siamsa24 -> RE: Trip to the Dentist (not kinky, a serious question) (7/29/2011 3:20:50 PM)

Thank you everyone! I was feeling a tiny bit weird about how proud I was on getting through the appointment.  I mean, people, children even, do this every day and don't have an issue and here I am crying, hyperventilating and throwing up just because someone wants to look in my mouth! Talk about messed up!

My FIL is possibly one of the nicest people ever, he is one of those genuinely kind people who wants to help his family and never wants anything in return.  He drove me to my appointment this morning and offered to drive me to all my appointments if I'm nervous.  He even offered to go into the exam with me.

Did the dentist put you on an antibiotic to make sure the infection is gone before he starts working on you?

I think you should be very proud of yourself, given how terrified you were.
I was proud of you!

The infection is gone, I got rid of it apparently.
I had lanced the abscess and put bourbon-soaked gauze on it for a while, then I took additional doses of vitamins C and D and used a hydrogen peroxide mixture swished in my mouth several times a day.
He said there was no sign of infection, even with all the x-rays and stuff.

edited because of the damn auto-correct

Wow that's amazing. Still I don't recommend doing that again, you got lucky this time, next time you might end up worse than before you lanced it.

siamsa24 -> RE: Trip to the Dentist (not kinky, a serious question) (7/29/2011 6:42:43 PM)

Well, having previously been a pre-med student and currently in nursing school I would like to hope I know what I'm doing a little bit [:)] (please note this is not said to be snarky, just to clarify that I actually DO know the pros and cons)

I know the danger, but I also knew that using warm compresses to bring the abscess to a head and then draining the pus was going to be far safer then waiting for it burst open on it's own.  I had to wait almost a week for an appointment and I knew that it was going to burst at some point during that week (just because of where it was located and the fact that I had to eat, talk, work, take care of my preschooler and, you know, LIVE during that week)

siamsa24 -> RE: Trip to the Dentist (not kinky, a serious question) (7/29/2011 6:48:45 PM)

That and it should be noted that I used actual medical equipment for it, not just a box cutter or something [:)].  Husband and I are quite prepared for Doomsday and have a very extensive medical kit thankyouverymuch and I just "borrowed" from it a little...... [:D]

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Trip to the Dentist (not kinky, a serious question) (7/30/2011 5:30:23 AM)

Well ya kiiiinda left that info out didn't ya, silly girl. ~waggles a finger~ Personally I wouldn't have had the guts to do it...which would have been all kinds of messy. [:'(]

I did leave that out, my bad [:)]

I forget that not everyone knows me here anymore [:)]

siamsa24 -> RE: Trip to the Dentist (not kinky, a serious question) (7/30/2011 6:04:38 AM)

And for whatever reason I'm cool with doing all those kinds of things, as long as they are to myself (or if I am doing it to someone else), I can't let someone else do it to me.

Same thing with blood draws.  I FREAK OUT if someone else tries to do it, but hand me the tourniquet and needle and you will have all the blood you need in just a few minutes!
It took me years to find a doctor who is willing to work with me on medical stuff.  I am the absolute worst kind of patient, but my doctor told me that will actually make me a better nurse or doctor (eventually) because I will be able to deal with problem patients like me [:)]

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Trip to the Dentist (not kinky, a serious question) (7/30/2011 6:04:44 AM)

Hey it's all good and as one who is prone to abscesses on her back, kudos for having the strength to pop one in your mouth. I have a thing about needles and could barely deal with the ones on my back being popped.

See I wouldn't be able to handle someone else doing it, what if they mess it up?
And here is where I run into trouble with most doctors and nurses.....[:D]

I work in a hospital and the vampires (as we call them) at work are the only ones who have been able to get blood from me without my freaking out. Like I said, I have issues with needles.

When it's on your back where you can't reach there is kinda no choice. The last time was the worse, I ended up with cellulitis which covered about 8 inches of my back. The mesh hurt like a bitch too as it was the kind with saline in it. All from an innocent lipoma.

siamsa24 -> RE: Trip to the Dentist (not kinky, a serious question) (7/30/2011 6:14:38 AM)

I have issues with needles too (and most medical personnel in general actually.....) and the only person who can easily get blood from me is me, my best friend and her boyfriend.  Unfortunately, they live in Portland, OR and I live in Cleveland, OH.
That and they both switched to law school instead of medical school (whores, making me go through all this crap by myself) and it's difficult to convince a doctor that this is my best friend and she's a law student, but she really does know how to do proper blood draws.

Ha, if I had a dollar for every time I've been called vampire, bloodsucker, ghoul, and one little Greek man would announce "hemapapikus" when one of us walked in the room.....I'd be retired on an island.

Most common questions: What do you guys do with all that blood, sell it?
Yep, we're having a party Or: No, we drink it, we're vampires, remember?

Is that needle sharp?
Yep, sharpened it out on the sidewalk right before you got here

Am I the only one you used that needle on?
Well, I tried it on that homeless guy out there on the sidewalk, but I missed his vein, so I just
wiped it off and put it back.

And my favorite: Do I need to roll my sleeve up?
Uh, yeah.....too bad you wore that tight sweatshirt here in the dead of
summer.....

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Trip to the Dentist (not kinky, a serious question) (7/30/2011 6:36:05 AM)

~grins~ Yeah that's the nickname we who work in the hospital have for our bloodtakers. No we don't use it in front of the patients. There have been times when I wondered if there were a vampire they were feeding because there were so many tubes of blood.

People really can be idiots can't they? Still it doesn't surprise me that they ask them considering the misconceptions people have about all kinds of medical stuff.

Yeah, it wasn't fun. The odd thing is that it happened overnight. No warning at all, the bastard. I'm going to get one of the surgeons at work to remove the remaining lipoma, no way am I going to take chances with it. Now I just have to find the time. [>:]
