I had an appointment with the dental hygienist yesterday and she was fab. She had been working about 5 minutes when the dentist stopped by and did a little victory dance for me. He said that he was so proud that I actually showed up and just gave me all kinds of praise for keeping my appointment. It was a little embarrassing, but it felt kind of good too.

I reached the point where I can have my clean and polish without major panic attacks, most of it is due to having a great dentist! You got every reason to feel proud, it seems it was a major break through for you. I still have to reward myself for each trip with something, usually I hold up buying something I really want until I've seen the dentist/hygienist so that hopefully at one point in time I will see it as a positive thing!

I am finding that he IS a great dentist. Very kind and aware of all the issues that some people have with going to the dentist. He even told me "I don't want you to wait to be in pain before you say something, if something is making you uncomfortable, or even just anxious, please speak up, you don't need to feel anything negative here, we have solutions for almost everything." And so far they have, any time I have begun to panic they have always stopped and helped me in any way that they can (the hygienist did my cleaning with the lights off because it made me more comfortable). It's been a great experience (well, as great as it can be) so far.

I'm so happy that you've found a dentist you can feel comfortable with! I have suffered from extreme dental phobia all my adult life. One time I found a dentist whose hygienist was a hypnotist & that worked very well for me. When I moved to Portland, I found a sedation dentist & that worked pretty well. I didn't like the first guy I went to in the office, but the 2nd one was great!!! And they allowed me to bring Spike the Amazing Wonder Dog to lie on my lap while they worked on me. After a few visits, I no longer needed Spike, and the office staff was very disappointed when I stopped bringing him. LOL I've moved & no longer have any dental coverage, so sadly, I'm not getting the dental work done that I need done, because I panic at even the thought of finding another dentist.

I don't have dental coverage either, but I have some serious issues with my teeth that are causing me pain. It's something that was needed at this point.

The thing is -- i think most dentists know people don't come to them because they don't like pain and such they experienced before. A lot of dentists nowadays numb you on their own dime -- or at least they don't charge you extra for it -- its in the price of the cleaning or whatnot. My dentist is like a spa lol they put parafin on your hands and feet, you can get a foot/hand massage, give you ear phones and let you watch movies etc etc . It just takes shopping around for the right dentist for you -- i think many would surprise most people nowadays. angel

I was amazed to find that the dentist's chair had a massager built in! I spend 9+ hours a day on my feet on concrete so that was actually heavenly!

Yep and as far as i can tell, it's either somehow in the price of whatever he is doing or free, and i have called other dentists pricing the procedures and his is actually comparable. The whole office is like walking into a spa lol. I think most dentists are working to dispell themselves as the evil doers of medical providers lol. Their main concern is trying to make sure their patients don't experience pain. angel

I prefer a dentist who's main concern is to have my teeth in the best shape possible, I don't like dentists and possibly never will, but I take a good dentist over a glammed up spa any day, all the trimmings and free massages are great - but if I want that I go to a spa, if I go to a dentist, I want a dentist who's top of the range - not at spa treatments but at dental treatments. Oh good grief, this dentist is fucking one of the best in the area. Some people just have to try to make everything bad lol. Good grief, are you seriously this silly? Bursts out laughing, yeah this guy has top of the line spa equipment but his dental equipment is below standard -- uh huh. Gee, i really hate to see the type of dentists that you have been too and continue to go to if you are seriously believing what you wrote -- is this what socialized health care is about? Dentists trying to blow smoke up someone ass by telling them they need to feel pain so they can say when the dentist has done something they aren't supposed too? This guy didn't get to be one of the best in the area by not giving a fuck about his patients, their fears and worries. He CARES about his patient's comfort WHILE doing his fucking job. Are you this pessimistic that you seriously trying to make this out to be some BAD dentist because he gives a fuck about his patients and their concerns? We may be different but if my dentist needed me to BE ABLE TO FEEL PAIN of him drilling too fucking deep, i would say well gee doc, maybe i will find a dentist who i don't need to be worried about him drilling too deep. I mean fuck, do surgeons keep you feeling pain to make sure they don't cut too deep. Hell no, so why the fuck would you be expected to feel pain at the dentist in a procedure like that. PRESSURE yes, pain fuck no. I guess we are different in that i do my research on the physicians and dentists BEFORE i go to them, you may wait until you get in the chair and make sure he keeps you able to feel pain and have a sparce cold room without giving a shit about your worries and concerns but i guess my trust comes from having talked to his patients, doing my due diligence on him prior to even SEEING his office and amenties he offers his patients and then having the last years of great service -- even NOT feeling pain on procedures -- imagine that. But i guess we do things differently -- so you go ahead and keep worrying about your dentist lol i will enjoy with no worries my next visit as well as enjoying the little amenities his office offers his clients. angel

