GW Bush ... "In regard to him ever being president of the United States, my advice to you Aggies and to any of those doubters, don't bet against Arnold Schwarzenegger," Bush told about 2,500 people attending the award ceremony at Texas A&M University.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, a political ally of Schwarzenegger, introduced the Equal Right to Govern Amendment in July 2003, a few weeks before the actor declared his candidacy in the recall election in which Californians ousted Democrat Gray Davis as governor.

If Hatch's amendment is adopted, an immigrant who has been a naturalized citizen for 20 years could run for president or vice president.

While the bill is considered dead for this session, it could be resurrected in the next.

I have no objection to the requirement. I do have objections to it being made public. No other president had to go through that. Why start now.

I demand the requirement. I also demand it be made public. No other POTUS has intentionally sealed any/all documents pertaining to his citizenship and fought every legal attempt to force him to provide a Court with same. That's why.

mnottertail -> RE: Birther News (3/8/2011 7:24:51 AM)

Well, lets try again then, with Dutch Reagan, or are the birthers just that stupid for letting this become an issue, what is it they are scared of?

tazzygirl -> RE: Birther News (3/8/2011 7:25:00 AM)

Then show me Reagan's birth certificate.

Because no other President ever had such a dark complexion would be my guess.
(God only knows what they'd whining about if Hilary had got the nomination...)

Exactly. God only knows what we'd whine about if he actually proved he is a "natural born Citizen"

tazzygirl -> RE: Birther News (3/8/2011 7:30:04 AM)

No doubt a child would be laughing at you as hard as I am.

Lucy is right, you do need to practice.

However, my post was half comical, half serious. Since the SC wont answer the question, why doesnt Congress?

truckinslave -> RE: Birther News (3/8/2011 7:30:13 AM)

Well, I admit that you found more than I remembered.

To the extent that Hatch is a conservative (perhaps, I suppose, in the opinion of some), I stand corrected.

And, I suppose I should have said "no action anyone took seriously", so I stand corrected on the "no action" thing as well.

But, seriously, tg, one can find almost that much support for unicorns on the moon, if one has the time (I don't. Sorry [:D])

truckinslave -> RE: Birther News (3/8/2011 7:31:13 AM)

Just say no, mn. RDS much?

tazzygirl -> RE: Birther News (3/8/2011 7:31:49 AM)

You made a statement that I knew wasnt true. Doesnt mean you lied... just that your memory is slipping.. [;)]

t wasn't too long ago that a lot of right-wingers were actually wanting to change the laws so that Arnold could run for president weren't they?

No.
In the first place, right-wingers don't support RINOs like Arnold.
In the second, there was no serious talk that I remember from anyone, much less right-wingers. And certainly no action.
Methinks you have made a claim you cannot substantiate, igor.

Methinks your memory is faulty.

Schwarzenegger for President?

A more recent case involves Austrian-born Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former Governor of California.  Almost from the day he became governor on November 17, 2003, until he left office on January 3, 2011, there was constant speculation that he may one day run for president.

In an interview for the CBS News program, 60 Minutes, correspondent Morley Safer put the question directly to Schwarzenegger.  Schwarzenegger responded, “Yes!  Absolutely!  I think, you know, because why not?  Like with my way of thinking, you always shoot for the top.”

California Congressman Dana Rohrabacher drafted a constitutional amendment that would allow anyone who's been a U.S. citizen for 20 years or more to run for president or vice president.

Presumably Rohrabacher’s proposal would amend the opening clause of Article II, Section 1 to read, “No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this constitution, or a person who has been a citizen of the United States for at least twenty (20) years, shall be eligible to the office of President;”.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, has prepared a similar amendment for introduction in the Senate.

And, there could be any other reason?

Exactly, there could not be any other reason.
There are numerous other reasons.

truckinslave -> RE: Birther News (3/8/2011 7:38:30 AM)

That seems to be the position of Dr Rice.

I would personally prefer to see SCOTUS do it, through the actions being attempted by the states. Part of that desire is that the decision might not be seen as nakedly partisan. There is imo a serious potential for violence associated just with the formation of the committee Rice wants, much less with its potential findings. Perhaps, and only perhaps, that potential is lessened if SCOTUS takes it up.

I am anxious for some of the states to sign their proposed bills into law, and to see the next move by Team 0bama0.
If these laws are enacted, my money is he drops out and leaves everything sealed.....
The guilty leaving the country, so to speak....

You never tire of being wrong, at least.

truckinslave -> RE: Birther News (3/8/2011 7:39:54 AM)

Got a lot of traction, too, I suppose?

truckinslave -> RE: Birther News (3/8/2011 7:40:53 AM)

And I am happy to admit it, too.

I also see the states attempts leading towards a final ruling.. it would push the issue. No doubt there will be many challenges. However, I also see a call for violence from the states if the SC doesnt rule "their" way.

Whats to prevent Congress from enacting laws contrary to a SC's ruling if it doesnt go the way the "ruling party" determines it should be?

Did I miss it in the gun regulation?  Did I miss it in the nursing thread?  Did I miss it in the Scalia wink?

I have no idea what the purpose of the innuendo is, but it didn't result in SCOTUS finding it necessary......
