Ugh, how patronizing. The OP and yourself are being incredibly obtuse and offensive. This thread may have had something worth discussing but it was originally worded in a deliberately offensive way- it wasn't at all that the OP didn't ask his question in the right code words. Nice false comparison, but unless anyone in this thread is the mother/son/dog/car/neighbor of anyone else in this thread, your comparison falls flat. The difference, since I can tell I'm already going to have to spell it out, is that those things -- the mother/son/dog/car/neighbor are directly connected to the person "defending." Here, we're all a bunch of screen names on the internet. And again, the mother/son/dog/car/neighbor bullshit doesn't apply because no one is directly attacking anyone's mother/son/dog/car/neighbor. Therefor, any offense taken is purely at the behest of the one taking it.

I learned a long time ago that someone somewhere will take offense to anything they wish to take offense to. You can't word your statements, questions, comments in a way that will never offend anyone. It's simply not possible. Therefore, this quest for the ultimate in political correct, non-offensive discussion is utter bullshit and derails real discussion.

I always speak my mind. If you take offense to that, that's on you. Not me.

Oh yes, because that makes perfect sense. I made a profile nearly two years ago, then let it sit for two years and made a new one just to start talking to myself. It is generally expressed in those terms in laymen's language, yes.

The true picture is somewhat more complex, as sociopaths exhibit more than merely that response, but yes that's the crux of how it's normally phrased.

"Arsehole" also about covers it.

Greedy and RF have it right - what you're in effect saying is that we all are, or *should* be, sociopaths. Most of us, (except for those who perhaps should be safely locked up) not only feel offence for others, we feel the entire gamut of emotions for them. Were that not to be the case, nobody would ever have written a poem or a novel, painted a picture or made a film. People have been feeling for others since long before they saw Romeo and Juliet coming to a horrible tragic death on stage. Human society wouldn't even exist without this empathy, this ability to feel offence - and every other emotion - for others. I honestly think yours is the most deranged theory I've ever read at CM (and it wins that prize against some *really* stiff competition, I can tell you).
