If I picked a quiet street to live in and valued that, I'd be pissed about any party. My next door neighbors are both at least in their fifties and when they party, I can frikkin' hear it. When I was 16 I had to drive 40+ folks home sometimes from my parent's parties - to be fair they were not sloppy drunk by any means, just everyone (including myself) prefered me driving them.

Let's not pretend that the partying ends at 30.

This isn't my first time on a forum like this, and I've seen it all before. 'You can't possibly know what you want! You're only *insert number)!' I'm 21 now, I've been interested in BDSM for 7 years, I've acted on it several times, and I've been learning. The more I learn, the more I understand myself and what I want.

My parents raised us kids to go the extra mile for everyone, whether they deserved it or not. We'd constantly host other families for dinner, while the 'adults' offered help to each other. We grow our own food, and are pretty much self sustaining. My parents taught my siblings and I 1)give to others before you take for yourself 2) greed is the downfall of everyone (don't hog the food, of your sister goes hungry, ext) 3) help others in need, regardless if it's an inconvenience to you.

I'm not offended by people telling me I can't possibly be old enough. My parents on the other hand, have gotten bent out of shape, when I tell them how people talk to me like I'm an idiot just because of my age. They feel that it is a direct insult to their hard work to rear four helpful, intelligent now-adults.

You add it to your sig line.  It's not that formal a designation.

And to echo what Greedy said, Welcome!

Thank you all for once again reinforcing the feel-good myth that there are no generational differences; that age has nothing to do with wisdom or maturity and because of that "fact", all you middle-aged subs wouldn't have any problems serving an 18yo Master.
Focus.

I'll step up to the plate and say I would most likely find it difficult serving an 18 year old master,
but it wouldn't be because I felt he was incapable of being dominant, but more so because I
don't think there would be many shared interests outside of the bedroom. It is possible though.

However, the OP isnt stating that it's silly to expect people of our age to enter into a relationship
with someone in there teens/early twenties, but making an assumption that they are clueless to their
desire to participate in this lifestyle choice in the first place. And yet we pressure our children to go to
college right out of high school, assuming they know what they want out of their life....

I have read and re-read the comments under this thread and I can see both sides of the point. I think the OP assumes that age comes with "life lessons" that everyone learns from. He also, I assume, sees older people as having thought things through far more than younger people do. The final thought, though unspoken, is that older people have sampled more of life and thus have more of an experience base from which to pick and choose what is best for them.

The first two points I disagree with and see as being largely meritless. I do not see older people as necessarily having more wisdom than younger people through experience. Rather, I see older people who were wise as young people growing in their wisdom while older people who were fools in their youth remain fools in their old age. I can't count the number of fifty-something's I see collecting their wellfare check and cashing it in the local bar and grill. Most people, in my opinion, simply continue on the path they set as a young person (even younger than me).

As for the proliferation of young people in this lifestyle, I think it simply reflects a broader acceptance of alternative lifestyles by and in the public at large. I can assure you that very few people of my age, in my acquaintance, are as set in this lifestyle as I am. Few of my friends would realize just how "kinky" I am (aside from my lack of body hair, which I am pretty good at covering up).

As for the whole "sampling of life" thing, I am not sure that age plays a huge roll in that either. Most older people I know do not have a huge experience pool from which they draw. Rather, they simply keep making essentially the same mistakes over and over. Honestly, of the older people I have met "in the lifestyle", few claim to have become dominant or submissive at some golden age. Rather, all of them (that I know) claim to have always been dominant or submissive, they simply came to recognize it and come to terms with it at a given age. In my case, that age was fourteen.

I am also that ignorant.

After seeing your profile you may want to consider the ignorance of youth and how your beliefs may eventually conflict with your lifestyle choice.

Just which of her beliefs conflict with her 'lifestyle choice'? I must have missed it.

Apparently you did.

Read her profile.

Then get back with me if you want to discuss this so-called Christian BDSM, because I can bore you all day long with my opinions on that.

I only pooh poop the idea and concept of a mentor or a teacher, when it's something that I feel you should be able to do on your own by the time you're forming relationships, like know how to spot predators and take care of your own well being,  and choose partners wisely,  that mentars are not nessesary, if you have the common sense skills to be wise in who you're picking and associating with.

I did say that mentors to teach you how to do a skill, or something you really shouldn't learn from trial and error is a wonderful way to go.

As for folks not needing mentors or people who might be able to teach them as another poster said, I think that isn't the smartest recommendation in the world.  There are a lot of things connected with kink that could have serious complications if you decide that you want to learn by trial and error.  How about we just recommend that folks run out, buy a violet wand, and then not bother to ask the guy they've seen play with one month after month about safety practices?  Yeah, it's so much better to shock people to death with electricity rather than for them to have a mentor.

Well that was all too predictable....

Thank you all for once again reinforcing the feel-good myth that there are no generational differences; that age has nothing to do with wisdom or maturity and because of that "fact", all you middle-aged subs wouldn't have any problems serving an 18yo Master.

Oh yeah, and that someone ALWAYS knows some 50yo more immature than most teens, thus debunking a greater truth (apparently).

But speaking of middle-aged, hands up everyone who gets happy and excited at the prospect of a teenage party in your quiet suburban street?

Yeah, LOTS of shameless generalisations - I agree. But what about some underlying truth within them - NONE of *you* agree?

Focus.

I don't disagree with you.

I know plenty well I don't know exactly what I want out of life. Most people my age are simply not bothered at all by it. It's simply not an issue.

No middle-aged partners for us? That's perfectly alright, I guess.

Sure parties can be limited to appropriate venues or well-designated streets suitable for debauchery. That's perfectly reasonable, too.

The real key is to not put yourself in a situation where you're responsible for more than you want to be. Responsability in small doses - how to be young, safely.
