I should hope not. If she cleans the equipment after each use, does not draw blood, and doesn't use a strap-on....

You start gnawing on one of those little spyrochete pustules, you are engaging in high risk behavior right there, I don't care who you are.

Forget the bdsm stuff - if there is fluid exchange or intimate bodily contact or lots of touching of genitals and poor hygiene, there's just as much chance of catching an STI as any other sexual activity.

Ask about how she cleans her equipment. Make sure any insertables have condoms on them. If items that cannot be run through a dishwasher will be used to draw blood, consider buying your own and bringing it with you.

In a legal, professional setting a pro-domme does not have sexual contact with a client.  When I was a pro, we made sure to wash our hands with antiseptic soap like at any other job and I checked each client for obvious sores or discharge before sessioning with them.  Some STDs leave no visible tells so be sure to have yourself tested regularly if you are sexually active with anyone.  I only used strap-ons with regular clients who provided me with their own toy.  Professional dungeons often have their Mistresses tested regularly as opposed to private Mistresses.

Good Luck

Is a dishwasher enough to sterilise surgical equipment? (?!???!!??)

(That's a genuine question; I've never done anything involving bloodplay and have therefore never researched it. But I wouldn't have thought that a dishwasher would be hot enough.)

rockspider -> RE: can pro domination session cause STDs? (7/25/2011 4:01:12 PM)

Generally 75 C is considered the temperature where harmful bacteria are killed and since most dishwashers do 85 C it should theoretically be enough. However surgical equipment is always sterilized in an autoclave (fancy pressure cooker) in the medical world. The ones I have been working on goes to 6 bar pressure which translates to about 165 C. I never really asked why, but there must be a reason as this is a very expensive way of doing it, specially as I would guess, boiling should be sufficient. Maybe a biologist would know why.

thishereboi -> RE: can pro domination session cause STDs? (7/25/2011 4:22:33 PM)

Having unprotected sex with anyone can cause STD's.  That said most of the pros I know won't have any kind of sex with you so it shouldn't be a problem.

There are multiple strains of microbes that can survive 75-85 C. It used to be believed that 121 C for 15 minutes (hence superheated steam in the autoclave) killed anything living (didn't denature prions, but arguably, they aren't really living), but we've recently found microbes like Geogemma barossii and Methanopyrus kandleri that can survive such temperatures. However, since these tend to be found near hydrothermal vents, I wouldn't worry about them.

For surgical instruments, I'd recommend either autoclaving or utilizing single-use sterile and sealed material. It might be a tad expensive, but is generally cheaper than hospital bills.

As many have already said, no, a dishwasher isn't good enough to properly sterilize equipment. If you REALLY want to make sure your metal and glass equipment has been properly sterilized, use an autoclave. I used to work in a bio lab, and ALL our equipment went through the process before it was used. I would also NEVER go to a tattoo artist (yes, considering getting a tat) that didn't reply "autoclave" to the question "What do you use to sterilize your equipment?" Just not gonna take the risk, and not all studios carry an autoclave. Many, however, do.

To the OP, most pro dommes won't have sex with you, because to do so would be illegal (excluding a few select counties in Nevada). However, you do want to make sure their equipment has been properly sterilized and you may want to bring your own insertables. Ask lots of questions to make sure the domme you use is worth the money and is professional about her practice...in other words, make sure she makes customer satisfaction, and therefore safety, her top priority. There are plenty of pros out there. If the first few you ask don't seem ready and up front with detailed answers on safety, just go find a different one.

To RawTape: I can certainly say that a BDSM oriented forum on CM was the last place, outside of my textbooks, where I expected to see the word "prion." I must commend you, Sir, for uping the nerd standards of this forum.

So, are you saying that you weren't working in a legal, professional setting or that you only had sex with the ones that brought their own toys?  You really can't say that the policy was that you wouldn't have anal sex with them as a pro except for the times you would.

LPslittleclip -> RE: can pro domination session cause STDs? (7/25/2011 9:00:10 PM)

safe play never changes. the pro dom never causes stds only unsafe sex does. a dishwashe will eliminate most germs hot water and soap. the autoclave uses heat and pressure to kill the spores created by some viruses and bacteria this is the most efective method of eliminating all orginisms

Autoclave or a simple pressure cooker (the cheap option, unless you are playing on an industrial scale, an autoclave is a tad expensive), if you can't use that (like with vibrating sounds - you'd kill the electric parts) you want to keep them for several hours in disinfectant (alcohol) and you only use them with an antibacterial lube anyway.

LadyEternity -> RE: can pro domination session cause STDs? (7/26/2011 6:51:05 AM)

LadyPact

During the time that I was working professionally (which was many many years ago) the gray area between sex and toys was wider.  Sexual contact was considered sexual organs (penis into vagina, oral sex, or masturbation) and strap on play was not within those lines.  Today those lines may be different.  I was a private Dominatrix with my own private dungeon.  When I was referring to the professional dungeons I meant the larger ones that employ several Mistresses currently. I do know professionals who work for dungeons like that, who get tests through the dungeons they work for. I'm sorry for the confusion.  I never had sexual contact (penis to vagina or oral sex or masturbation) with my clients.  I paid for my own STD tests every six months even though I had no contact with clients (I was active with lovers)  and made them available to clients who requested them.  I admit to not being clear on what the statues today are. I just don't know if they consider strap on play part of the gray line or as sexual contact today, 10-13 years ago it was a gray area that, being younger I took advantage of.  I probably would not have done that were I operating today.  Again, my apologies for the confusion.
