nothing is going to change in Washington. The next president will be another Wall St. shill too. Unless Washington DC falls off the continent and slides to bottom of the Atlantic (the mere thought of it makes me almost giddy) nothing will ever change. Even if such a joyous geologic change were to occur, I doubt it would truly change anything. The "people" would quickly install another slick talking, blood thirsty Wall St. monster into a position of absolute power. Then we'd probably invade Burkina Faso

This isn't the Bush administration anymore Willbeur.

You don't have to sign a loyalty pledge to talk with the President.

Republican party

Though not legally binding, the Republican National Committee (RNC) used both signed Loyalty Oaths and spoken Loyalty Pledges as a requirement to attend certain 2004 re-election campaign speeches, a possible first in U.S. election history.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, the campaign of George W. Bush routinely required all attendants at its rallies to take what some have called a "loyalty oath". Those who refused to take the oath were not allowed to attend the rally.

The "loyalty oath" was actually a pledge of endorsement. These endorsements were used during some of the campaign rallies in 2004. The Bush campaign asserted that the oath was valid because the president was conducting a partisan campaign event. Opponents countered that the oath was intrusive to individual conscience, somewhat fascist in nature and denied general public access to the president.

It's about time for some good turnover among the staff, RML. Perhaps they could use a man of your experience?
