Not if they are monogamous, the laws of monogamy state that opportunity is not proportional to population size.

Ahem, the laws of monogamy are similar to the Newtonian laws of motion(s) but there are less of them.

When one of the men at my first unit heard they were getting me, he had a "ewww, girl" attitude. A few months later we were married, which lasted 14 years.

Status: offline 		I believe the practice of no women in certain military situations has less to do with physical limitations than the brotherhood and trust that is vital in combat and special forces activities. Essentially, our boys really can't have anything fucking up their headspace. I don't mean to say that they're not strong-willed enough to keep it in their pants if there is a woman around in a highly stressful situation. I mean that a woman is not a man, and that bond the the Army works so hard to forge among their soldiers is not going to work the same way with women as with men. Just the fact that woman want to be part of it is case in point. And yes, same with gays in the military. So it's not just a matter of allowing women to serve in certain roles. What goes along with that is the need for the Army to readjust their longtime protocol of how those bonds are forged among their men. This is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm just saying that it's easy for us to say "Heck, yes, let women fight if they want to" but it's just simply not as easy as opening a door.

Personally, I'm all for letting anyone do anything they like as far as equality of gender goes. But there are sometimes, and this is one of them, when I as an American will gladly defer whatever rights to equality I think I have to the better judgment of our military leaders. They know far more than any of us do about the current state of the Army and how to best fight our enemies.

The Army will have to fundamentally change, which simply can't be accomplished overnight.

I pretty much agree with that - it isn't about the strength, or the ability, or the capacity to pass the training - it's about the culture surrounding the adoption of the concept.

And we are, as a society, moving closer to accepting it almost daily - I don't think, for example, that there's any doubt we're closer to the end product than we were, say, even 50 years ago.

As long as that change continues to move the troops AWAY from mainstream soceity, that's progress.

Which is why the troops are confined to prancing around some derelict town like Wootton Bassett, and don't march down Trafalgar Square; they'd be flash-lynched.