If I want one of those, a manicure that is, I go to a nail salon, just like I go and have a haircut at the hairdressers, my teeth are more important to me than freebies, but to each their own, some people like specialists, others want freebies...

FR I've got to go and get my own clackers seen to soon - groan. However, I've evolved a neat trick: I have sexual fantasies while sitting in the chair. At one time, I sat in the chair tense and sweating; nowadays, I actually come close to dropping off to sleep.

It's okay, i know you have to try and make this personal derogatory comment somehow, but next time you really might want to know what a profession actually does before trying to be derogatory about it. But in this YES, i know my dentist. Christ, i am talking PERSONAL experience here. So well gee yeah, i do know this. Are you seriously this desperate to make a dentist who does little things to make his patients comfortable somehow bad? Please point out to me where i ever said my trust in him is based on his amenities? Please tell me lol where i commented that his certifications weren't what they were supposed to be, please tell me where i said his ability to do his job was flawed all because he has little things to make his clients comfortable? I got that based on her visit AS A WHOLE which included her procedure, her dentist is fab. But i guess you only want to make the massage chair a bad thing cause well gee the dentist can't possibly be doing their job IF they are concerned about the patient's comfort during their visit and procedure. grins, like i said, you continue going to a dentist who requires you to be able to feel pain so you can tell him when he has fucked up. So what you are saying is that UNLESS the dentist has this cold, hard prison like office surrounded by clinical environment, and doesn't have a care in the world for his client's comfort, concerns or fears, somehow that dentist must not be actually doing his job or be good at their job, must somehow be covering something up and people shouldn't trust him.. grins, you keep going to your specialists who tell you that you need to feel pain so they know when they fuck up... i will go to my dentist who is the best in the area, and have a nice relaxing trip to my dentist and not only getting great dental care but some added bonuses that make me feel great. On a serious note because i really do think your comments here are just desperation to make something negative, if your dentist is telling you that you need to feel pain so you can tell him when he has "drilled too far," or for any reason to tell him anything, you really need to find a new dentist. Here's a clue, most dentist who are good at their job -- won't need a patient to feel pain to tell him he has fucked up, most dentists are more diligent and don't fuck up. angel

My dentist has pictures on the ceiling of dolphins that become animated when the switch is flipped. He also plays soothing sounds, water, ocean, birds, etc, or, if you request it...Barney. Yep, my dentist is primarily for kids. I figure, they try harder to not cause pain, lol Drugs work too, but I gotta say, those dolphin on the ceiling are really captivating.

I am planning on bringing my MP3 player to my next appointment to blast Crash Test Dummies or Me First and the Gimmie-Gimmies into my eardrums so I can't hear the drills. They tell me that I will be totally unaware of what is going on, but to be perfectly honest I won't believe it until it happens.

Thank you so much. I am just once again amazed at how great the people here are. I posted this on two different websites, this one and one that's mostly moms trying to save money. I got 10 or so replies on the other site, but this one is 6 pages long and still going! I just really appreciate the support and replies I get here no matter what I ask.
